That is strange. The only time I've had that happen is if it's trying to access something Plex has no metadata for (i.e. home-created movies, porn, etc.)

In that case I just hit Play instead of select and it goes past the metadata-displaying phase and works. Might not be the same issue since you said it happened just launching trailers, but..

Also make sure you run the python script with sudo or it won't bind to the port right.

(Yes, I've had all these happen to me. :D)

Sorry, guy.
Just a couple points, to clarify:

1) I do use Sudo because I'm still kind of a Terminal noob, so I copy and paste from the install guide. ;)

2) It says "Accessing Trailers" with the spinny thing after clicking Trailers on the main dashboard of ATV. So it's not likely a metadata/single file thing. It's not even "connecting" to Plex at all.

That said, this time, full-restarting (not sleep now) my ATV3 helped. But it's happened before and affected Netflix and HBOGO and Hulu, so it made me wonder if the port was an issue or it lost connection since I'm routing all that network traffic through my mac, right?

Gotcha. Do you run anything like LitleSnitch or anything firewall related on your Mac? That could be interfering with ports opening closing.

Is the terminal window show any output that might be helpful here? I know when mine gets a DNS request it outputs all of that to the terminal window.

I use a detach command so that Terminal doesn't have to remain open. I'll leave it open next time to see what happens... :)

You'll know this is happening if the receiver indicates its outputting pro logic, rather than Dolby digital/DTS

I looked it up and my plasma is outputting dolby digital not pro logic. It was Samsung's top of the line in 2010.

You might also try starting a screen session and running it there, and then closing the terminal. It'll continue running in the background under the emulated screen console. Just run "screen" and then start PlexConnect like normal, and then you can close terminal. Sometimes scripts freak out if the standard output (in this case your terminal window) disappears on them.

Run "screen -r" in a new terminal window to re-attach to your screen session if you need to check PlexConnect. Ctrl+A followed by ? will show you the command help screen.

Like I said above, I'm a bit of a Terminal greenhorn. That said, I think I *am* running in Screen, as that's the only way I ever use Ctrl-A, Ctrl-D.

cd /applications/<Plexconnectfolderdirectory>
screen
sudo <blah blah>

Ctrl A, Ctrl D

Does anyone know if I can get both PlexConnect and this service: http://unblock-us.com working on my ATV3? Both use a custom DNS I think. I'd give it a shot but I have an uncanny ability to break this thing when I tinker with it.

ssspy007

I did exactly that and it made my Apple TV super slow but it worked. On the Apple TV you set the DNS to be your computer's ip address that is running Plexconnect. On your computer running Plexconnect you set the DNS to be unblock us.

The trailers app stays on your computer to get your Plex content and everything else is forwarded to unblock us.

vvvv Does it work ok for you? I went back to just using Plex on my phone to send to my AppleTV, since it would take forever for Netflix to load going through Plexconnect and unblockus.vvvvv

That is what I did also. Paying $99 for an ATV which turned out to be a Canadian Netflix box was regretful, but now with the PlexConnect tweak and that unblock site I've just been gorging myself on TV.

I am moving into a new home and am connecting all of my devices (directv box, video game system, etc.) in a media closet, out of site. Unfortunately, the Apple TV doesn't appear to have an easy method of controlling it like the others. I tried to use the remote app on my ipad, and it works, but I really don't want to bring out the ipad every time I want to watch my apple tv.

It's a jailbroken apple tv 2. I'd like an option to control it through my Galaxy S4 or through my Directv remote like I currently have it set up on, but neither of those appear to be a viable option without the apple tv box in a line of site.

Are there any decent options for setting this up and making it work?

Logitech Harmony Smart Control is what I use at home. (With an iPhone. :D But they have an Android app I think) It uses wifi, and a massive cancer-inducing IR blaster.

I actually do have an old ipod touch around the house somewhere. I'm going to look for that and see if I can set it up.

Edit: Well, that didn't work. Apparently my ipod touch doesn't support ios 5. Even though there was a remote app for previous ios versions, the app no longer supports 4.2.1. Sigh...reasons like this is why I choose to not have an iphone.

How is this different from any device that gets regular hardware and OS updates? Do you get mad when you can't upgrade your old PC to windows vista and TurboTax doesn't sell a windows 95 compatible version of their software anymore? I hope you didn't convert to Android and then go complain about OS version and app support for older devices, because that would be laughable.

Buy the phone you want and be happy with it, but that argument is ridiculous.

To contribute, I also have a Logitech Harmony smart remote and love it. It's an older model because I've had it for several years (550 I Think?) but it works great with all my devices, including my Apple TV. My only complaint is that you have to log in to the software used to program your remote, which seems dumb. I have to use "forgot my password" every time I log in because it grabs data off my phone, never tells me my forgotten password, and doesn't offer to reset it.

Smart Remote, yes, Smart computer side software, no.

You're complaining that an ipod from 2008 or older doesn't get software that came out in 2011? iOS 5 is installable on 3rd gen and newer iPods touch.

Buy a $19 remote and don't have the Apple TV hidden so it has line of sight, or stop complaining cuz you are a whiner. Get the Android equivalent judging by how much you hate Apple.

No, I'm complaining that I can't install an old version of the app that would work on my device (it did exist, from looking around online) . I can do that on an Android device, so that's the reason for my frustration.

I don't hate Apple either. I love my Apple TV and my ipad, I was just looking for an option to control it without a line of site view.

It is just frustrating to know that there is an app that offers this option on a device that I have, but I can't use it because apple won't allow you to load an older version of the app.

Considering you're using another device to control the Apple TV anyways, why not just buy the ~~~remote~~~ and use that?

The ATV is small and inconspicuous enough to have out instead of hidden away too.

My TV is mounted and I am hiding all cords. Having a power cord running to near the ground along with an HDMI cord running to the tv is not something I want to have, so I was looking for other options. The ATV itself isn't bad, but I have a child that is learning to walk, so the less cords I have around for her to grab at, the better.

I'm going with the remote that was mentioned earlier in this thread with the IR blaster. I wish I didn't have to buy a $120 device to control my $99 Apple TV, but it is what it is. I love the Apple TV so it's worth the extra investment, and I'm sure I'll find a good use for the remote for other things.

As you've already got cords going from the tv, why not just attach the Apple TV to the back of your mounted TV, and then zip tie the power cables together? There's no real difference between two tied together cables and one...

The remote option should fix that though..

It works really great for twitch, the app streams the video to your TV and shows the chat on your phone. It's pretty cool. The picture doesn't fit perfectly on my screen though and I haven't figured out if this is an ATV thing or a setting on my TV. Streaming regular video and Netflix looks fine though.
