I still want to know what the story was behind the original reason they wouldn't let him go. All I can seem to find is something about not obeying a fire marshal during qualifying.

Does it really need to be more of a reason than "the guy in charge of (fire) safety says 'wait here'"? As far as I can remember they didn't want to let him onto the skidpad because they weren't done making sure it was clear and safe to let him on. He pushed through the fire marshall telling him to wait until they were done. I sure as hell wouldn't want to meet a moron on the track who can't even listen to as simple as "wait here".

I've been watching these Russian car crash compilation videos for a while now and I really find myself wondering what the hell is going on there. Every few videos you see some shitcan going 2-3X the speed of traffic causing some sort of wreck, or people making painfully avoidable mistakes. Why is driving in Russia so apocalyptic?

A few things: -Alcohol -No real "driving" culture: Private car ownership only became a thing in the 1990s and is only just becoming widespread. This means pretty much everyone on the road is a relatively inexperienced driver. -Alcohol -Bad roads and poor driving conditions: Weather in Russia is bad; combine it with terribly built roads and idiotic markings (lanes ending suddenly and the like) and it makes for trouble. -Alcohol -Lack of law enforcement: Why pay attention to traffic rules when you know the cops don't give a poo poo, and if they do, it's because they're fishing for bribes. -Alcohol

Consequently, Russian people don't really give a poo poo, which is especially bad when you're driving around a ton and a half of steel and plastic. You guys are also forgetting that no one is going to upload a video of people driving normally. REALLY the reason you think Russia is full of crazy people everywhere is because of the abundant insurance fraud that goes on. If it were as common as the United States, or any other country for that matter, you'd see just as many crash/fail compilations for said country. As the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Not to say that some of the stuff you see is culturally motivated.

The extreme speed in places where it's a terrible idea to do it, ignoring traffic devices, trying to make a left on a red from 3 lanes over, the obvious lack of reflexes or common sense, it all points to what MrChips is saying. At least most of the carnage you see in Chinese compilations is people going slowly and possibly in recognition of the fact that driving is scary and new for them. The aggression I see seems to line up with fatalistic culture as well.

I wouldn't say for certain that you couldn't record just as many examples in another country with a sufficiently large enough driving population in the same time period. The lack of dash cams in other countries makes it difficult to prove or disprove that. I'd wager it's just as common in the areas surrounding Russia, and the US would probably be able to keep pace. Purely speculation, however. For Content, one of my favorite driveby videos. Mazda's 787b on the Mulsanne straight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtUEPwHnxmU It gets loud. I wager that there are more towns/areas in Russia where there is both significant car ownership, even if it's just a Lada, and where the population is also relatively spread out, allowing for hilarious high speed antics. The parts of China with high levels of car ownership tend to be concentrated into densely populated cities, while the rural areas are still dirt poor and mostly riding tractors/scooters. China is the only place in the world I've ever been where highways have legal minimum speed limits, that are clearly marked everywhere. Which would be nice if they were ever enforced, because the normal flow of traffic on the highways here is composed of about 80% of drivers doing a reasonable 60-70mph while the other 20% happily putters along (often in the left lane) at 25-30mph.

I just GIS'd to get a picture and I guess a lot of states have them.

Some members of the NSX Club were contacted by Honda Canada a month ago to drive a parade lap for the Toronto Indy this past weekend. We had 10 cars total, 5 on Saturday, 5 on Sunday. One of our members mounted his gopro mounted, with his mic in the engine bay; this is the unedited video of our lap and preparation. We were kept behind the pace car on a pretty tight leash, but it was still really loving awesome to be out on a live race course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9sxyyWRbKw&feature=youtu.be I will post the edited version when I get it.

It's 19 per 100,000 people in Russia, 12 in the US. If you look per 100,000 vehicles Russia is at 55 and the US at 15. But, I think the US has much higher cars per capita, sadly wikipedia didn't have stats for car accidents per mile driven for Russia.

After watching these for an hour the main issues are new driver mistakes, namely driving too fast for conditions/available grip, failing to yield, overtaking unsafely, and a lot of not looking where you're going. Edit: There's also a lot of head marks on windshields from no seatbelts Das Volk fucked around with this message at 18:31 on Jul 15, 2013 |

The one that pops off and spiral-rockets all over the place @ 7:00 just when the cop parks by the fire and the bystanders start walking forward gets me every time. e: the first time I saw video #1 I'll admit it, I cracked up when the song playing had the lyrics "I wanna scream, and shout, and let it all out" not 5 seconds after the truck crashed and exploded. Then the same lyrics come up again only a few seconds before the next round of explosions. Terrible song, great timing. kastein fucked around with this message at 05:38 on Jul 17, 2013 |
