i love screaming trees/mark lanegan and finally heard blues funeral just now, it was a huge letdown and it made me sad

of course the critics "loved" it because mark was able to establish himself as an Officially Cool Music Guy by the time he did the album but the actual songs are so wrong and bad, i'd say that mark sounds like a guest singer but that would imply another artist or group to feature him and this stuff doesn't sound like actual people deliberately came up with it. i guess that the foundation is technically the usual electric and acoustic guitars, drums, etc. but it's mixed as this overbearing wall of sound and swirled around with a shitload of synthesizers and production gimmicks that go horribly with the other instruments, mark's voice, and the overall (attempted) dark tone of the album. it's the most unpleasantly incoherent musical atmosphere i've ever heard not quite, i just remembered tormato and even without it the tunes and lyrics would still be weak and disappointing. on the plus side mark still has the most badass voice ever but i can listen to that on a good album like dust or scraps at midnight so who gives a poo poo

you should listen to his other stuff if you like that, it's really good. screaming trees was basically grungy alternative rock with folk and blues influences (and a ton of cool '70s keyboards on their last album), mark's solo music is a lot slower and shifts further away from straight-up rock. i'd say that sweet oblivion and dust are good places to start with screaming trees (dust is my favorite and one of my favorite albums ever, it's the one with the keyboards), whiskey for the holy ghost and scraps at midnight are good picks for solo lanegan.

the campfire headphase is their most 'accessible' album probably largely due to the use of guitars

if you like that then Music Has The Right To Children is a good one to try next

Geogaddi is good but dark and complex like a fine wine :chord:

Tomorrow's Harvest just came out and I like it a lot, but the fixation on a near post apocalyptic future might turn a lot of people off

anyway they're good and if you don't like them oh well

the campfire headphase is lovely background music (though the last few tracks are ok). i dunno it's hard to really suggest a good boards of cadada record, theyre all pretty similar, just their early stuff is more like generic dance music and they wandered off into dumbass snowboarding footage soundtrack territory with campfire headphase. youve got to be easily impressed by texture and stuff maybe
