I really hope they come to Michigan again. Preferably in a much better venue than last time they were here on the Era Vulgaris tour. The Orbit Room in Grand Rapids is such a poo poo hole.

Smooth sailing

Smooth sailing is so funky, and that riff around the third of the track, I'd listen to that all day.
You can feel Them Crooked Vultures and Eagles of Death Metal had some influence on the writing of this album, especially for some funky grooves straight from EoDM and that's cool for me.

QOTSA is coming to Paris, France on June 19th, I'll sure as hell try to go see them if I manage to buy tickets. I've missed Tenacious loving D by a minute (ticket orders opened at 9am and were unavailable by 9:02), I hope it won't be the same for them.

We Do Not Sow.
On one hand I dig how Josh evolved as a singer, his falsetto felt a bit off on TCV but it really fits this album. I also like how expansive the album is, dark as poo poo with Keep Your Eyes Peeled and I Appear Missing (which reminds me of The Fun Machine..., one of my favorite songs) and quite groovy with If I Had A Tail & Smooth Sailing. Kalopsia is instantly amazing also and a new direction for them that I really appreciate.

But this one lacks serious rockers, as a long time fan I'm desperately looking forward to finally seeing them live this tour but not really for these songs. Maybe My God Is The Sun & Fairweather Friends when it peaks are satisfying in that regard but that's it to me.

That being said the NPR show already tells me this is probably the best his crew has ever sounded. I'd be loving amazed if they kept their setlist as long and gratifying as they did there for the rest of their coming shows.

Old Town Road to EGOT

7.3 out of 10 from Pitchfork

quote:

Queens haven’t fully abandoned brawn and ballast (combustible lead single “My God Is the Sun” is up to their usual paint-stripping standards), but those qualities are now being harnessed for greater emotional impact, particularly on the penultimate “I Appear Missing”. It's a power ballad that perfectly bridges the divide between Queens’ hard and soft extremes, pitting Homme’s crestfallen melody against a sleeping giant of a chorus that proves to be as raging as anything in the band’s repertoire; when Homme shifts to falsetto for the song’s calamitous closing minute, it’s less a show of cheekiness than vulnerability. Homme initially chose his band name to subvert the machismo inherent to hard rock and, more than any of their records before it, ...Like Clockwork feels like the ultimate realization of that mission. To invoke an old glam proverb, it kicks like a mule even when it dresses like a queen.

My major beef with this album is the track order. SFtD had an excellent mix with some great heavy stretches, a few breaks to catch your breath, and some semblance of a narrative. I think the problem with the last few QotSA albums is that they just sound like a mish-mash of songs with no coherency. I think "If I had a Tail" would have made a great opening track and "Fairweather Friends" for the closer. I also feel the past few albums, this included, are top heavy. a lot of the radio friendly stuff up front. Just my opinion.

I think the track order is spot on to be honest. If I Had A Tail would be a random song to have as an opener. KYEP is perfect.

Yeah, I agree- Keep Your Eyes Peeled only fits as either the first song or the last song, and Fairweather Friends as a closer would undercut a lot of the emotional impact of the album and doesn't give a strong sense of closure. I think the track order is pretty well balanced, Clockwork's one of their more thoughtfully constructed albums.

Although determined to hit the road (“It all starts next week”), Homme hints that another Queens album might arrive sooner than we think, referencing the dark before the dawn of Iggy Pop’s first two ‘Berlin period’ solo albums, written, recorded and released in swift succession within the same year. “Part of me thinks it would be great if this was the point-counterpoint that The Idiot and Lust For Life are, y’know? I love those records so much; they came out in a quick period of time. The Idiot is very dark and Lust For Life is sorta like ‘Tah-daaah!’ I would love to answer this album with a ‘Tah-dah!’ at some point.” Some point soon? “Yeah, absolutely,” he assures. “I think six years is far too long...”
I know he said the same about a follow up of alternate mixes for EV but since he's in full control now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
EDIT: Also:

quote:

Guest INTERROGATOR: Chris Goss (Masters of Reality)

Josh, could you give three reasons why The Skinny should be listing, recommending and not ignoring Masters of Reality's Glasgow 17 June Cathouse show?
Josh: You want three reasons why you have to go see it? I can do that easy: Darkness, Mystery and Loveliness. Those are my three reasons. Chris is not only one of my dearest friends in the world, but I’m a fan of his music, and they’re not mutually exclusive. I don’t like something just because I like someone. It’s a good feeling when you can love your friend and love what they do too. I highly recommend that you go there.

Also, there are lots of fans asking if there will be any last minute guest appearances in each other's sets at Download. We've done Monster in Your Parasol a zillion times, so how about I play on Sick, Sick, Sick and you play on Deep in the Hole?
Josh: OK.

This one feels a LOT less top-heavy than SFtD or Lullabies- on either of those albums, My God Is The Sun would have been track number one or two. Even Rated R started with a big, loud, catchy song before it moved to the slow burns. The track order for this one is really balanced well, in my opinion. The flow is almost more Desert Sessions-y, at least on my first impression.

Also god drat I can't stop listening to My God Is The Sun. One of my all-time favorite Queens songs for sure.

Edit: Am I crazy, or does Kalopsia REALLY have a Them Crooked Vultures vibe to it? The more I've been listening, the more this album sort of feels like a synthesis of all of Homme's projects.

I thought the second half of Keep Your Eyes Peeled and I Sat By the Ocean sounded really Vutlures-y. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in my eyes. But yeah, I'm loving having more QotSA, this album didn't disappoint.

In semi-related news, apparently Nick Oliveri is playing a couple shows in Alaska. It's in a different town than I live in, but will be the closest I've ever been to a member of Queens. I've never listened to any of his solo stuff or Mondo Generator, so I don't think I'm interested in making the drive to see him. Unless Josh has given Nick permission to use it, he didn't write that song and I haven't heard of him singing it (up to this point).

I believe all other songs that he sings on R and SFTD are his though. Mondo Generator is pretty good too, so check those albums out too if you haven't already. I suspect the most attachable (especially coming from SFTD) is "Cocaine Rodeo".

Man I loving love The Vampyre of Time and Memories. I was wondering why they chose it as the single but hearing it in context with the rest of the album makes absolute sense. Also I can't help but smile whenever I hear "I'm alive, hooray!"

And I know people are comparing this album to Lullabies to Paralyze but now I realize they really couldn't be more different. Lullabies was dark in a fun fairy tale kinda way and Like Clockwork is dark in a, well, I just died on an operating table and am re-evaluating my life way.

Here's hoping another album comes out soonish though. I'd rather get that than have to hunt down all of the B-sides that Queens scatters all over the drat globe like they did with Era Vulgaris. I'm still finding songs from that album's recording sessions I haven't heard before.

Somehow didn't realize a new Qotsa album was coming out until my drive home from work yesterday. Got it right away and have put in 4 or 5 listens so far - I think it's my second favorite "collection of songs" (Lullabies is my first) by them, but my favorite overall album. It's such a great change up from EV, two totally different feelings that still sound like Queens. And to be honest I prefer this darker and slower direction they've gone - they have an amazing back catalog of heavier faster stuff so it's not like I can't put on self-titled or whatever if I want to rock out.
