Crossed is by Garth Ennis, who is kind of famous for his depravity going into self-parody. If he and Ashley Cope were anything alike, this most recent chapter would have featured Duane fellating a dolphin or Lemuel eating an aborted fetus. I mean, the last scene with Duane was hard to read, no doubt, but for all the right reasons. It was the product of a very long emotional commitment in a character we (or at least I) desperately wanted to be okay. That's kind of the way to do tragedy. I haven't read the meta sources for Unsounded. I have seen Ashley's DA gallery and I mostly see what I see on every webcomic artist's DA gallery: drawings of their characters, frequently naked. That's just kind of what they do. But I'm inclined to believe the person who was able to keep me on the edge of my seat for the entirety of the last chapter, even though I already knew what was going to happen, when she says she can make a villain seem unlikable.

Sorry clarification derail: The first Crossed is by Garth wich is what he was saying he liked, the other later volumes were by other dudes and contain the giddy, grotesque, gore porn that they found disturbing.

I really like Unsounded, I didn't read any of the extra material outside of the main comic so when Murkoph appeared and started licking a small child I assumed he'd be killed off relatively soon. Then I found out he's the author's favorite character. Whelp.

There's nothing I can see to like about Murkoph, and the khert as a setting would do enough of a job of making the scene just as unsettling (if not moreso), so it's not like he's adding anything. Theoretically he could do something to justify his existence later on, but for now, the best we can hope is that Settle and Duane leave him behind in the khert.

The unwitting hero being tricked into releasing an unspeakable monster from its prison and having to eventually vanquish it is a plot device that is as old as dirt if not older, it shouldn't be hard to find a place for him in the story.

Yeah but I think it's pretty clear loads of people don't want to see him as a recurring villain entire arcs are oriented around, in fact that's sort of exactly the primary concern being expressed. Dude's not horrible and hateful in the sense that he'd be a great antagonist, he's just unpleasant to the point you want to stop watching. I mean, I'll buy that he can work and Cope knows what the character is and is good for, but there's already one gross sociopathic pedophile major character who doesn't go slithering around naked licking children and that's plenty.

More of a "Hey Sette, you hosed up and you're going to have to fix it" sort of plotline. edit: Now that you mention it if Murkoph makes it out of the khert a confrontation between him and Starfish seems like it could actually be quite exceptional if played very, very carefully. Word of god on zombies is they have limited sensation and a limited ability to feel pain. Duane can really only feel heat and pressure anymore, and he only hurts if his bones break. He doesn't like the sun, but he can handle it. So the stomp probably didn't bother Murkoph any since Murkoph is also dead. Sette's really interesting, but we don't have enough knowledge to even guess correctly yet. External sources, but my speculation follows: There were once lions in Kasslyne, but they were wiped out by the Ssaelit. This is because Ssael, their mortal-ascended-to-godhood, was betrayed by his grandson to the Gefendurs, who fed him to lions. The Ssaelit eventually ended up taking the lion as one of their symbols, because it was post-death that Ssael really got going. Anyway, Sette's naturally sharp teeth, lion tail and big hair (actual author word is all Kasslynian lions had manes, not just the male ones) all point to some definite link with her and the lost lions. Her ability to interact barehanded with the khert (and fall into it) also point to a connection to pymary that nobody's figured out/noticed yet. Frummagen may know SOMETHING about her, since he clearly got ahold of her at some point and wasn't inclined to let her go, going so far as to adopt her.

I mean it is really old and things could have changed since then, but the fact that I remember there used to be a comment on it that said the lion was her brother and it's now been removed, makes me think it's something the artist doesn't want people knowing yet. And I never knew Sette's teeth were filed. That's kinda, uh... horrifying.

Fun speculation stuff that probably isn't true: Go back and look at Duane when he was preaching; the face paint represents scars from being clawed by a lion because you know, his god was killed by lions. Now look at Murk's face in his closeups.

Unsounded has gotten into my brain. You know when you sometimes read a thing for too long and for a certain amount of time afterwards all of your thoughts sort of take on the style of whatever you read? The word "nawt" has danced through my skull way more often than it has any right to. Avoiding Ashley's personal Formspring really is a good idea for enjoying the comic to its fullest. She gives away so much and does it so casually that it deflates a lot of the mystique around events, to say nothing of her numerous TMI responses (see: pretty much everything regarding Murkoph). On the other hand, Duane and Sette's in-character formsprings are both informative and hilarious. Murkoph himself fits as an antagonist in the khert - between his indestructibility and his habit of warping from place to place, he comes off as a bad dream with skin on, which is appropriate for the nature of the place - but I dunno how well he'll carry on in the physical plane. Maybe he can start by getting some pants.

So this is basically going to be the Worst Day for Duane. He woke up from a dream where he got to watch his daughter die again, finds himself with an unconscious Sette and a dead half-eaten guy, knows that both are his fault, is about to engage in a zany cover-up to get out of the love hotel before the cleaners find the mess, and when he finally manages to limp out of there on his shattered leg, he's going to find out that he is, technically, in Cresce. Man, it's been almost a year in real-time since he first went to sleep.
