ODY-C by Fraction and Ward sounds pretty cool so I'm excited to see what that looks like.

Also, I wonder what Millar means when he says a “Marvel Universe for the 21st Century,”. I mean it's not like there isn't a Marvel universe in the 21st Century, maybe he's going to do a crossover of all his Millar World books.

All the heros will get together for a event called Crisis of the Infinite Rapes. Millar is the worst and the only reason I pick up Jupitor's Legacy is Frank Quitely.

The worst thing about Jupiter's Legacy is that Quitely isn't even bringing his B game.

Man a lot of those books look really drat cool. I've been stoked for Satellite Sam since I heard about it, I'm not even that big on Fraction but it looks like a return to old-school, good Chaykin, and I know Fraction's a big fan of Black Kiss so I trust him to do it justice.

I thought it was good. Chaykin was great, really washes the stink of his recent Marvel stuff away, and the book feels like it could become something really interesting depending on how far they decide to push things.

So, I just got back into comics over the past couple weeks after a too-long hiatus (about 3 years, if memory serves—whenever Ex Machina ended), and boy am I glad I did.

Anyone here picked up Catalyst Comix #1? I really liked it. I'm impressed that they managed to take the superhero genre and make it feel weird and fresh again, even if a large majority of that effect is from what I think is just Joe Casey throwing around words whose meanings he may or may not know. I imagine I might tire of this if it were an ongoing series, but I'm sure I can take it for the planned 9 issues. In any case, I'm on board and excited for #2 next month.

Also, Satellite Sam seems really cool. It was a bit confusing for me to read at first, which may have to do with this head cold I'm getting over or may just be choice of word balloon styles and similarity in appearance between many of the characters, but in any case I like it. As someone who's interested in film and TV production, I really like the setting, and I love the way the comic takes its time. Many comics feel rushed, by comparison, so I really appreciate the pacing.

I also picked up Lazarus, and as much as I want to, I just can't get myself to really enjoy it. It just feels way too obvious to me what's going to happen, and the politics of it are just way too blatant to the point of being preachy.

Also, I obviously loved Saga, which, so far, seems like it's going to be BKV's best work. I thought I'd grown bored of fantasy (this series feels way more like "space fantasy" to me than actual "science fiction," which makes sense considering the heavy influence of Star Wars), but I guess not. I can't wait until #13 comes out. I wish I'd jumped on the series sooner, because I really like reading and collecting singles, but at least trades are easier to shove into the hands of friends as I implore them to read it.

On the recommendation of a guy at my LCS I picked up the first three issues of East of West, which seems pretty exciting. I'm not 100% sold yet that it's going to turn out awesome, but I like the ride so far and I'm ready for #4.

And finally, I've started reading Fatale, and though I'm only about 3 issues in so far, I really like it. A bit wordy for my taste, which is probably part of why I'm not running through it as quickly as I normally do with comics, but at least they're good words, and I'm guessing that when I finally beat this cold I'll be in a better state to read through them.

In all, I'm super excited to be back into comics again. It really does seem to be the most exciting medium for storytelling right now.

Read Saga vol. 2 last night. I was a bit apprehensive about how they'd follow up volume 1, and whether the wackiness (for lack of a better word) would grow tired or predictable, but this is not the case so far. Absolutely loving the art style and the writing. Very eagerly awaiting the next instalment. I'm guessing the next trade is at least 7 or 8 months away?

Sounds about right. #13 comes out August 14. Assuming they can stick to a 1-per-month schedule (which they hopefully should be able to since I think that was the major point behind the hiatus) that'd put #18 at mid-January, and the trade would probably be soon after.

I think I might start having to read it issue by issue. The second volume thoroughly hooked me on this. All the other comics I've read and enjoyed so far have either been individual, or long finished, so I've never had the issue of having to wait for the next trade.

Just to let you know, the pacing on Saga is really good for reading it in singles. Some comics I read in singles and it just 'feels' like it's written for the trade, but BKV does a great job of pacing each issue so that it reads excellent as a single issue or in trade.

Is there any chance that this upcoming Star Wars: Lucas Draft miniseries is going to be any good? It seems like the idea could be cool if done well, but it could also very easily just end up being awful.

Depending on which draft, it could be hilariously bad or sleep-inducingly bad. You know how there's a bunch of awful boring political stuff in the prequels, and the Jedi come off kind of like disciplinarian assholes more than wise monks? Multiply both of those by 10x, add a scene where a 15 year old fucks a maid in a closet, and that's Lucas' original draft.

... that actually sounds kind of enticing. wouldn't be the worst way to risk $2.

Anyway, I actually came in here to say that, now that my cold is (mostly) gone, I've just blasted through the first trade of Fatale and holy poo poo is this good. It's actually scary. I'm really impressed that Brubaker and Phillips have me feeling actually scared for characters that I know will survive at least another 50 years. And the art (especially the cover art) is just fantastic. Normally if I get into a book this far in, I just stick with trades, but this one's worth getting in singles for the cover art alone. Does it stay this good?

Go read Multiple Warheads and Escalator? Then determine whether you want to delve into Graham's porn comics?

I would've liked more King City and Graham has said he's got a couple other stories he'd like to tell, but there are rights issues. Because Tokyopop.

I read the first two issues of Rogues and they were pretty good. The series is a big homage to Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories: two thieves live in a sword & sorcery world, but they have problems other than having to save kingdoms or fight old gods. The first storyline deals with the protagonists being cursed to have a chicken follow them everywhere, and they must figure out how to life the curse. It's funny and well-written, and I hope the creators can keep it up.

The Image run of the turtles was kind of bad, the art really hard to decipher and the stories more violent just for the heck of it. Ironically they are also the only turtles comic I have a complete run of.

It's a real shame that the release dates and marketing have been so dodgy for Nowhere Men. I really want to like it but it's tough.

Also, IDW is going to be re-releasing The Maxx in a monthly format with new coloring:

quote:

The monthlies (in a recolored form) are meant to re-familiarize new readers who may not even know of "Maxx." Plus I'm doing a new, painted cover for each issue, which means that, while I'll try to look "normal" in the beginning, eventually my covers degenerate to my usual all psychotic-abstract style, which might be entertaining -- or disturbing -- to watch. Short of a new series, new painted covers are a nice way to revisit "The Maxx" in small spurts.

And remember, monthly issues let readers check out the recolored version and help them decide about a series of hard covers later next year -- like the Absolutes. If we're going to do it, we may as well get it right this time.

As someone who has never read The Maxx, I'm actually pretty excited about this.

Well, that's unexpected (the remastering, not you not reading it). I've had the trades for-what-seems-like-ever now, and never thought them wanting, but I'm hoping that this recoloring is a more successful effort than a lot of others posted on these boards. I hope we get some comparison shots soon.

Archie had got the 90's bad by that time :(

Mutanimals all die except for Slash, who dies three issues later killing Maligna, Null, Scul and Bean. Another four issues later it's a story with the future Turtles about a guy stealing brains (including Hitler's) and also zombies. That story started out with a dream sequence of Raphael's skeleton laughing, arms over his head after acid rain dissolved his flesh.

EDIT: Oh, also the team that killed the mutanimals are killed in their first appearance.
