I met my first nuke in person today. He talked in excruciating detail about everything but what I wanted to know. He also mentioned that he was in the Navy about 5 times. He didn't appear to be a brony or an anime lover so I feel let down that I didn't get the whole nuke experience.

Bronies and animes tend to be linguists. Nukes are just spergs of all varieties.

So I'm just about finishing up prototype in Ballston Spa and I just go orders to the Ford. I guess its still in Newport News being built now. Anyone have any idea what to expect going to a ship that's still in construction?

I'm trying to figure out what I'm even going to be doing when I get there. Just qualifying and training briefs? Also everyone is telling me that Newport News pretty much sucks which I assume is true. Did anybody spend some time there and could tell me about it?

If you're going newcon as a nub, you will spend a ton of time cleaning and doing bitchwork. You will probably also get farmed out to a similar carrier for an underway or two to get basic quals, and also be their bitch.

Awesome.. kind of figured that's what it would be like. Guess I'll be spending the next 3 years or so cleaning in Newport news then.

Yeah, we're still building it. Won't be delivered to 2016. I've lived in the Hampton Roads area since 2005. What exactly do you want to know about the area other than, Hampton blows and the HRBT (Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel) sucks for commutes?

I dunno is there anything fun to do around there? I'm from Richmond, VA so I already kind of knew the area sucked but I've never actually been there. What does delivered mean exactly vice when it launches? There is like a three year gap in between the two so I'm just kinda curious what we'll be doing in between for those three years.

Busch Gardens? Water Country USA? DC is three hours away. There are concerts, museums, etc. down here. Depends on what you like to do, I guess? Can always hang out with grover and some of us other Hampton Roads goons too.

Delivered is when we formally give the "keys" to the Navy to the ship.

There's really not a single redeeming quality about newport news. Uptown towards Yorktown/williamsburg is pretty cool, suffolk owns in a sit out back and get drunk around a bonfire kind of way. There are a few private beach areas that you can do the bonfire/booze thing at as well.

This has been a pretty interesting thread to read as somebody going through the article 108 process. We've got a fair amount of navy guys that have to go the same school to get the qual and it's always a ball sitting around shooting the poo poo with them and hearing stories.

newport news: loving sucks. i get bored typing up all of the reasons so ill just say that pretend that youre walking down the street and about 50% of the people you see are either military or dependent. everyone else just glares at you. welcome to norfolk. bums suddenly ask you for money.

Newport news was pretty nasty and crime-ridden. command policy was females had to have e-5 or above escort to leave the ship after dark, no one walks off of the shipyard alone after dark, and my shift had mandatory musters to walk to the parking lot together due to stabbings/muggings targeting sailors. my personal experience with that was nearly getting robbed by 4 dudes at a gas station at midnight right off the yard. NN is not a good place.

What rate are you? I am also heading for the Ford, but I have been in the yards for 4 years doing this poo poo. Some minor poo poo is going to happen and there will be kneejerk reactions and make everyone do extra training and work longer hours. I heard they might be going to shift work at the end of the year.

If you are not married or getting BAH, I am sure they will put you up in the barracks they maintain in Downtown Newport News or at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Either option blows.

There is stuff to do around here. Depends on what you like.

EM3 just finishing up prototype right now. I'm single so I assumed there wouldn't be any BAH going around unless I STAR which I don't plan on doing. Whats shift work like? The same at prototype shift work or do they have locked shifts?

They have phases again at the Ford? Figured after two years in the navy they wouldn't start doing that again. Or do the different phases mean something else there? Also your saying that we don't even start quals right away? I guess it would be cool go to PCU school whenever I get there but I head that electricians don't go. I'm also the fresh in prototype kinda guy, should be out but MARF being MARF and all. Grad date was July 12 so hopefully this week I can just go to board and go on leave if they don't end up taking it away.

By phase he means when people show up at PCU. Initial manning is done in phases with phase 3 showing up in September timeframe. Phase 2 showed up in March. This has nothing to do with liberty.

Whatever your field is, you can take whatever the loans would cost you(plus interest) and plus the salary from the Navy and still come out ahead by getting a job in your field. Not to mention you won't be incredibly miserable for several years to start with. However if you're super-duper-let-me-join-the-military, there is a cake job that will fulfill "pay my debts" as well as "pay me while I'm in college" and ends up in a "I'm in the navy but been to sea" job: http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php?topic=3730.0

If you're facing massive student loan debt with no reasonable prospect to pay it off, you're either at the wrong school or in the wrong major. There is a difference between a career and a hobby; don't confuse them.

If you really want to go Navy, remember that Navy hires a shitload of civilians and contractors, too. Last numbers I saw, the Navy workforce was actually about 1/3 military, 1/3 civilian and 1/3 contractor. Signing away many years of your life is not a very good option. Also, DO NOT NOT NOT NOT ENLIST WITH A DEGREE!

I'm going to be That Guy and say that going NROTC may provide you with the minimal structure and concrete goal that some people need to get through college successfully. In retrospect it's the path I wish I'd taken. This is very personality dependent, though, and I have no idea if you can really tell when you're 17-18 years old. I'm assuming you're not in college yet.

Similarly, enlisting for the GI Bill is an option if you really feel you need it, but it's still only going to put you in a state school. It's really only the right path if, again, you suspect you're going to turn into a screaming fuckup failing out a year into college without some structure and life experience under your belt. If you DO enlist just for the Bill, don't go nuke, it takes too long and will burn you out. Figure out the slackest job you think you can tolerate the idiocy of with the shortest commitment (this is often something like aviation electronics technician) and do that; the tech skills will be completely eclipsed by your college education so it's really just a matter of staying out of trouble and building human capital with life experiences.
