Did anyone read some of the novels in the expanded Metro universe / knows of a decent resource which tallies up which ones are worth reading?

I've been playing through the original one, and I'm sure as hell picking Last Light up.Xander77 posted:Did anyone read some of the novels in the expanded Metro universe / knows of a decent resource which tallies up which ones are worth reading? I have a copy of Metro 2033 and the translation is by no means perfect but better than I had expected. There aren't a lot of errors but they're there. The universe is incredibly compelling to me and totally overshadows any flaws the translation brings.

I can't speak for how well the translation is since I don't know Russian either, but the book makes perfect sense in English. There were a few typos here and there, but I've been reading the Kindle version which may be slightly different. On Steam if you own a copy of Metro: Last Light they offer a copy of the Metro 2033 book for free. If you buy the book, though, I would recommend against the Kindle version. It has some serious formatting issues. Here's the comparison I posted a while back comparing the PDF from Steam (which I assume is exactly what's in the paperback) and the Kindle version:

So Prokhorov went on a Russian gamedev podcast recently and apparently their next game is going to be an open-world "Stalker in Space", the trailer they already have strongly reminded the interviewer of the Harry Harrison novels (I got the impression it was the Deathworld books) and it's highly likely they're Kickstarting it because "loving tired of publishers". So that's cool. Megazver fucked around with this message at 21:49 on Jul 1, 2013 |

Well, being the philistine I am, I've never heard of Harry Harrison, but "STALKER in space" sounds approximately loving awesome. Did they go into any broad strokes as to when they might be kickstarting it?

Is there a cheat to add filter time? I ran out in the swamp and don't really wanna play this crap anymore worrying about that. Time limits are the worst mechanic.

There should be several in the swamp area inside the caches. Also, I think sprinting decreases filter time faster (not sure about that one though, can anyone clarify?). That's all the advice I can give you that worked for me.

sauer kraut posted:Is there a cheat to add filter time? If you're familiar with Cheat Engine/other signature scanners, you can add an arbitrary amount of time to your filter pool once you locate the time in memory. Alternatively, there's a silly pseudo-exploit in the game wherein you can repeatedly equip/de-equip your gasmask to extend your filter time (after a quick breath from the mask, you can hold your breath for like ~30 secs; rinse and repeat). In other news, info on the first DLC should be dropping next week.

So, uh... I edited my user.cfg file to change the fov, as detailed here. For some reason, I think saving the file in wordpad on windows 7 has done some formatting. Some terrible, awful, no good formatting. So now when I launch the game I get a brief intro with all the logos (can't do without that) and as we get to the corpse in a gas mask, I get a window full of text commands. How do I fix this?

Woop woop, Faction pack is out on the 16th.quote:The ‘Faction Pack’ includes three original single player missions, each casting the player as a different specialist from the warring Factions. Returning to some classic locations from Metro 2033, these missions feature new weapons, the return of a truly terrifying mutant foe, and offer three distinct gameplay challenges… The Ranger-in-training mission might even scratch that STALKER itch a bit...

Is anyone getting crazy slideshowing on the Reich mission?

There appears to be some serious optimization issues on the Reich mission. However, the Reich mission is loving awful and you're really not missing anything by just skipping it. Fortunately, the sniper mission is pretty badass and allows you to revisit the fairly iconic Metro 2033 level 'Outpost'. And the real star of the show is the Ranger mission, which is like a mostly linear mini-STALKER minigame. Set in the 'Great Library' from Metro 2033. Seriously, it's pretty cool. Oh, and don't even bother with Ranger Hardcore on this. You'll die 100+ times on the first mission, the second mission is stealth so it's easy on ANY difficulty and the inventory management aspect of the Ranger mission is implemented such that the lack of a HUD makes you into some sort of retarded lab chimp every time you return to the base.

If you run out of ammo ever with the minigun on Ranger, you lose. You can't reload in time to not die, no matter what you do. And if you get a checkpoint with your gun unloaded, you have to start over because of that. Normal is much better about it. I'm not really digging Ranger all that much in Last Light in general though. I don't like having one less weapon, and having no way at all to see what you have outside of trading posts is just annoying. RBA Starblade fucked around with this message at 02:48 on Jul 17, 2013 |

I didn't really mind the Reich mission all that much. It's basically a turret section and pretty disposable, but I thought it was fun just raising hell. There's unlimited ammo to the left of the firing line, by the way. Took a couple times playing it to discover that. The ranger section was really, really cool though. It felt a lot like 2033 in that you're constantly worried about resources in a big way. It's probably worth the cost of the DLC by itself.

The Ranger DLC section is bugged for me. I pay bullets and I won't get more filters. I am down to 46 seconds.

Where do we set whether we're in Ranger mode for the Faction Pack missions? I seem to be defaulting to Ranger Hardcore in all of them which SUCKS. I was playing the main campaign in Ranger, so maybe I need to start a new campaign (ugh) in normal mode, then load the Faction Pack? Because not having a viewable inventory while scavenging the library and buying stuff is terrible.
