Today in history: May 30, 1937 - In the Memorial Day massacre of 1937, the Chicago Police Department shot and killed ten unarmed demonstrators and beat and injured many more at the Republic Steel plant in Chicago. The incident took place during the "Little Steel Strike" organized by the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). No police were ever prosecuted.

Move The gently caress Over, Bro FAQ 1) But women do this too?! Yes, true, sometimes women spread out, but here’s the thing: the social context is totally different. Women are trying to establish themselves in the social world and resist the pressure to be small and reduce themselves into compliance, men are just following the social order to impose themselves on others and be dominant; they are acting from a position of power, women are not. Also, “sometimes women spread out as a way to establish personal space. Even if you are on an empty bus or subway, men can be creepy and try to sit right next to you”

Omi-Polari posted:I once offended a very serious anarchist (covered with tattoos of AK-47s and anti-fascist symbols no less) for suggesting "it's because you have more in common with them than you might think." Clearly I'd prefer the anarchists to the fascists, but both fascists and anarchists see the established order as inauthentic and diseased, and themselves as romantic revolutionary movements. I think anarchism also often shares this romantic, heroic and organic vision of how society should be; like fascists do, but with a different conception of what that would look like. Fascists are about the will to power. Anarchists are about the propaganda of/by the deed. It's politics dressed up in provocation and aesthetic and symbolism. Marxists? Eh. The Crass logo was very carefully designed to remind you of fascism. It's pretty much a suncross/swastika crossed with a ouroboros with a bit of Union Jack mixed in. I remember reading something by Hobsbawm about how anarchism was at it's roots an anti-industrial and even traditionalist ideology. The early anarchists either peasants or craftsmen put out of a job by the industrial revolution and dreamed of society of scattered small towns free of the dark satanic mills of industry. Among modern anarchists the anti-industrial attitude is strongest among anarcho-primitivists who think any technological advances since, and including, the invention agriculture is oppression and groups of more than 100 are automatically oppressive. Of course from the mid 19th century to the late 20th anarchism was for the most part simply a libertarian form of communism with a heavy emphasis on worker control of industries but in recent years more anti-industrial schools of thought such as primitivism and post-left anarchism have been becoming increasingly prominent. Fascism on the other hand is both traditionalist, with a heavy emphasis on the mythic and mystical heroes and symbols of the past, and industrialist with a fetish for tall monuments, fast vehicles and various death machines. This obviously clashes a bit and doesn't make too much sense but that's mostly because fascism is a contradictory mess for and by madmen and morons. To make up for my inane ramblings have an anarchist song about how revolutions are bad, a lovely nazi song about how socialism is bad, and a anti-fascist song inspired by a much older anti-fascist song that was actually written by prisoners in a concentration camp in 1933. I can see this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but men spreading their legs all the hell everywhere on public transport is kind of a problem. The Tumblr takes it too far, but I commute about an hour each way every weekday, and very often dudes will plonk themselves down both sides of me, actually shoving my legs out of the way with their own. I get that it's not comfortable to sit with your legs tight, but it's not all guys that do this, and I'm guessing the ones that do don't actually have the gigantic balls that would require that distance. It's also not very comfortable or pleasant for me to have my legs pressed together the entire time just so you can take as much room as you want! This is central London, so to ask them to move would be so socially unacceptable as to make everyone on the carriage shrivel into a husk of embarrassment. And pressing your legs against a man's legs does not have quite the same effect as a man pressing his legs against yours...

Well, The Danish People's Party is at it again. This time they found out that one of about 700 new citizens is a person of interest to the Danish intelligence service PET. They would've liked to just print an add with his name, but that would be illegal, so they went for the second best option; printing an add with the names of all of those new citizens. The government and the other parties are handing out citizenships left and right: One person on this list is a danger to the safety of Denmark Now he gets to be a Dane... (A lot of talk about how there's a potential terrorist, how the Danish People's Party is the only party who want's it to be difficult to become a Danish citizen and so on.) Luckily, they've been reported to the police, and it might stick, since the name of the "potential terrorist" was classified information. As a Briton, the thing I'm most concerned about here is that the water in the English kettle appears to be brown, thus setting this cartoon in a dystopian future where austerity measures have gone so far that the national water supply isn't even kept clean any more. Is the point meant to be that in Britain, our society has conditioned us so far against "making a fuss" that even if our basic standard of living is eroded we will not do anything about it as a people except continue to complain in private, whereas in France the populace is much more socially and politically involved? Because if so, France actually seems to have it much better. edited for potential tablebreaking
