Been playing Ace Patrol a bunch. Its a turn-based tactical WWI dogfighting game. Sid Meier was involved somehow. The gameplay is really fun despite the fact that I'm still really bad at it. At your base you choose between 3 missions and then pick 1-2 of your 4 pilots to go on it (you can use all 4 on the last mission of the season). Missions include, escorting a spy plane/bomber, shooting down an enemy bomber/zeppelin, destroying/protecting a convoy, or just shooting down all the enemy planes. Based on how many dudes they shoot down your guys get promoted and can learn new sets of maneuvers that allow them to change direction quickly, slide over a tile while facing the same direction, climb while banking, etc. Every now and then your scientists are so inspired by your bravery and courage that they give you some new tech that you can use to upgrade one of your pilot's planes. If your pilot takes enough damage during a mission they have to sit out for a couple while their plane repairs. If they crash in enemy territory you don't get them back till the end of the season (every 6 missions). Crashing in your territory knocks them out for 5 missions. You can pay to get your pilots back early () if you want to. Unfortunately, since you only have 4 pilots, its easy to find them all out of commission on the harder difficulties, forcing you to skip missions and weakening your position in the war. As the pockettactics review mentions the IAP system is pretty bad. I recommend playing conservatively on the lower difficulties so you aren't in a position of having to pay money or skip missions very often. The first 6 missions of the British campaign are free which will give you a brief feel for the game and not much else. You can purchase the rest of the British missions (an additional 18) for a buck as well as the French and some other country. I've just bought the British campaign and have already gotten several hours out of it. The randomization of the missions gives the campaigns a lot of replayability so you can get a lot of playtime out of a dollar. clams fucked around with this message at 03:22 on Jun 18, 2013 |

Dewgy posted:Weren't there goons in here saying the IAP isn't bad, just misleading? Or was that something else. Yeah. The Pocket Tactics post actually says the same thing, coincidentally. It's basically a $10 game that you can spend another $3 to get some cheats for. http://pockettactics.com/2013/05/09/flight-school-ace-patrols-iaps-explained/

Ace patrol is solid, and seconded. The IAP sounds awful, actually isn't. The only game-changing issue is reduced recovery time for shot-down pilots - and that's only an issue on harder difficulties, and only the issue you choose to make it be - picking the right missions makes it a lot harder to lose pilots. Could wish for more meaningful campaigns, or a deeper understanding (on my part) of fighter tactics, and it really does slow down a bit when there are too many planes out, particularly on their side... but still, good fun.

Yeah, I think if the IAP for getting pilots out of hospital/POW camp weren't there, you wouldn't even notice. It's a totally natural consequence for losing them during missions and the game doesn't feel balanced in a way meant to make you spend $ on poo poo.

Right. I got the impression that the game was structured such that you would be in spots where you had to pay or skip missions a lot more often than if the game was designed without a pay-to-get-your-guy-back option. Glad to hear its not that bad.

Glad to hear its not that bad. Also, my understanding of those "improvement" IAPs is that they're one time purchases. There's actually a quote from Sid Meier somewhere on the Firaxis forums about that. Basically, you're permanently changing the amount of time that your pilots are down, and each time you buy one you get to recover your pilots who are currently injured or captured as a one-time bonus. They aren't meant to be consumable things you keep buying every time you want to get some pilots back. I don't even know if they can be purchased multiple times.

What is the best combo to make in Scurvy Scallywags? I'm finding completing a long L is the best way to go. It gives 16 swords and a sword doubler piece. The only problem is you have to always make the corner sword match last, which makes it difficult. * * * * * Any other combos I can make to maximize profit?

If anyone's still waiting for a status update on Merchant to the Stars, we've finalized the feature set of the first patch and will be submitting it probably within the next few days. All the timers have been vastly reduced, there's an acceleration mechanic if they still take too long, a couple of major bugs have been fixed, and it supports iOS 5 now. I'll post the detailed release notes once it's fully out.

Something I just noticed dicking around with it: if you rotate to landscape mode it zooms out a bit and, well, gives you a landscape view of what the gently caress you're looking at. Makes the game look 100x better imho, especially on a tablet. edit haveblue posted:If anyone's still waiting for a status update on Merchant to the Stars, we've finalized the feature set of the first patch and will be submitting it probably within the next few days. For those playing Scurvy Scallywags, does the game get tougher? Because I'm on my third set of islands I think (the snowmen one), and pretty much ever since I unlocked the "convert the most popular item to gold" and "convert all gold to swords" skills, together they've basically trivialised every level. Clear out lesser-numbered items in the first couple of moves, hit both skills and hey presto, ~140 power. Combined with the pistol and I basically haven't come across a single enemy that tested me. I'm level 22 now.

In Scurvy Scallywags those two skills usually let me more or less win the combat as well, but the cooldowns are so long that I usually just save the combo for the boss level.

Is there anyone playing Knights & Dragons? It's a freemium I use as a time waster, just building armor sets and all that while I slowly level up. It has guilds so I was just wondering if there's some kind of goon guild I should look to joining. My in-game friend code is XBC - ZQG - XNC and my display name is Clocks in case anyone wants to add me.
