It really is amazing how naturally the Stig glommed onto the concept of having an extra set of wheels and weight connected to the back end of the car.

Not really, they drive like that all the time on his home planet. It's a handicap to make them faster when it's removed, like the water cup in Initial D.

Top Gear would ruin what makes Harris great, and dilute him down to lowest common denominator light entertainment. To elaborate, Top Gear isn't a car programme these days, it's an entertainment programme which happens to feature cars. Once you accept that, it becomes a lot easier to understand.

When it wasnt busy spraying gas onto the exhaust manifold and exploding, the front mounted gas tank would become lighter as it got empty lifting the front to a point where steering turned into a mere suggestion rather than a command. I also kind of got mad at James for not going into the crazy detail that the Singer has to offer and explaining why it cost so much aside from the man hours. Such as every little fitting and linkage plug and wire was completely professional race grade. Besides, a $30k wiring harness isn't going to be $30k in parts, it's going to cost that much because you have to pay an engineer to design it and a professional builder/installer to manually assemble it.

If you want to watch 20 minutes about why Singers are so cool, you're not Top Gear's target audience. Luckily for you, there's Chris Harris on Drive and he did just that in January. It's even been linked in this thread already. Top Gear is light entertainment that features cars. If you want car nerdery, you have to accept you need to go look somewhere else.

I'm going to let you into a little secret: Caravans have brakes. They work with a linkage to a part of the towbar that compresses under braking loads. (The black bit just ahead of the A-frame)

sincx posted:I think both the caravan losing its wheel and the caravan tipping over are staged. He was braking for the corner, you can see the brakes on the caravan lock as he slows to make the turn. Also the wheel gets loose after the first couple corners because what they're doing is so far outside the boundary of what a caravan and its wheels have to go through that it just gets completely hosed right away.

Starting with a knackered unmaintained £500 caravan wouldn't help either.

They also staged the j-turn because the Tiguan couldn't do it with the DSG and stability control. And they staged the first hovervan because it couldn't hover and they staged the 2nd hovervan because it had the drivetrain removed and couldn't drive out of the water on it's own. Also they staged that pass on the Bolivian death road and they staged James' airship disaster and--

They cut the trip short right at the final switchback, and carefully angled the camera back downhill. It was still badass though, and I don't doubt they were in real distress. E: Wait, I was thinking of the wrong "pass". You meant the narrow overtake on the crumbling road in the rain, where Clarkson was coming back downhill for some reason and the vehicle he was passing was a Lexus SUV you'd never in a million years see a local there driving. It's a nice antidote to the downer emotional-blackmail showpieces they've gotten into the habit of doing in the last few seasons (the one where they took classic British roadsters to their old abandoned factories, the funereal and nearly wordless Aston Martin V12 Vantage review, etc). It's in the same chest-puffing vein as the tribute to the E-Type on Beachy Head, but less tongue-in-cheek. Good to see they've got it in 'em to be both sincere and upbeat.

I liked the segment even though they were a bit fast and loose with what is homegrown and what isn't, but what I think is truly special about Britain is not what they do with their hands, but that they give a drat about cars. Being a source of talent and homebase for so many racing teams says a lot, as does the fact that even though the money isn't necessarily coming from inside the country, they still have a lot of talented designers putting out unique product. I would disagree with Clarkson and say that Britain is largely a bank, and that the car industry is no longer master of its own destiny, but it doesn't matter. This is the society that figured out the sports car and has cultivated some of the most original brands of the past 100 years. Ownership doesn't matter, assembly doesn't matter - influence and identity matter, and Britain still has significant amounts of both in design and motorsport.
