I installed SonicOS 5.9 on the NSA 2400 today and was pleasantly surprised. SonicWALL implemented CAPWAP! and it works! They also added a decent CLI in the new release.

Just on the Cisco kit, I designed and implemented about 15 wireless networks in hospitals using the 1140 APs and a WLC to tie it all together. Used reasonably light WAN links to have only the APs at the sites and a single WLC back at HQ. There is some cool stuff the 1140s can do where if the WAN link fails they can continue to auth in a reduced fashion, but access doesn't stop. Of course most of the critical apps operate through these WAN links too, so all hell will break loose and probably the wifi network is the least of their worries. When I used the WLC I have to say it was kinda clunky, it was cool and all and did the funky stuff like monitor the networks and cover a dead AP by jacking up signal on the surrounding ones, but the firmware and software was buggy as poo poo and the Cisco TAC pretty regularly just said 'oh yeah, no that's hosed. Here put on this pre-release stuff and it should be better.. kinda'. The final network was pretty kickass though, to the extent they could throw away their phone system and go to the Cisco wireless phones (7921). I think they wanted to end up with a kiosk system too, once they'd implemented some QoS, so the residents could use the network and if old Joe wanted to start torrenting horse-porn, it wouldn't slow down the front desk using the scheduling app. I don't know what ended up happening (I moved on), but yeah, it was a cool job and the Cisco kit itself was of the usual high standards. But yeah, if you're thinking of going down this route be sure you ask the Cisco rep about that WLC software and if it still sucks.

Wanted to chime in and say that thanks to this thread we replaced our patchwork lovely wifi with a 3-pack of the UniFi APs and had everything configured and deployed in about 10 minutes. It's nice to be able to see how many devices are actually connected on each AP, as I had no idea of the actual usage on our old shitboxes. Although the warning to keep it at least 20 centimeters away from a person made me a little nervous while I had the first one at my desk

Anyone have experience with Meru wireless? We're considering switching to either Meraki or Meru this summer. I currently have 5 MR16s from Meraki to evaluate for a month, and they're decent, but I havent had a chance to play with Meru gear yet.

Jumping on the Unifi bandwagon here. I had a couple standard APs at a branch location for a few months a year ago, and they worked very well. When that location closed, I brought them back to our corporate office. I replaced a pair of Apple TimeCapsules that were used as wireless APs (with one bridged to the other). Now I have 4 unifi APs, each broadcasting our 3 SSIDs. We have a Corp, Guest and one for a bunch of training laptops. I've seen over 120 devices active at a time, and we've never had a problem. I had wanted to use their built in guest network feature for a captive portal, but I ended up just running it all through our router and handling the VLANs there. I've had probably 50 devices connected to a single AP before and haven't seen any problems. I do wish that I could block devices from connecting to a particular wireless lan, but not the whole system. The V3 stuff with no drop roaming looks pretty cool too. I don't think people have any problems with that, but it will make me happy to see it work a bit more smoothly. For less than $400 in hardware, we are very pleased with it.

I think I'm one of the only people that has had bad luck with the UniFi devices. After some period of time, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, every Android device in the building is suddenly no longer able to connect to the AP. They'll get caught in a loop where they constantly disconnect and reconnect after trying to obtain a DHCP lease. Sometimes iOS devices act the same way, and we've been only seen a Windows device suffer the same problem once. RMA'd the unit, the replacement does the same thing. Tried the 3.1.1 beta firmware, no luck. Their support guys have no idea what's going on, and we can't reproduce the problem on demand. What are the sane alternatives? We only need one AP, as long as it can cover the same range as the UniFi LR. We don't need anything remotely fancy, just WPA2 and the ability to assign a tagged VLAN to an SSID. Hoping I could get a little SonicWall help here. I've got a client with a SonicWall and then a SonicPoint attached to it. They have a corporate SSID, works fine. Then they have a guest SSID. I can connect, and I can open web pages (and ping) with the IP, but not the URL. So DNS, right? Except it's got the same DNS settings as the corporate does. And they claim it worked up until recently. I've been all through the sonicwall config, didn't see anything that jumped out at me, and no one would have been in there changing anything except me anyway. So WTF?

I assume you have the Sonicwall serving DHCP on this guest SSID... I would have them connect a computer to the guest SSID and run a ipconfig /all to make sure the client is getting a good IP/DNS. If they are then my next step would be touse the Packet Monitor function on the Sonicwall. Set it up to grab traffic on the SonicPoint interface. If they try to load a webpage, you should see a DNS request packet come in (UDP, port 53) and be consumed/forwarded, not dropped.

We have 7 different sites with 2-3 UAP LRs each and 2 SSIDs (one tagged, another one not tagged). We have a ton of employee android and iOS devices connecting to our guest network and some android tablets connecting to our staff SSID, never had a issue with any of them. Using Windows DHCP servers at each site. Running UniFi 2.3.8. The only issue we did have where some legacy Symbol devices that where speaking an older version of the WPA/TKIP protocol that the UniFi APs did not understand, which Ubiquiti fixed in a firmware update. One thing I have found, and this has held true with most wireless access points I have used; is to not use the "weird" security settings. For example, use only WPA-TKIP, or WPA2-AES. Any other combinations or the "both" mode available on many APs usually causes some devices to have issues connecting. Also, for the 2.4Ghz band stick with 20mhz channels (the HT20 setting in UniFi). In the 3.x software they have a "zero hand off" feature. It requires all APs to be on the same channel. It allows devices to move between APs with minimal to no interruption. All APs in the zero hand-off group appear as single AP to clients. The UniFi controller software is still only used for configuration, statistics, and for running the guest client portal (if used). Even the new zero-hand off feature doesn't require the controller to be running, as its handled entirely by the APs themselves.

Does anyone have some knowledge they can share on putting up point-to-point links in the 3km range? I'm looking to link my house to a friend's house in order to get reliable broadband to my rural location. I've been researching a bit and it seems like a 5Ghz MiMo link is pretty state of the art for this sort of connection right now, but is it overboard? The model I'm currently set on is a Ligowave set: http://www.ligowave.com/ligoptp-5-23-pro, which is coming in around $1200 for the set. I assume most other vendors will be in that range for the equivalent gear. Is it worth considering lower frequency unlicensed spectrums, like 2.4Ghz? I figure what I save by going that route -- maybe $400 -- I will give back in aggravation due to interference issues. I'd love to hear recommendations or caveats from anyone who has put up a PTP connection for whatever application. Even some good vendors would be appreciated. Thanks! edit:url typo

You want a pair of Ubiquiti airGrids (non-MIMO, up to 100Mbps actual throughput) or Nanobridges (2x2 MIMO, up to 150Mbps actual throughput). Get them here or here for about $60-80 per side. No need to pay $1200 for a 5GHz PTP link. 5GHz should be fine for that length link. Make sure you have good line-of-sight, including the first Fresnel zone and you'll be golden. If you don't have a clear Fresnel zone, you may actually benefit from lower frequencies, since those penetrate structures (including wood) better. There are 2.4GHz versions of both those models too. As far as the power output goes, those models are advertised for 20-30km so that shouldn't be a problem with your 3km distance. The clear LOS is quite important for a good connection. If the trees aren't ridiculously tall, maybe you can put up a taller pole on each end?

I have a friend running a pair of nanostations 5GHz with the power cranked up all the way, through two apartment buildings, walls, cars, and bushes, at ground level. It connects between -80 and -90dBm which is terrible but it connects and operates well (~10Mbps or so) given the conditions.

I'm considering the higher pole if need be, since we can both add to our TV antennae. I'm going to climb up and assess the line a bit better tomorrow when it isn't raining, but I'm thinking I'll start with the 5G link and hope for the best, and then move to potential tower mods after that. I've got a site survey booked for next week to assess the feasibility of a tower up to 80' to get LOS to the ISP. Basically they have a van that can measure the signal with a pole up to that height and give me a yea or nay on the spot. The price they're ballparking for a full 80' is about $5k, scaling down from there with the actual height -- does that seem reasonable? I know I should shop this around, but the part of me that has been using LTE internet service capped at 15GB/month for a long time just wants to get this done and over with.
