Just getting around between the stations would be awesome... now I have this weird vision of a large server MP game a la Star Citizen, but it's all set in the Metro and the paths collapse and change over time and people get paid to go explore new ways to get to places or open up new stations that were previously cut off...

Flipswitch posted:Edit: Actually that reminds me, what is everyones favourite thing about the Metro series? I really dig the supernatural thing that it has going, but I guess my favorite overarching thing is the whole banality of the metro. You have exceptions like the Reich and the Red Line, but Hansa and the independent stations basically pick up where society left off with exceptions like mutant attacks and so forth. You have the have's and have-not's and people just trying to make whatever living they can and survive. I've mentioned it before in this thread, but if you like the games, you should definitely pick up a copy of 2033 the book. It's very worthwhile.

I'm seeing that the ost is up on Youtube, is there a specific track for when 2033's theme kicks in at the airplane scene, as the nuke explodes or is it just part of another song? It almost sounds like this but not quite, it's more solemn.

fennesz posted:Sniping has it's uses, they're just incredibly few and far between. I actually managed to kill several of the larger monsters on the Marshes level with a single Valve round. Although 95% of the time whatever a Valve can do a Tihar will do better and with all of the other advantages a pneumatic weapon brings. I enjoyed the fact that on ranger (at least, I didn't notice it on normal) in the end sequence where you fight the tank they conveniently leave that stronger-than-valve anti-materiel rifle right where you need it. Also I think there is a valve laying around in the marshes somewhere that I put to use for a minute until I ran out of 7.62 and came back for my azbat. I carried a valve around all through my normal playthrough and used it occasionally (to great effect in the fight with Pavel), but overall it makes sense in a game that takes place mostly in a confined tunnel with limited visibility a sniper rifle isn't going to do you a lot of good the majority of the time.

I'm curious to see what we'll get in Survarium - the MMORPG from the makers of STALKER (Metro 2033 was developed in part by some members of the original STALKER team). It's probably the closest we'll come to an open world game set in the Metro-verse. I'm replaying the game right now and, OK, I bitched about the story not living up to the promise of the trailers. I still stand by that statement - there's unexploited potential - but holy poo poo is there a lot more when you take the time to explore side avenues. On my first playthrough of the railcar section, I didn't see the part where you run into a room full of ghosts who ONLY appear in your peripheral vision. It freaked me out the first time I saw it. I'm also reading the Clockwork Century series right now. The first book, Boneshaker, reminds me a LOT of Metro. The premise is that in the 1860s, a mining accident (of sorts) in Seattle opened a fissure in the earth and released a poisonous gas called The Blight. The gas turns people into zombies, called Rotters, but is also useful to manufacture various things, including an addictive drug. So a small community live underground in Seattle's catacombs and cellars, in sealed warrens, scavenging from topside, harvesting the gas, and selling it to the outside world. It's got monsters, gas masks, and an underground world full of cobbled together tech. It's steampunk Metro and it's a lot of fun.

The game's already out, but, uh, new trailer! It makes me want to play the game again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2djDE_kwH3Q quote:The Mobius was created by Alexander Bereznyak, aka Monakh, who was originally employed by 4A as a capture artist. Soon it turned out that his talent was needed in the production team and he took over the role as lead technical artist. But over a couple of months, he continued to work alone on this trailer, that is now made public.

Cheston posted:The game's already out, but, uh, new trailer! It makes me want to play the game again. This trailer is excellent, and it really ties in with how tight the Metro game series has been with regard to pacing and environment. The games are atmospheric fun to play because they are scripted to hell and back and the path is very linear. When you ask for a sandbox game, you are asking for player control and separation from the qualities of the game that define it. There's nothing in the Metro game that lends itself to free-explore mode. The game constrains the player for a purpose, a game where you become the master of the metro would be a waste of a setting. I read Metro 2033 the novel a while back, the confusing translation still in half-russian. Has there been any effort to translate the books so far? It's clear from the wiki that all the spin-off stuff is a total mystery, but I just want to read Metro 2034 already.

I could see a limited type of open-world gameplay benefiting the series, like "you need to get from this station to this station, you can either go above and risk the radiation and mutants, through these tunnels which are known to be populated by bandits or take the third mystery option which nobody's returned from but is the shortest route", but even then you'd be splitting up the work done on a single A-to-B path into three and you'd probably lose overall fidelity. I think the games are fine as they are - I mean, how many companies still offer tight, highly-focused singleplayer shooters these days?

I don't see it lending itself to open world at all. You have tunnels, which are restricting and you guide you down one path which will occasionally split. Topside, radiation and broken buildings will restrict you to a couple of dangerous routes. You'll still really be going in one direction no matter what. I agree with you on the splitting into choices not being as good. I would like it if you could pay for an escort for some of the more monster filled missions between stations though, just because i'm a sucker for working with well programmed npc characters.

I rented this game and I'm enjoying it so far, but for the past 3 chapters I've played there's been a constant loud buzzing sound following me through everything. It's gotten so irritating I'm considering stopping the game and returning it. I've tried reloading my save, going from the chapter select, everything I can think of. But as soon as the level starts all I hear is a loud buzzing that never goes away. Is this a glitch or is this just the sound effects in these levels (near the end of Revolution through Bandits)? Because if that's a design choice it's extremely annoying, like they want me to stop playing. edit: I just loaded up a walkthrough of the Regina chapter on youtube, no buzzing there but it was recorded on PC and I'm playing on 360. It must be a glitch on my game. No loving way I'm playing through the rest of the game with that noise following me everywhere, is there any way to fix it? Tried fiddling with the settings, disabled the various audio options, checked relevant drivers? There shouldn't be anything like that. Did it start in the middle of a session or when you resumed?
|
# ? Jun 8, 2013 03:46 |
|
Yeah, I'm playing it on 360 so there's no drivers. The only audio settings are Sound Effects Volume and Music Volume, so if I want to get rid of the buzzing I also won't be able to hear enemies or my own weapons. It started about halfway through a the Revolution chapter, and will start as soon as I begin any chapter after that and be with me through the whole chapter. I'm returning it today, so I guess it doesn't really matter anyway.

I Redboxed this and used a free 400 MS points token for Ranger mode. I want to like Ranger Hardcore more than I do because it's really immersive and mostly awesome, but the lack of any tutorials or UI made me waste a bunch of time because I didn't know how to do stuff. I didn't even know the Universal Charger existed until like 6 hours in. Now I'm at the point (near the end?) where I'm in a courtyard and getting shot at by Pavel's snipers who are instantly destroying all my cover. It's one of those levels which would probably take me a few minutes on PC/mouse/keyboard, but with this controller I just know I'm going to be dying over and over for an hour. Any advice for this part?

If it helps, you can stealth past a lot of the enemies and use throwing knives on the ones near stashes / corpses. It gets you a bit of ammo, and there are at least a few guns lying around that can fire Military-Grade rounds.

You don't have to shoot all those things in the swamp, even the ones who attack you give up if you just run away for a few seconds. Only during the holdout event do you need to actually kill them. The big hydralisk lookalikes i didn't even bother with, i just let them follow me around while i looted. You save a lot of ammo by increasing your contempt for and disregarding the lowly mutants.

Well the problem is that I am in the (I guess) ending of the catacombs and I can't sneak past these mutants. If I make one mistake I get gang rushed with no way to defend myself. OH BOY.

The catacombs suck. Just speed through it as fast as you can because it's the worst part of the game. I was in the same position and it took me basically just ignoring any side paths and getting to the end to beat it.

You can kill the stupid charging boss with the pillars without expending any ammo at least, just lead it through the pillars and it should take enough damage to finish phase one without any shots fired and enough to die in a few throwing knives in the second phase. Sure was fun to find that out AFTER I fired my entire ammo supply into its dumb loving face.

I grew fond of it on my ranger playthrough after not being able to find a loving Saiga. Does the Abzats just replace the Saiga on ranger? Also it's kind of funny there's not like, any weight restrictions on your guns. I was hauling around a drum mag RPK with that Abzats. That poo poo probably weighs more than Artyom.

So how do I get my hands on a Azbat exactly? I haven't seen one offered at any vendors or on any opponent wielding that belt-fed buckshot spewing monstrosity. I am also an Ashot fan, I never touched a revolver again thanks to the sheer stopping power that thing had against everything but the toughest mutants in the metro.

I never found a niche for the ashot. My loadout was Slot 1: Silent weapon (suppressed revolver -> tihar) Slot 2: Automatic weapon (bastard -> kalash -> kalash 2012) Slot 3: Shotgun (duplet -> shambler -> saiga) The ashot wasn't quiet enough for stealth kills, couldn't kill people fast enough to replace the kalash, and wouldn't help if swarmed by mutants. What did other people find its use was?
