Canvas 2 is about as mediocre as VN writing gets without being a nukige, really.

Suleman posted:Grisaia seems to be getting a good reception. However, I figured jumping straight into another huge visual novel after Clannad might be a bit too much, so I decided to read something shorter and really generic in between. I randomly picked Canvas 2, and I'm regretting it already, less than 30 minutes in. Mostly because the teacher-student setup is creepy as all hell, and because the mouthflaps in the CGs are slightly off-putting. Elis is pretty much the worst character and after playing that game I decided it would be pretty cool if I never had to hear the word "oniichan" again. I don't think there's anything worthwhile in that game.

Welp, Michiru done. Gotta say, I was thinking "this is less crazy than advertised", up until I got to the very ending. Still, it was a little better than Yumiko's. The burial sequence was really well done.

Oh wow, Grisaia is awesome. I'm 30 minutes into the game and I can't stop laughing at some of the lines. There wasn't any homework assigned today...Which would mean my hypothesis just now can't be accurate. When students shut themselves in their room, homework and masturbation are the only things that come to mind...

I think Deus Machina Demonbane is the only VN I've played with a beach episode in it. I didn't expect that one coming, not before I started playing and not after I saw what sort of a game this really was. So far, I really think this game would be better without the cthulhu-mythos and seriousness, or the wacky hijinks. I can't really take the less comedic parts seriously when nobody has died halfway(?) in, all collateral damage is purely structural (the main character even handwaves this) and the grimoires. Oh, and the gratuious amount of fanservice. Then again, the serious parts undermine the comedy for me. At least the mad scientist is great. Maybe things just get serious later on and comedy takes a backseat when that happens? e: Actually I remembered they go to the beach in Muv-Luv Unlimited too. Huh. I suppose it's more of a beach scene than an episode though. Ottumon fucked around with this message at 02:29 on Jul 30, 2013 |

In Grisaia is it a lost in translation thing with why the MC always calls Amane the "Large Woman"? She doesn't seem particularly tall or large in any real respect from the CGs and sprites of her so far.

She's supposed to be unusually tall for a woman and has more meat on her bones than the others

Sachi is dropping constant s right now. Poor Michiru. Grisaia has the best characters. Edit; "Uhm, is there more to this story about your pillow-raping friend?" "Wasn't rape. He had the pillow's consent." This is the most hilarious thing I've read in a long while. Cynic Jester fucked around with this message at 14:43 on Jul 30, 2013 |

No reason at all, really. Especially if you're used to newer VNs, Tsukihime is pretty dated nowadays.

No. They take place in the same universe but have no real connection between them, and Tsukihime isn't as good anyway. Oddly, Tsukihime is moderately important to Fate/Extra, but Fate/Extra isn't as good either.

I personally disagree, I liked Tsukihime more than Fate. They are similar works, but Tsukihime is less pretty and where Fate has shounen action scenes, Tsukihime is a bit more like a psychological thriller at times.

One reason to play Tsukihime first is that it's a good VN, and if you play FSN (with its really high production values) first then the relatively cheaptastic art of Tsukihime would be difficult to stand in comparison.

Finished Sachi's route in Grisaia, probably the best one so far. The ending reminded me strongly of Kotomi's, from Clannad, save that it was much better done. Didn't rely as much on wild coincidence. The route overall was a lot stronger than Yumiko and Michuru's since the other girls were more involved. In those routes, the humor dropped off sharply because the girls aren't nearly as funny when they can't play off of each other.

Also, it's not so much inconsistency but the fact that he carries much more "real world" complexity with him in his motivations and actions. Most characters will generally fit a role or number of roles (the friend, the magus, the sibling, etc) and act accordingly, but Shiki is just a "some dude" with no overarching goals or a code he adherest to or strong driving motivations besides living his life. Hey, weren't you the one that was complaining about Rin acting out of character in Heavens Feel?

BTW, everybody's heights (along with other stats) are listed in the OP. Yumiko - 5'4" Michiru - 5'1" Makina - 4'8¾" Sachi - 4'11½" Amane - 5'6½" Yuuji - 5'10" Chizuru - 5'1¾" JB - 5'7¾"

Nephilm posted:Kill Akiha and not go insane from guilt. He's pretty inconsistent. In the Kohaku route, he shows signs of actual moral principles that he never showed anywhere else (contrast with Ciel Good in particular). He talks about how he lives in the moment, but his main hobbies are sleeping and watching something generic on TV. He figures out a few things that, as Seorin points out, basically rely on having knowledge from other routes/endings. The rest of the time, he's an idiot. He cares so much about his dear little sister that he hasn't communicated with her in a decade. He's more afraid of death than other people, except when he's less afraid of death than other people. That's just off the top of my head. A lot of this can be explained by a whole bunch of influences (Ciel's Mystic Eyes of Whisper, Makihisa's hypnotism, Kohaku's drugs, his connection with SHIKI, Nanaya Inversion Impulse, and the strain from using the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception) messing with his brain, but that makes him very unlike a "real world" person. Oh my god, the flowchart system in VLR! It's a thing of beauty. It's crazy to imagine all the time you'd save if it were implemented in other VNs.

# ? Jul 31, 2013 13:17 |

Then again, considering the complexity of the various routes and the fact that you have to revisit every route after exploring other routes, it would have been neigh impossible without that flowchart. But I agree that really should be a staple of VNs.

# ? Jul 31, 2013 14:13 |

I think you'd basically wind up with YU-NO if you ditched VLR's flowchart. Meaning you'd only be able to go back to certain parts (and even then only if you used an orb to "save" that spot). It was a game that required you going into routes to encounter dead ends which you would revisit later with different items or knowledge gained from other routes. It was exactly as frustrating as you'd expect when you don't have the ability to zip around to any section you want.
|
# ? Jul 31, 2013 14:23 |

Frustrating would be the perfect word. After seeing VLR, I'm surprised that VNs don't autosave at decision points and don't have convenient flowcharts showing at least where you've been. They seem like relatively simple additions that would greatly improve most VNs.

Finished Takeuchi's route in Canvas 2. The VN is pretty bland, but it could be worse. It's not terrible on a technical level, and aside from the basic creepiness of the premise and the porn, as usual, it's mostly just been rather boring. Takeuchi's and Hiroki's dialogue is actually pretty funny at times. The last part of her route was really rushed, though. Regarding Kiri: What the hell, the possibility of an actual, almost normal romantic relationship between two adults? It's so reasonable it's sort of creeping me out. Regarding Elis: Hahaha, holy poo poo. Her menstruation freaks her out to the point of depression because it reminds her of her parents' brutal death. Harsh! I'm not even kidding.

Still on the common route in Grisia but I'm starting to warm up to it a bit, the first few scenes had some funny moments but were kinda "eh" but things are finally starting to hit their stride. If there's one flaw though, it's lack of a voiced MC. Yuuji's lines are great, but would be even better if he had a voice behind it. This applies to Majikoi as well in my opinion. If you're going to give your MC a personality in a VN give him a VA goddamn it!!
