So an animal may go on your face? And? A huntsmen is not going to lay eggs up your nose or anything. Is this a general reaction to things on your face? Because I'm just at this.

I grew up outside of the city on a property that was surrounded by bushland. It was absolutely crawling with snakes and spiders. I never once got bitten by anything, even though I spent most of my childhood running around barefoot or climbing trees. In fact the only time I can remember anyone else getting bitten was when some idiot kid down the road from me caught a wolf spider in a jar, then poked at it with his finger. Unless you go provoking them, or you intend to go picking up logs and rocks and poo poo without checking under them first, you're not going to be bitten by a spider. If you are seriously freaking out over just seeing a spider here well you've got two choices, either harden the gently caress up or don't come!

There are ants that bite you as well, even in the city. That might be the case elsewhere in the world though.

ShadyNasty posted:2 - What are the 'dependent' visas like? I'm British, and I'd be moving to Australia for 4 years (most likely). My girlfriend is Venezuelan but has Spanish citizenship also. She speaks fluent English and is an accountant with an MBA. If I came, obviously it would be great if she could come too. Do we have to be married (which, yeah, you know) for her to get a visa (based on my student visa, as opposed to getting her own work visa) or...? I've only applied for a partner visa for the 457, but if student visas are similar, your girlfriend should be able to apply together with you as a "de facto spouse". For this you'd need to prove that you've lived together for 6-12 months (depending on visa type) and submit other pieces of evidence that you're "like a married couple in all aspects but the marriage certificate" (shared finances/responsibilities, statutory declarations from family/friends etc.). If accepted, the partner should then have unrestricted working rights (finding an employer that understands this is another matter...).

That's a big list for Melbourne given the short numbers of days you're going to be there, besides the fact that you won't be able to do much on at least three of them (Boxing Day, NYE/NYD).

If you like to party you'll like Surfer's Paradise. It's very touristy, very night-clubby, but the beach is also pretty awesome if you just want to swim. The beach is also so big that it's never actually really full, ever.

Honeymoon is basically set in terms of cities\time tables (Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns). Are there any professional sports going on in November? I cannot get enough aussie football, and would love to see a match, but it looks like the league ends in September? Rugby would an acceptable replacement.

The Gold Coast is good in general for surfing. http://www.mygc.com.au/ Cairns is good for going to Daintree and Kuranda. Has mud for a beach though. You might want to go to Fraser Island if you have the chance. http://www.fraserisland.net/

Hey man just chipping in with sadly they are over by that time, but be careful if you are looking for like amateur league, it's not like the states where some college team will have a huge game, once you go below the AFL/NRL they are small time. LIke someone else said, try to catch a 20/20 game!

You can do a half day or full day tour of the forest if you like. There's a pretty nice bird sanctuary up near Port Douglas. The reef trips are 1 day and the various boats go to various reef locations, so depending on how many days you want to go out, that's basically how many days you can spend out there.
|
# ? Aug 4, 2013 23:29 |
Yeah, I'd say spend 3-4 days in Cairns. Do Kuranda one day, the Daintree one day, and you have either one or two days to do reef tours.

A lot of these tours seem to start early morning. Any suggestions? We aren't looking to lounge on the beach since we are coming from the beach.

Go on a boat that takes you to the outer reef, not a coral cay, it will be INFINITELY better. The only downside is that you can't do that and Kuranda on the same day since the boat trip (an hour and a half each way more or less) is way too long to get to the outer reef.

I honestly think you'd be way better off doing Kuranda one day and the outer reef another than trying to fit them both in one day. They're both full-day things, and I would honestly suggest picking one or the other rather than doing both of them halfway if it comes down to that decision. If you do end up deciding to choose between the two I'd say do the outer reef in a heartbeat. I've never seen anything like it before in my life.

If it comes down to doing Kuranda or the reef. Go do the reef. Jungle on mountains can't really beat it. Wool Shed at Cairns has dancing on the tables and its where the backpackers and some of the locals go.

Ha, unemployed again and stuck in a rut. Do I stay in Melbourne and continue throwing my resumes into a black hole or do I suck it up and take my savings up the east coast (and...throw them in a black hole up there)? (I know if I can hang on until Christmas temp jobs start kicking in I'll probably be alright but it's only August. You'd think a decade of retail experience would count for something but no-one's interested.) Bah, I love Melbourne and don't want to leave but I can't just sit on my arse for a year and go home having seen nothing of the rest of the country. On the plus side, even though it finishes tomorrow, my stint as a steward at the film festival has possibly been the most fun I have ever had at a job in my life, and even though it was unpaid I'd gladly keep doing it on the side if that were possible. I've managed to see 17 free films so far (and ushered Hugo Weaving afjsgdnhf), so at least I've had some escapism!

Its better to go on the discover yourself with goon at a beach party on Byron after you've got more than half of the work visa done so you don't have to stress. I have some friends here in the city (just people I've met at the hostel) so obviously staying here is more appealing than going elsewhere and starting yet again, but I'm so, so, so fed up of everything and I'm coming up with nothing in regards to employment. In the last five months I've earned $700, and my rent in the last five weeks has been $1200. I don't want to go home but I have a return ticket and I wouldn't have to pay rent which is honestly so appealing right now, haha. I think I'm the only person here who's still looking for work. I'm coming up with a million vacancies for waitstaff and bartenders but I have no experience (and no way to get it and so on) and I know everyone is like 'just lie' but going on a trial shift and sucking absolute rear end because I just fall apart under pressure like that with no experience to back it up isn't really the best way to convince someone to pay me to do poo poo. Argh. I'm in a really lovely, excuse-making mood today, sorry Thanks for that link but I'm really not in a position to drop $250 on a course at the moment Omgz posted:That's a bummer, tough choice to make. I'm at the stage where I'm just so bummed out I can't be arsed looking for stuff any more which I know is counter-productive but it's just soul-destroying. I keep getting invited to nights out at the hostel bar etc (I did go to a couple, and ha, I actually totally OWNED someone at a game of pool so I guess the long-game really does pay off!) but I just can't afford to be social at the moment because I have no money. People offer to buy me drinks but I can't keep freeloading, I feel so guilty. I'm also dreading going back to the UK eventually because the job market is a loving joke over there. At least I don't have to worry about paying for the flight home as I had the forethought to book a return to start with, but I need to see everything here first and go to New Zealand because while I know I can come back it won't be for a couple of years probably when I'll have saved up again. That turned into a bit of a vent, sorry, but god aaaaaghhhh! I'm so frustrated

Yeah I know how that goes, have you tried any of the call center places? I interviewed for one and it seemed like if you had any sales knowledge you'd do fine(which I am in fact terrible at). I just had an interview today and another tomorrow but yeah no job yet so still plugging away. I totally understand the not wanting to go out and mooch but also torn because you're not being able to see anything/do anything etc. And I was also basically in the same situation a week or two ago when my return ticket was scheduled back the US and I was super depressed about job stuff. Honestly though when essentially the other option is failure, all you can do is continue to better your cover letter/resume and keep applying to places. I went to an interview last week and realized what a bad attitude I had gotten from the months of trying, how it wasn't going to help me at all, and how I could be a bit more positive that each of these experiences was an opportunity to learn, improve, and help me get to where I want to be. I know that sounds lame but it was a bit of a revelation for me, also if you'd like someone else to give your resume/cover letter a look over and offer suggestions feel free to send it over. I'm not even sure how many times the girlfriend and I have written/rewritten mine, we also finally gave in and signed up for that goon resume writer last week(and of course right after we did that I got 4 calls from places offering interviews). The city is certainly competitive, I came over thinking I'd have an easy time of it with my experience and would get hired quickly. And while I know tons of people who have pretty much done just that, there are tons of people looking as well so don't be too bummed.

Thanks for the advice man, I know it sounds stupid but it does help remembering that others are in the same boat as me (though it'd be better if none of us were at all!) but yeah, hella depressed lately about everything, it's really upsetting having to consider giving up on this wild dream of mine and just going on a holiday for like, six weeks or so then going home. There is nothing more depressing than the UK in winter as well, so missing out on an Aussie summer is really a huge, huge bummer if it comes to that. It's so frustrating knowing that my attitude will do a complete 180 the minute I get work but right now it's hard to see past my dwindling bank account. I've not looked at call centres yet because even though my background is in retail sales I feel I would be pretty poo poo at it but I'm certainly not ruling it out. I've been brushing up my CV over the past few days so if you don't mind I'll send it off to you at some point? I'll warn you know I highly suspect it's absolute rubbish so please just tear it apart. What I worry about is that even if I get it written as well as it possibly could be, my work history just isn't the sort of thing that's going to get me anything on this visa. First world problems, eh? I am trying to keep at it though and stay positive; I've handed out some CVs today and am in the middle of the application process for McDonalds. I've applied for work at the Fringe next month as well which, although unpaid, promises the bar experience and training I desperately need, plus it's further experience in something I want to think about career-wise (events management type stuff) so I'm eager to do it as well as hopefully a paid job. Here's hoping you get something soon too, dude!

In QLD council does free things for jobseekers (don't have to be Aussie, just rock up) like cv writing and has local jobs stuff like three days in a week helping man with a van stuff. You might want to rock up to your library, local council building and read their notices and see if Victoria does anything similiar. Failing that you're going to want to start hitting up the temp agencies. I loving HATE DATA ENTRY but it's generally always there and $700 ish after tax for a 38hr week.
