GOP candidate in Sen. John Morse recall also writes "erotic romance"

Colorado is ground zero for Christian values

quote:

For much of the past decade, Jaxine Bubis has written novels under the pseudonym "Jaxine Daniels," and in one of her pieces describes herself as a "grammy who writes erotic romance."
Bubis is one of two Republicans — the other is former City Councilman Bernie Herpin — who have announced their candidacies to replace Morse who faces recall because of his leadership on tougher Colorado gun laws.

In a statement to The Denver Post on Tuesday, Bubis acknowledged writing "Beantown Heat," an erotic novel published by eXtasy Books in 2004.
"Ten years ago, as a stay-at-home mother who was helping to contribute to support our family, I took creative writing classes," she said in the statement. "One project that resulted from those creative writing classes was a fiction romance novel. The novel had very limited publication (less than 50 copies) and I took it off the market as soon I contractually could, which was around eight years ago."

In addition to "Beantown Heat," Bubis has written a series of romantic novels with hockey and military themes. "Beantown Heat" and Bubis' writing name — Daniels — have been removed from the eXtasy Books website.
Paradis said someone else tipped him off about Bubis' books and he did his own research. He doesn't see the books as romance novels but as porn and alleges Bubis has scrubbed much of this content from the Internet.
"I was absolutely aghast," he said. "This is a person supported by the Christian right and conservative lawmakers. They just wanted to jump for the most conservative person in the room and that's stupid."

While that guy posting starving African cows is obviously retarded, the world's rangelands have a serious problem: they're full. We've packed as many cows and sheep as possible in the world's grasslands and then some, and now they're breaking under the strain. From the book Eco-Economy

quote:

Worldwide, almost half of all grasslands are lightly to moderately degraded and 5 percent are severly degraded. The excessive pressures on grasslands, not unlike that on oceanic fisheries, afflicts industrial and developing countries alike. A survey of the U.S. Public grazing lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management in 2000, for example, showed that only 36 percent of native public range-lands have forage that is in good or excellent condition, with most of the remainder of fair or poor quality.

Unfortunately, the world's population is growing, and growing richer. Richer people want more meat, but with global rangeland acreage actually shrinking, they aren't going to get it from grass fed cattle.

The rangeland in your Australian pic doesn't look so hot, from what I see. All visible grass has been munched down to the roots, which could be an indication of overgrazing. The soil is heavily trampled, idk if that matters much in Australian soils but in NA it can both increase risk of erosion and inhibit new grass growth through soil compaction. Probably would rate as "fair" in the U.S. survey.

Bullshit. That page is talking solely about the South Atlantic fishery, and not the ridiculously thriving Gulf of Mexico one, so that's misleading.

One of the more than 14,000 artificial structures in the Gulf of Mexico, which provide prime habitat for red snapper (which has made a complete rebound in the last 20 years) yet are not allowed to be counted in the population the National Marine Fisheries uses to determine the official population (which is used to determine the snapper season). Instead of a massive success story resulting from the decade long virtual shutdown of snapper fishing in the Gulf, the federal government clings to the view that snapper are endangered.

They're so loving endangered that anyone hunting fish in a similar area, such as triggerfish, have to catch and release (and vent) around 5-6 snapper for every other fish they catch. Oh- and the same federal government that still clings to a 28 day, 2 per person limit (based on bad science)? Well lookie lookie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYFKLkC7tpE

Their policy on destroying old oil rigs is eliminating some of the richest, most mature reef habitat in the Gulf and killing thousands of fish at a time to boot.

Global fish stocks are certainly in a crisis, especially apex predators like tuna or shark. But the bad science and dumb policy surrounding snapper mean maybe Pew should be harping on another fish.

Uh, you seem angry. Angry and confused. Let me set a few things straight:

1. The federal government doesn't list red snapper as endangered.

2. The Red Snapper fishery isn't shut down. The 2012 catch limit was set at 8 million pounds. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2012/20120529_redsnapper.html

3. The NOAA is fully aware of the recovery. Total catch limits have been increasing. These guys are professionals and know exactly what they're doing, sorry they don't meet every petulant demand for longer season and higher catches from the people who nearly extirpated snappers 2 decades ago. Here's the "bad science" which is the basis of federal catch limits

Sorry for the bad quality. the graphs show observed weight of red snapper doubling between 2007 and 2013

You might just not understand what the NOAA is trying to accomplish here. Their aim isn't just to maintain catches, but to INCREASE them, which necessarily means catching less than the maximum possible. If you really think they're just a bunch of gently caress-up feds here's their actual reasoning behind season length and catch limits, go ahead and point out where they're slipping up:
http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/sustainable_fisheries/gulf_fisheries/red_snapper/documents/pdfs/2013_red_snapper_emergency_regs.pdf

I didn't claim they were officially endangered (or didn't intend to). Under pressure, threatened, in need of protection, whatever synonym would have been less confusing.

I know. I was one of those people riding 20 miles out to catch two fish. I've also hauled up so many snapper out-of-season (almost all of whom have vent marks, so they've been caught before too) as bycatch that I'm well aware of how thriving they are, thus my anger at the ridiculously short season and stupid bag limits. I've also helped out on a commercial snapper boat (only once, because fuckkkkk) before.

Sure, this is talked about quite a bit here on the Gulf Coast. Average snapper catch is way, way larger than it was before the lockdown. The crackdown worked; I never once argued that. I argued that the science behind the policy is flawed (justify to me excepting artificial structures from fish counts). The policy is supposed to result from the science. Garbage in, garbage out.

You might not understand what a tremendous cock-up the NOAA has made of the entire process. After the Fishery Management Council instituted an emergency rule allowing NMFS to punish different states for not dovetailing their seasons/bag limits to the federal one, they went far overboard and punished Florida, Louisiana and Texas by drastically curtailing their allowable federal season.

Because AL and MS had nothing to gain by making their season longer (nobody's catching snapper within 3 miles there), they complied and were allowed the whole 28 day season. Texas got 12 days. Louisiana got loving nine. It was a pissing contest. It was bad policy, with no scientific basis. They were purely wielding a club. Then Louisiana retaliated with a somewhat laughable amendment that stated their jurisdiction didn't just extend 3 miles off coast, but 3 leagues. NMFS escalated it by threatening to put most of their enforcement efforts in 3-10 miles off of Louisiana.

Charter captains from LA weren't going to risk it anyway (similar situation as CA marijuana growers- state says OK, but that doesn't mean poo poo to the feds). Jindal filed suit, Texas joined, then Florida joined as well. Midway through snapper season, a judge overturned it, saying that NMFS had no right to restrict each state's season for purely political reasons. The devil of it is, each state really should have different seasons- managing the Gulf like it's one homogenous soup is stupid. But NMFS would rather swing their dick around and punish Louisiana, which has the largest easily reachable concentration of snapper off state waters.

Your confidence in their abilities is cute. They're as subject to bad decision-making, wrong priorities and petty bullshit as any other organization. It took them over 20 years to figure out how to manage redfish after it was nearly fished to collapse. Their poor stewardship of the Gulf is leading to equally bad reactions- Gulf Coast states are lobbying to allow themselves the ability to manage their own fish populations, which is a tremendously bad idea that's obvious to anyone that's seen how competitive the decision-making behind their bass fishing, deer and turkey seasons are.

No poo poo it doesn't look too hot - as a consequence that particular station is apparently stocked at a density of one (1) animal per square kilometer. If the starving african cow had 100 hectares to graze she'd probably be in better shape too. I guess if you have a lot of empty otherwise worthless land this might be a viable way of producing calories, I just cannot get my head around the logistics of so few animals in such a vast space.

If this is how we're supposed to feed 7 billion people a first world diet then we are as proper hosed as that cow I posted.
