Jam Buddies

Haven't been able to play recently, but I've found on my Sniper that just using Kaliyo, since I always have her fully geared for her level, we can kick tanks and handle it just fine. It's a little harder than with a dedicated tank person, but it's better than the DPS shadow who just queued tank to get in faster.

Then I have a 50 Commando/healer (I really liked the class), 50 Consular Sage/Healer on Jedi Covenant as well as a 35 IA/healer.

My problem has always been finding an active guild. I've probably joined at least half a dozen or more and they constantly seem to be falling apart or promises of activity run dry.

If I levelled a Sorcerer during the double XP weekends on JC, is the goon guild active enough that there's groups to do flashpoints and raids regularly?

That's No Goon has been raiding since launch and is still going strong. Since I got in the raid group a little over a year ago, the longest I can remember that we didn't run weekly raids was a stretch of about 3 weeks right before Makeb came out.

There's been people coming and going all the time, but right now we have more coming than going. Right now we're at a steady 8-man team with a couple irregulars/backups, but there are several folks leveling up and waiting in the wings. Assuming we don't have a sudden mass exodus, we might be able to start running 16-mans within the next month.

Cademimu, Empire. Tank is a 27 Assassin. Brief gear check, I see he has the full Eradicator's Suit and a shield, okay, we should be good.

We wipe about halfway through. This guy just loving melts by the time I CC the droid. Right before the first boss, we come within an inch of wiping again - me and the other DPS are saved by my Bleed Heals (:black101:)alone. Somehow, a bunch of mobs from earlier in the area aggro from 1000M away and wipe us out. Then it happens again. I figure it was a bug, so I get us to all regroup at the bottom of the first elevator to try to clear it out. Me and the tank make it first...and he proceeds to attack the set piece group of mobs fighting. Just me and him, no heals.

I call him on it. He vehemently denies he did this. All caps, he even /angry 'd at me. I realize now there was no bug, he was just accidentally running into piles of mobs after respawning.

We get our poo poo together and fight the first boss. I tell everyone to only attack the human enemy, since killing him kills the droid and the droid is a bitch. The tank melts and dies, and I get the human down to 25% by the time I realize the other DPS is happily working on the droid. We wipe.

We regroup and I inspect the tank on a hunch. He does indeed have the full Warsuit on. However, he has no mods whatsoever installed. Total armor? Less than 100. One of the group pulls random medium armor out of his rear end to try to help him, I just take over as tank to finish the boss. Things go okay until the healer gets himself caged (after I explained to the group how to avoid it) and we wipe, I GG and leave.

I think it was around 450 for the suit, and the mask's legacy cost was the same as it cost to buy it for one character.

You don't really need to understand orange gear though for most of the normal content. The quests shower a lot of decent greens/blues. You get lots of commendations that you can spend at the supply vendors (perhaps this part is poorly explained) where you can buy up to date gear. Instances drop fully loaded out Oranges you can wear as well.

Also there was a giant tutorial section on modifications and the quest that went with it sooo.

To be honest though I probably get like 4-5 good FPs in the normal leveling bands before I get 1 bad lemon. That lemon is usually because of someone trying to play tank when they obviously have no clue how.

Perfectly viable as a DPS class or a tank with some self heals and buffs.

CC aka controller duties are split up among the other classes. There are no buff or CC specialist classes. That being said, shadows/sins actually have a decent CC and can stealth which makes them very handy.

My advice? Roll one and see. You won't have any decent taunts or tank abilities until 16 or so, but there's no way to know if you'll like it without getting your boots on the ground and playing to 20.

I think the item mod stuff came a little early to really sink in effectively, and I don't think the planetary commendation vendors were explained any further than "Oh hey you can use these things to buy cool stuff". I didn't realize that those could be used for augments until I got about 80 commendations and the "You're about to hit the cap, go spend some" warning popped up.

At least for people who are newer to the game (like me), taking the time to properly upgrade and maintain orange gear doesn't always feel worth it. For me, the biggest thing is that I can't bring up the augment screen for an item while browsing a vendor, so I spend more time opening, closing, and re-opening menus than anything else. Plus having to correlate augment "level" ("Might Hilt 14", "Guardian Plating 10") versus my actual character level and what I have equipped in any one of the dozen or so slots that I might have if I'm completely decked out in oranges... A lot of times it's just flat-out easier to run with quest drops and auction house buys. I figure that by the time you're working on levelling alts that it'll be second-nature enough to be quick and easy, though.

The 'controller' class, as a whole, is dead in the MMO genre. The only game in recent memory that features one that isn't sub par is Neverwinter, and my judgement there was from about a week playing the game before coming back to SWTOR, so it may actually be sub par and I just don't have a good sense of reference.

Tanking in SWTOR is basically the opposite of DPSing. You collect the biggest guys first, and if you can, grab the small ones. If your DPS are competent (they won't be), they'll be killing Weak > Standard > Strong > Elite > Champion, because that removes the most DPS from the fight the fastest. And even if your DPS are incompetent, holding onto the Strongs and Elites should keep them alive long enough to extract their heads from their asses and come out ahead.

It's part of the dumbing down of MMORPGs. I couldn't believe how simple the class/gearing was in this game, since the last MMO I played was Everquest, where there were a billion stats to take into account when gearing up.

The thing with having billions of stats is that in the end you often still get a single best combination and everyone just follows that route. So why not cut the middleman ?

Now if you can actually make several different combos that work, then I'd say it's a clever and interesting system. Having never played Everquest, I can't tell how it was in that one.

I think it is because grouping has gone the way of dinosaurs and disco. Controllers and other 'support' classes are for team based play, and the EQ model MMO has been moving steadily toward solo play as late as the release of WoW in 2005. A few games are starting to make it easier to group by scaling character levels based on zones (Guild Wars 2), 'sidekicking' (Champions), and other QoL improvements, but as best I can tell, this is the exception, not the rule. Yet, anyway. The most recent MMOs are substantially different enough from the EQ-WoW model that we'll probably see this become the norm again, and when that happens, the Controller/Buffer might come back.

I'll probably get burned at the stake for this, but man it would be cool to see SWTOR get a New Game Experience patch that breaks it away from some of the worse aspects of the EQ-WoW paradigm. Of course it is a pipe dream, but sometimes those are the only things that keep me going.

Yeah, but there's still pretty much a BIS option always. Every Assassin Tank is going after the Force Wielder Hilt, Armoring. Little bit of room for options with Mods/Enhancements/Augments but they're still going to be aiming for Absorb/Shield/Defense. Is Alacrity even useful for healers now? I know they buffed it, but is it worth dropping Surge or Power for Alacrity? Everything I've read says "Nope."

It is. Crit has such poor returns that its worth it to have alacrity instead of crit for sorcs/sages at least.

edit: Also you have to balance endurance in there, especially as most of the sin's mitigation is chance based so you have some issues with large spike damage. The gear in 2.0 gives you such a fuckton of endurance that I'm not sure if its a big deal at all now though.

I do something similar, but on my part, I collect a full set of orange gear as soon as I can, and upgrade every four levels. I hop over to my sorc who has Cybertech, make seven (or eight if the offhand uses armouring) blue armourings of the right level, mail them to my current character, then take a trip to the planet's commendation vendor to buy one barrel/hilt, nine mods and seven enhancements of my level. Then I pop all my gear into my inventory with one of each modification underneath. Then I just slot each mod in one after another.

Stats themselves don't really matter when you're rolling in oranges, just buy the class modifications that match your level and whichever enhancements match your level and stick em in, there's no real need to do any comparison. It is a little different of course if you don't have a Cybertech though because then you might not have enough commendations to fill out your gear, but if you don't have a Cybertech and you are a subscriber my personal opinion is that you should go train your current character in Cybertech right now because levelling becomes a breeze, and if you don't have Cybertech because you are free-to-play you either do enough tedious grinding of heroics and stuff that you should have the commendations you need, or you probably don't have a full set of oranges anyway making it cheaper to kit them out.

Who doesn't wanna be Johnny Cat?

So I bought the Solus Secant mount but the button to add it to my account through Collections is missing and the only thing there is the "Open Cartel Market" button. Other mounts work fine as do limited time items like the Gold Scalene Armor and there's nothing indicating it would behave any differently. I have submitted two tickets about it (The second more clarified since they sent me an automated "Make sure it is in your collections. This is how you add things to collections." reponse) and got the same canned response twice in a row now.
