Anyone else occasionally think "less is more" when they go nuts on the specialist cinematography? Sometimes I just want to look at the drat car, not a bunch of ball bearings and inkblots

Absolutely. And it's hard to keep coming up with new ways to show cars so I feel like they've gone to the long exposure light blur thing a lot the last few years.

Another ok episode. I agree with the criticism about Hammond and May's segments. They have been done before and is starting to feel the same. Clarkson's review of the F12 more than made up for those two segments. The F12 is probably the first Ferrari for a long time where I like the look of it (and the LaFerrari)

Hammond's coy "ooh I hope nothing happens to the office container that's right by the track" line didn't do the segment any favours. I mean even apart from all the trailers showing him drive through it. His older crash race segments had better editing and/or scripting too, with this one it was extremely obvious that they came up with three "big moment" stunts (is Graham Linehan doing the scripting now or what), and they edited them into the race footage more or less haphazardly. Older segments were "there's a race in which outrageous poo poo starts to happen", this one's "there's a race in which an unrelated clip is spliced of Hammond driving through a container" and it's impossible not to notice.

I think alot of the issues with Top Gear is that it's gotten old. Nothing interesting happens if you know exactly where things are going in a typical episode.

# ? Jul 9, 2013 14:49 |

My understanding is that they film a load of these dumb race type events for each series (because they are super cheap), and then use them when planned segments aren't ready on time, or when a segment just turns out to be too poo poo (even for them) to air. I think in a series 14 episode they used a race segment that they had filmed 2 years before because the planned segment was awful and they didn't have anything else that would fit.

I'm sad to say that Top Gear US got it right. They should just do road trips in cars every episode. They can review the car they pick while doing the challenges.

On his own, he's such a generic presenter, totally by-the-numbers. He really needs someone eccentric like May or over the top like Clarkson to make him look good.

All May all the time is pretty good, though. He's also a terribly nice fellow in real life.

Although he does smell a bit. I find May's shows outside of TG to be the most entertaining. Clarkson's occasional war shows always seem a bit too masturbatory/Boy's Own, and Hammond is just... bland. I think he's fine on subjects he's actually passionate about but he's a trained generic face so any real character rarely comes through. May's shows are bordering on twee a little bit but he's a really engaging presenter. I bet he never in a million years expected to end up as the face of Top Gear / popular science for TV / drive Veyrons / go into space / etc, when he was a magazine editor. You can't plan that kind of career trajectory.

He had the music degree as well before any of that, so becoming a car magazine editor may not have been his original career plan in the first place.

I think Top Gear is at its best when they're doing road trips in other countries. Their goofy obliviousness and affable friendship/rivalry bits work best then. What I'm saying is Top Gear UK should spend a year taping segments in the United States. THERE ARE MORE ROADS THERE. Alaska to Florida road trip please.

It's not a Top Gear road trip if the cars don't look like something out of Mad Max by the end of it. I'm down with that happening to million pound supercars if you are.

The best episode possible is them driving the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, and the Porsche 918 across the whole Pan American highway. So what if it takes a month to shoot?

He had to be part of a security convoy and drive like a total rear end in a top hat to do it. It's sort of weird watching a Canadian try to consider the idea that in other parts of the world, the government (and traffic laws) are less important than whoever you are working for.
