I will confess,
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.

I've been following this comic for a little bit now and I think it's a fun and light romp but I can't help but be put off by the Noisemaster's "yo, yo, homey that's wack!" sorta faux-urban speak. It kind of rings of cultural appropriation used only for humor. I'm not decrying racism or anything of the like, but seeing ebonics played for laughs takes me right back to the same issue I had with Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2. It feels like a cheap way to get a laugh.

I don't read it as ebonic culturally appropriated from African-American people. I read it as DJbonic culturally appropriated from musicians trying too hard to be cool.

Boss, if they make us find seven lost crystals, I'm quitting.

Oh for God's sake. Noisemaster is talking in generic hip-hop or club scene slang. Those are not ebonics. At all. How is that any more offensive than if his name was Metalmaster and he talked in DUDE THIS IS SO BRUTAL CHECK THIS OUT IT'S GONNA MELT YOUR FACE OOOOOOOFF metal-head speak? Or even the way Saturday talks in a deep south accent and slang? Hint: it's not.

V: She said on Twitter she writes Noisemaster specifically to imitate the Beastie Boys. Also hnnnggg yes linguistics :fap:

Meow.
AAVE (or "ebonics") has a very specific phonological and grammatical structure. This can be settled using linguistic analysis

Here is some sample data of how Noisemaster speaks

(A). "Check it: my boy and me? Mad schemin' up in here! We got a plan so ill, it'll put you in a hospoital!"

(B). "Say what?! You know splash is wack, homie!"

(C). "Yooooo, ice cold! I'm tellin' you, man, it's all good!"

It's very similar to the grammar and morphology of AAVE (as codified by Fickett in 1972) but there are differences. Going in order of appearance. "It'll" in (A) is a contraction that wouldn't be found in AAVE according to Fickett. Since it contracts "it" and "will;" and "will" as a tense marker isn't found in AAVE. (Instead, the clitic "a-" is used. "I'm a-go over there." for the immediate future, and "gonna" is used for the indefinite future. "I'm a-gonna go over there" is for the post-indefinite or distant future. "Not now, but in a moment" would be used to make that distinction in Standard American English.)

Another difference is in the present tense, in (B) and (C). The present tense in AAVE is "[Subject] be [verb]in' [object]." Furthermore, the copula ("to be" words, to be distinguished from homphones used as part of tense marking) is often dropped in the present tense. So the present tense phrases in (B) and (C) would be "You be knowin' Splash is wack, homie!" and "I be tellin' you, man, it all good!" respectively.

Now, while this does mean that what Noisemaster is speaking isn't AAVE, it doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't intended to sound that way. A lot of "beastie boy" speak is often the product of white people trying to imitate AAVE. It could be that Gigi was intending it to be AAVE but simply didn't do research and ended up with "beastie-boy" speak by accident.

(edit: just to be clear, that last paragraph is just an attempt to sound impartial. I wouldn't have written a loving linguistics essay proving that he isn't speaking AAVE if I was still going to try and say that ggdg is being racist, like, really)

For gently caress's...it's stupidly evident she was going for Beastie Boys rather than racism. Although it resulted in a goddamn linguistics analysis of ebonics which I never actually thought existed so thank you for that. But shut up anyway.

It's been said time and again but these colors are so pretty. It proves there's no such thing as a bad color combination if you can work the pallete.

I think it would be pretty neat if the Knight is obligated to do this whole song and dance, just like how Cucumber is pretty much following through on a plot he really doesn't want to maybe the knight is forced to do the whole end the world shtick every time someone collects the orbs.

Jeez, my first thought upon Noisemaster's reveal was "wow, already this guy is a lot more competent than Splashmaster was", and so far he hasn't given any evidence to the contrary either. Nightmare Knight is just being a jerk to him for no good reason. Why does he have to be mean like that? It's almost like he's the villain of this webcomic or something
