I just realized Jon's ADWD story is similar to Cercei's AFFC arc; they are both doomed to be ousted from their places of power due to a comical sequence of bad decisions. Their motivations are complete polar opposites, but their MOs are actually pretty similar in that they systematically alienate everyone around them. Cercei's chapters and goof ups are funnier on reread, but Jon is just as tragically bullheaded and dumb in his own way.

That's what happened in Dany's arc too. None of them are cut out for their jobs and they all pay the price.

Thought this was appropriate but I was reading through Entertainment Monthly and they had people tell who they thought the best GoT villains were. Joff, Tywin, Ramsay or The Mountain. I stared at awhile before I realized something was amiss.

The picture for the Mountain was Meryn Trant.

They kind of hosed up the mountain real bad in the show, he almost never appears and never does anything. I know it's because of the whole recasting thing, but pretty much the only thing show watchers will remember him from is him fighting Sandor in the tournament during season 1. I'm pretty sure some people in the baby thread will be confused when he reappears for the Red Viper duel. I don't think there's even a single mention of him raping anyone in the show.

What's the pretext for Oberyn showing up in the TV show going to be, anyway? The Martells are made out to be pretty important before the Blackwater in the books and he has totally legitimate reasons to be in King's Landing afterward, but in the show the only mention of Dorne I recall was when Myrcella was sent away.

But yeah, I agree that they haven't handled the Mountain well.

I re-read Jon's LC chapters, and man, he's even dumber than I remembered. Not only does alienate all of his advisers by ignoring and belittling them, he also completely ditches his old friends and sends away most of the men who are loyal to him. And when Melisandre repeatedly warns him about the assassination attempt, his response is always, "The girl that came to the Wall wasn't Arya, I can't trust anything you say." He even ignores the simple, sage advice of keeping his wolf with him, just like Robb.

I hope he stays dead.

I told him the sequel will have sexy vampires and introduce Demi Turduckyen and he's mad that we suck at writing in a timely fashion.

He's never really shown doing anything in the books either. Just hearsay about how much of an rear end in a top hat he's being to the commoners.
Well, there was the part where he was orchestrating the interrogations with the Tickler, but even then he wasn't visually DOING anything of note.

True that we don't get to experience gregor's actions first hand too often in the books but there are many detailed accounts of what a huge rear end in a top hat he is. Breaking Pia's face, feeding Vargo his own body parts, raping the innkeeper's daughter, murdering his own father and sister etc.

lovely leaders are a staple of asoiaf. I love the idea of a quest for power, then having no clue how to use it.
