One of the more than 14,000 artificial structures in the Gulf of Mexico, which provide prime habitat for red snapper (which has made a complete rebound in the last 20 years) yet are not allowed to be counted in the population the National Marine Fisheries uses to determine the official population (which is used to determine the snapper season). Instead of a massive success story resulting from the decade long virtual shutdown of snapper fishing in the Gulf, the federal government clings to the view that snapper are endangered.

They're so loving endangered that anyone hunting fish in a similar area, such as triggerfish, have to catch and release (and vent) around 5-6 snapper for every other fish they catch. Oh- and the same federal government that still clings to a 28 day, 2 per person limit (based on bad science)? Well lookie lookie:

Their policy on destroying old oil rigs is eliminating some of the richest, most mature reef habitat in the Gulf and killing thousands of fish at a time to boot.



Global fish stocks are certainly in a crisis, especially apex predators like tuna or shark. But the bad science and dumb policy surrounding snapper mean maybe Pew should be harping on another fish.
