CottonWolf posted:Add me to the pile who thought the new Versus XIII/XV trailer looked incredible. I do get the feeling it's inevitably going to turn into Romeo and Juliet ~magical edition~, what with Noctis and Stellar. But, surprisingly, I'm completely okay with this. It turns out I've missed the ridiculous melodrama in my Final Fantasy games. I've missed it a bit too - I just hope it's less embarrassing than the story we got dished up in XIII/XIII-2. I don't mind silliness, just no saccharine pop songs over the top is all I ask. I didn't think the trailer looked incredible though. It looked solid - I'm still not sold on Square pulling off the gameplay to the extent it looks like they're going for. I was kinda ambivalent, but am going to try to be positive in terms of looking out for future media etc. It just felt more like a spin-off than a main series title, I guess? (Which makes sense considering it's basically Versus XIII). And I know I'll still buy it at some point, so I guess it's just whether it's at full price or bargain bin. If Square doesn't gently caress it up I'll love them.

Jeez, it's hard to think of the last time I was excited for a Final Fantasy release. Has it been more than a decade now? Just please don't gently caress this up Square. Last thing we need is EVERY game to be on iOS now.

So pumped for both XV and KH3. I'm guessing that if there are new FF characters Lightning will almost definitely be one of those included in KH 3.

Zombies' Downfall posted:Does Final Fantasy 12 count because Matsuno and Alexander O Smith clearly have a hard-on for Shakespeare (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Vagrant Story) or what? Because hey that honestly doesn't change a thing for me 12 was the last new game I really enjoyed with "Final Fantasy" on the box All I want is the announcement that Matsuno has obtained complete ownership of the Ogre Battle and Ivalice IPs, followed by the announcement of a new Tactics Ogre (same gameplay, HD sprites) and a FFT(not FFT) prequel that takes place during Ajora's period or in the time that immediately follows Alazlam releasing the truth about the War of the Lions. Both of which are as likely as Suikoden 6 being announced.

Would Matsuno even be able to create a game like that without throwing a fit and leaving halfway through?

From the gameplay trailer I just saw, it looks like the characters managed to knock that huge sword out of an iron golem's hand and then two of them proceed to awkwardly use the sword to kill the golem. This is going to be so much fun if it ever actually gets released.

Yeah, and also there's a part where Noctis is fighting a soldier near a car and bashes his head into the window. Also I love that there are numbers coming off the guys when you hit them, it really makes it feel more like a Final Fantasy IMO. Also the part where it's the same scene as in the trailer where Leviathan is attacking the city, but Noctis is in the water is really cool. PTizzle posted:I've missed it a bit too - I just hope it's less embarrassing than the story we got dished up in XIII/XIII-2. I don't mind silliness, just no saccharine pop songs over the top is all I ask. Pop songs are just part of Final Fantasy now, it seems. Even FF12 had one. As far as saccharine goes, though, nothing about this game up to this point makes me think "saccharine" at all, although it may also be bad in...other ways. No way to tell just yet. quote:I didn't think the trailer looked incredible though. I never saw versus as a spin-off. The way it seems like it worked back when the Fabula Nova Chrystalis project was first unveiled was that Tetsuya Nomura and the Kingdom Hearts team was basically just told "Make Final Fantasy 13 the way you would make Final Fantasy 13". Because of this, it really wasn't developed in the way a "spin off" would be, like FF13-2 or FF10-2, where tons of assets and stuff are re-used and the ambitions are quite smaller than they were previously. I think this is ultimately why they changed it to 15. As far as the gameplay goes, I loved KH1 and KH2, and if this is the third game by those dudes I'm sure I'll like it. The stuff with Noctis warping everywhere and just going wild on dudes seems a lot like what they were going for in KH2, where Sora would sometimes just go loving crazy sometimes. quote:And I know I'll still buy it at some point, so I guess it's just whether it's at full price or bargain bin. If Square doesn't gently caress it up I'll love them. Yes! This is pretty much Square-Enix in Japan's last chance to make something truly special before just about everyone writes them off. I mean, FF13-2 was good, I think, but it wasn't really that special. Mischitary fucked around with this message at 23:34 on Jun 11, 2013 |

Azure_Horizon posted:Would Matsuno even be able to create a game like that without throwing a fit and leaving halfway through? I don't think it was directing alone that made him leave, if he'd actually been allowed to just direct. It sounds like there was ridiculous levels of corporate meddling, like making him change the story to add a "main character" that would appeal to Japanese teens, and generally making him change and redo things when they didn't think it would market well. That's why the game took forever to make and gave him a breakdown. It certainly meshes with what we've all heard for all their other projects in the last decade or so. I think if he was just allowed to make the game he wanted, he'd be fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBilT83Uq4A This is the gameplay everyone is talking about right? Looks really cool, but I still have no idea how the combat system works. It almost looks like an ATB meter in the lower left corner, but it doesn't seem to move. Is magic in the game? I didn't see it being cast. Probably just missed it though, as combat moves pretty fast.

So far I'm seeing that there's a parry mechanic, there's weapon-switching, the dodge doesn't grant invincibility frames, and there's a warp. That's kinda cool. There's a fair bit of potential in this. The combat makes me think of a combination of Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry, strangely. Is anyone else getting that vibe? e: Also climbing on enemies hey that's kinda neat. We saw him doing that against a boss-like thing in the other trailer too. Japanese pop fiction loves having "meaningful" and ironic names due to the writing system meaning that all names have meanings that can be directly read due to kanji.

I don't understand why some people are complaining that it "doesn't look like a Final Fantasy game" and dismissing it outright before it has even so much as been completed. A lot of the traditional FF "feel" comes from the technical limitations of the time (ie turn-based battle, an overworld, tiny characters). While it does have a certain nostalgia value to it (hell, I love classic RPGs and think they're awesome), that gaming style is a bit antiquated. The FF games have been evolving from FF II. FFVII is incredibly different from FFIII, for example. It's like people complaining that they don't like new cars or smart phones or something. The old "Final Fantasy" games aren't going anywhere. They'll always be there, and we may even get reboots every once in a while. I like that they are trying to move the series forward and no, I don't think they're catering to the "God of War"/"Assasin's Creed" crowd (like one person on Kotaku suggested).
