How many is a couple of years ago? You're making my brain try to draw parallels between the tsunami and the subsequent Fukushima reactor problems and the downfall of tentacle porn.

I can't really give you some kind of exact "year", it's mostly my personal observations from a couple of key events that happened.

1) The rise of "clean" VN adaptations.

I think Kanon is probably the big one here, because once Kanon became this marketing juggernaut that put Key on the map, everyone and their dogs basically wanted to make Key-style nakige (see OP post for definition) which can be easily scrubbed clean for console ports, merchandising, mainstream anime liscensing and so on.

Before that, plot-heavy VNs had to go through the H-anime route anyway if they wanted an adaptation, which usually didn't turn out an optimal product because there's usually only budgets for 3-6 episodes, but um, at least they tried? Nowadays said titles just go for a 26 episodes mainstream anime.

2) The rise of "softporn" Anime.

Basically stuff like Queen's Blade, which allows you to attract people who consume this media for the sexual content, without the pesky "Can't sell or advertise to minors" part that hinders distribution, sales and word of mouth.

Summary of points 1/2 is that non-18+ products make a lot more than 18+ products and companies want to get in on that.

3) Japanese industry throwing a hissy fit about reverse importation.

At some point of time, Japanese industries realized that the Japanese was reverse-importing their titles and buying English releases which were cheaper and uncensored, which led to things like trying to create inferior US releases, forcing "dubbed" only on certain titles and then eventually just going "screw it, the bubble has already burst in the US anyway, let's not even bother"

So with a combination of all factors, most clean VNs are turned into clean anime adaptations, VNs with overly sexual content has to compete with 2), so they're usually passed on, which leaves the available liscenses left to snatch up be dark content that cater to niche audiences. Then the Japanese industry, unable to grow (or even sustain itself), becomes more niche over time that with their profit margins the average length of a new title is like... like, 2 episodes.

For starters, the conversation before that post was about sex scenes in VNs, so I partially thought he might be replying to that. Secondly, The first part of the text that I saw was "...suddenly sitting on top of me...". I also didn't notice the scissors at first because they were hidden behind the text box.

On the topic of VNs getting "sex anime" adaptations and "Clean" adaptations, Princess Love got BOTH, a 13 ep TV show and a 3 ep H-OVA, IIRC. The TV show has some of the most generic animation and WORST animation continuity I've seen in a new anime!

The route splits in Steins;Gate (other than at the very end) all depend on whether you send a D-Mail or not at a crucial point. You don't need a walkthrough for any of the endings other than the True ending.

You also need a walk through to figure out the difference between Kurisu's route and Mayuri's route since it isn't very obvious at first and requires you to replay most of the game.

I liked C;H right up until the non-endings. The A and AB endings are ok and at least acceptable, but the B ending is bullshit. That's a shame because the B route really tied off a lot of loose ends in an interesting way, and then proceeded to set itself on fire and crumble to ash.

I really hope another studio does a remake of the anime since there's a lot of potential to make it really good, firstly by giving it a proper ending.

Here's a guide on how to get the endings though only the final important d-mails for each ending matter except when it comes to Kurisu and the True End. For Kurisu/True you need to hit all of Kurisu's flags right as detailed in the guide by answering her texts right and don't take out your phone around Kurisu unless the plot requires you to. Also the only difference getting the Kurisu and True end is to get the former you need to not answer the final text message.

I read the Yukine route in Clannad. It ended just as it seemed things were only getting started. The VN seems to have quite a lot of filler in general, but I guess that's okay because the jokes are actually funny at times.

Yukine's was the only route short and bland enough that they actually added stuff to it for the anime adaption. Pretty much all the others are better.

Ah Yukine. I would not have been surprised if they had revealed she was Jesus Christ reincarnated. And yeah they pretty much had to change her route in the Anime, really the only one they did change. Though overall the anime's adaptation or the route was better I thought the meaning behind the funeral had a stronger impact in the VM than in the anime.

In the VN Yukine was originally meant to be a main heroine, but for some reason (I think Maeda was just bored with her or something) that was dropped and most of her content was cut.

Now I've finished the Kotomi route in Clannad. It was pretty good and funny. It's also the closest this drat thing has actually gotten to the sort of angst-fest I usually associate with Key. The dramatic plot twist was rather unnecessary and came right out of loving nowhere, but it was tolerable.
As far as I know, I've still got four routes left: Mei, Kappei, Nagisa and After Story. Clannad really does take quite a while to read through.

The 1.0 translation patch of Danganronpa has been released.

http://danganronpa.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/release-danganronpa-english-translation-v1-0/

That being said, is this the translation that people warned me about earlier in the thread that sucks or is this the "good" one (there are apparently multiple ongoing projects?)? There doesn't seem to be anything flagrant while I was playing the demo but you know, maybe my standards aren't that high.

I don't know the exact number of routes you've completed thus far, but School Life won't end until you get all 8 light orbs and finish Nagisa's route. One light orb may go away though if you do things right, and thus you'll finish with 7. If you think you're missing a few, don't forget Misae has a light orb (with dumb requirements) and the teacher whose route is really just a short branch off of Nagisa's.

By the way, After Story isn't really a "route" so much that it's the second half of the game. It's not quite as long as School Life entirely but it's easily longer than any one route.

I finished the Mei and Kappei routes in Clannad.

Mei's route was, uhhh, sort of uncomfortable at times, but I guess it was cute. Very Sunohara-centric, which is cool since he's a pretty fun character.
Kappei's route was similarly pretty funny thanks to Sunohara. It's also the route in which Tomoya is actually only a bit player, which is an interesting deviation from the norm. The gay jokes were a bit too much at times, but I can't say I didn't laugh. The twist was really loving stupid and pointless, which made the latter part of the route pretty forgettable. Still, it was a pretty refreshing route.

So, I played the first episode of Dysfunctional Systems. Despite pretty much being a proof of concept, it turned out to be pretty good, though I think it helps that I chose to rebel against Cyrus the first time through and saw the majority of the plot. Its kind of a shame that the planet gets hosed over no matter what, but choosing to rebel against Cyrus had a lot more detail and effort put into it than following him. I was kind of disappointed that Cyrus, despite being responsible for almost half the lines in the game, felt really samey in his expressions and that most of it was just exposition, but hopefully the second episode will fix these flaws.

You know, whenever it actually comes out.

So this might be interesting, maybe.

Looks like Bamboo (part of Overdrive, who made stuff like Kira Kira) is trying to attempt to use Crowdfunding methods to get a game remade.

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/japanese-visual-novel-dev-turns-to-crowdfunding

They sourced Fuwanovel though, which is a "great" source because they immediately went and posted a follow-up which went "Actually, it's just a fancy way of saying pre-order our game and not a kickstarter at all" so I guess it was too much to hope that Japanese companies were advancing at a non-glacial pace.

I'm hoping that the second game remembers whether you went with him or not and is adjusted based on that. I really want an episodic series of games where the story legitimately deviates in future episodes based on earlier choices.

Yeah, that'd be great, but realistically speaking, that seems like a metric ton of work. I expect the first choice not to matter too much and still leave the majority of possibilities open, but later choices to have more real consequences. Also, the soundtrack was really, really good. I enjoyed it a ton.

That would be really reminiscent of the way Bioware's games worked and how The Walking Dead game by Telltale was exactly.

In Mass Effect, the were certain outcomes in 3 that could not be accessed without accomplishing certain things in 2, and certain characters might not survive between games even though the default starting point for 3 starts with all of the characters present. There are other minor dependencies too.

In TWD, each of the 4 episodes after the first changed based on your actions in the previous episode. By the last episode, your group size could vary from a decent size of 7ish to a measly 2.

It isn't so much that episodic continuity is difficult so much as it takes a lot of effort to keep track of the various paths and write each one well.

Also they really could have used an editor for this series, it's bloated with unnecessary text that it's making some parts feel like a slog now. But that's VNs for you in general, just more apparent here cause it's so loving long.

I've played the walking dead and, short of a few dialogue changes, none of your choices actually matter. I'm on about a game where choices have actual consequences to how things play out. Bioware games, all you get is an antiquated morality system of good/evil, both of which involve exaggerated choices. You either kiss babies or kill puppies.

Neither of those things is what I'm after, which would be rather hard to design but drat having your choices make a significant impact on the story would be totally rad.

Hate story was a fairly decent story, but not much of a game. Let's hope hate+ is more than just opening logs.
