You could probably make the money back from letting a single "I Love 1995" style programme use the footage.

There's a really marvellously strange programme on BBC2 just now, the Time Travellers Guide to Tudor England. It's an interesting take on a historical documentary, less "Look at this king and his courtiers and their marvellous houses" and more "If you went back in time you'd be eating dung and living in darkness, so be thankful for what you've got, you ungrateful little pleb".

It's a refreshingly weird take on the subject.

I'd love to do a documentary. Are there even any small/tiny channels still producing any original content any more? Other than repeats it just seems to be home shopping, "proper" porn and faith based stuff.

I have $2 and an almost empty jar of Nutella. You can have the jar after I've scraped the bits of hardened Nutella off the side. They're the best thing. And I want the jar back after you've finished because they make good milk glasses.

Somebody needs to put HIGNFY out of its misery. The first five minutes tonight were just Hislop saying not funny things with his arms folded and looking around at the audience for applause. Merton has completely given up. Really, I don't know if the bloke is dealing with problems in his life at the moment, but he's just miserable. For a long time, even though you could tell his heart wasn't in it, he still made an effort to do his little gimmicks like miming the zany things he'd come up with or saying that someone in a photo had something growing out of them that was really a thing in the background but he's even stopped doing those now. He just sits there looking like he wants to be anywhere else. It just makes me sad to watch the show now :(

Has anybody been watching Watson and Oliver? It's a sketch show on BBC2 with a lot of familiar (and mostly female) comedy faces. I watched an episode the other night but apparently this is the second series and it's almost over. Maybe it was just a flat episode, but what I saw of it was really poo poo. I actually sat there at the start trying not to compare it to Smack the Pony, because that would be setting the bar unfairly high, I thought. But then they did a sketch that was a piss poor imitation of one of the most memorable sketches from Smack the Pony, so gently caress them. Their show is poo poo and everyone should watch Smack the Pony instead.

So I'm at a bit of an impasse now, I've seen almost all the telly I can think of, and I'm looking for more comedy. I've seen all the usual suspects apart from older stuff. I really dig my satires, I've seen Citizen Smith (which is probably bad or something but I dug it) and Spitting image and stuff like that, but didn't see Not the Nine O'clock news. Any recommendations?

The Day Today, Brass Eye and Time Trumpet are all good satires, but you may already have seen them.

As for older stuff, I'd recommend The Young Ones, The Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer, Bang Bang It's Reeves & Mortimer, and also The Comic Strip Presents. The latter does have some episodes which are satirical, like The Strike. Also I'd recommend Catterick, Nighty Night and Saxondale because they all seem quite overlooked.

My mate showed me an ancient sketch show called Bruiser starring Martin Freeman, Olivia Coleman, David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Garth Marenghi (or the guy who plays him) the other day. It seems to all be on YouTube, albeit in fragments, and I don't think I've ever seen that mentioned here, so maybe that will scratch your itch.

It's by no means brilliant, but I was kinda shocked to discover there was a show full of popular British comedy talent that I'd literally never heard of. It also seems to be the origin of the IT guy from series two of the (British) office, so it's worth it for that alone.

If I recall correctly Gervais was in fact a contributing writer on Bruiser.

Mitchell and Webb also went on to make That Mitchell and Webb Situation after Bruiser which is like a less poo poo version of That M&W Look with no laugh track.

Well, something I can appreciate about having like a million channels these days and them going 24 hours a day, there's usually repeats of something good. Watched the first two episodes of the Inbetweeners yesterday. Still brilliant. "Oh, I'm sorry. Piss off, please!"

Oh, Father Ted too. Had the two parter Escape From Victory/Kicking Bishop Brennan up the Arse on the other day.

Hell, even older stuff like the Young Ones gets shown quite often. Sick never fails to make me laugh myself silly. "Shut your mouth, Damage!"

Also on the subject of obscure and forgotten gems, Operation Good Guys was a fairly amusing mocumentary. It ran for three series although the second and especially the third moved away from the original premise somewhat. It's available on DVD which means all the clips of it on youtube are unfortunately region blocked.

On the topic of old-but-still-good things, I recently rewatched all of Porridge and I can't believe how well it has stood the test of time. I am someone who hates watching reruns of Only Fools And Horses and the like because its too dated, but Porridge still works really well. There is a lot of err... politically incorrect content which made me raise a couple eyebrows but nevertheless very enjoyable.

Does anyone know if the BBC have any plans to extend their 7 day catchup rule? I could understand it a few years ago when it first started but they seem to be sticking with it. It's great if you just missed something but god forbid you actually want to watch an entire season or something.

I noticed they have some form of archive now but it's just bits and bobs chosen pretty much at random. I can only dream about how awesome it'd be if they actually made an attempt at putting everything up. I'd mostly be interested in the radio content but TV would be awesome too, obviously.

Apparently there's no chance of it ever going further, due to other UK stations throwing a hissy fit in comparison to their comparitively barebones libraries and/or commercial issues. I hear that a much more extensive option is privately available only to BBC staff, which stretches back a whopping 3 years, as well as allowing any and all content (including aired films, American shows and maybe even the sports stuff).

Yeah read James Murdoch crying in 2008 about how the iPlayer crushed competition here- http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/apr/25/digitalmedia.television

And a quote from the BBC trust-

quote:

A BBC Trust spokeswoman said: "The BBC Trust subjected the BBC iPlayer to a rigorous public value test that included a market impact assessment carried out by Ofcom.

"The trust imposed a number of conditions on the iPlayer to take account of market impact issues, consultation responses from the industry, and responses from over 10,000 licence fee payers before final approval was given."

So they purposely made the iPlayer less good than it could have been in order to reduce its 'market impact'.
