Can I ask how far ahead you guys try to stay of released episodes, and also roughly how long an average episode takes to fully produce?

Also fantastic to hear about your surge in popularity.

We try to stay quite a bit ahead, so that it's never a panic.

Right now we have scripts written up to episode 31, recordings done up to episode 30, and fully edited, finished episodes up to episode 29.

It's hard to answer how long it takes because it varies so much from episode to episode. I'd say the average episode is maybe 5-6 hours of writing. I don't know how long it takes Cecil to record. Then it's usually only 1-2 hours for me to sound edit the whole thing together, unless we're doing something more complex with the sound that week, which we occasionally do.

But some episodes take a lot longer than that. A Story About You took me a long time to write, because I was trying to figure out how to do something completely out of format for us. The same for One Year Later, which was a bitch to write. I don't know how long it took Jeffrey to write the Sandstorm episodes, but I would imagine a long time.

The Sandstorm episodes were super time intensive, because not only was there two scripts to write, but I also had to record a guest session with Kevin, make all the sound effects, and compose and record all the Desert Bluffs music. All in the week before I was supposed to leave the country for a month. That was a stressful one.

Given that it looks like it's a whole RP thing instead of just a couple scattered pieces of fan art, I'd say nope.

A Story About You is my favorite episode. I know this is cheesy to say, but I thought it was beautiful. I'm glad you take the time to try new things even while your normal format works so well.

I absolutely loved "A story about you." So melancholic and disturbing and beautiful, too. I got a little hyped up with the second-person stuff at the beginning of the latest episode because it reminded me of the first time I heard about myself on the radio.

Better just because their fanbase isn't creepily latching on to and sexualizing a mediocre little kids TV show. Homestuck is at least written for nerdy teens and college students.

like 90% of the characters in Homestuck are in their early-to-mid teens and there is so much Homestuck porn on tumblr, so I'm not really sure it is better.

oh, have I got some GREAT news for you!

Just out of curiosity, and maybe this is a question you can't answer particularly in depth, but how much does this show cost to produce, per episode, and where is most of the money spent? I don't really have any experience or knowledge with regards to podcasting, never mind a podcast with the unique format that yours offers, so it's had me wondering. If I'd have to guess I imagine most of it would go towards paying Cecil (and now some of the new guests we're starting to see).

The production doesn't really cost much at all, other than the upfront costs of a better computer for sound editing and mics and stuff. Most of our expenses is in producing events and t-shirts. But also there's a massive investment in time. Each episode is hours and hours of work by multiple people, all of us working for no money upfront. So stuff like donations goes towards helping us afford to keep doing that, and helping to, for instance, compensate Cecil for his acting work.

With the way things are working out, and assuming donations don't massively flag, I may be able to move away from my day job and start doing Night Vale full time within the next couple months. Obviously this would mean I'd have the time to arrange a lot more Night Vale content, like bonus episodes, video shorts, books, live events (probably even outside of our local area), and new types of merch, so it would benefit everyone really.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for shining some light on it. When I am in less significant dire straits, financially, I plan on buying your book and shirts, as well as making donations. I hope that the donations continue to roll in, because Welcome to Night Vale is a pretty beautiful production, and helps me get through half an hour of my lovely, monotonous job every two weeks.

Also the idea of video shorts is ridiculously exciting, though mainly because I'm a student in that field and live somewhat near your area, and a guy can dream, right? :v:

To be fair there have been podcasts that break the mold before. They just sorta sucked.

Personally I'm kinda really hoping for old fashioned radio drama to pick up again as a podcast format. I mean radio shows/podcasts like This American Life and Wiretap regularly run fictional segments,so what's stopping a full on radio play?

If you like radio show kind of thing you can check out decoder ring theater. They do a super hero show set during WW2 called The Red Panda and a PI show called Black Jack Justice. They are well acted and written very well.

I like Black Jack Justice more than Red Panda personally. There's some other fully voiced ones I've found of varying quality. Darker Projects has a few some are fan fictions while others are original works but they have an erratic at best update schedule. Leviathan Chronicles is another one. I'm not too sure if I actually like it or not and I've only listened to the first season but season 2 finally started coming out recently. The last that comes to mine is We're Alive. It's an ok zombie apocalypse podcast but I fell behind during one of their season breaks and haven't listened in awhile.

You want the Thrilling Adventure Hour. 'Sparks Nevada' (and it's spin-off, 'Cactoid Jim') and the older 'Tales from the Black Lagoon' and 'War of Two Worlds' episodes are heavily plot-dependent, so listen to them in order. 'Beyond Belief', 'Captain Laserbeam', 'Moonshine Holler', 'Jumbo the Elephant' and 'Amelia Earhart' can be listened to in any order.
