Someone explain to me why the DBZ game is so bad. I remember playing one of those SNES fighting games back in the day and it seemed alright but I was probably just jazzed to play a DBZ game at all.

Ugh, I know. Back when I was in high school (many years ago) I learned to leave fast if I saw people posting F5 threads. That said, /vr/ is a totally different environment.

I think it's great that VR-GCCX and SAGCCX are gonna work together to release episodes, especially since VR-GCCX's work seems to be about the same quality as SAGCCX (I can't tell how well it's translated since I barely know Japanese, but I'm sure it's about the same). :)

Well, I think were mainly just making sure we don't do projects that the other group is already working on. Glad to hear that you think our releases stack up against SA's!

The mods are much more watchful about stuff like that now. /vr/, /v/ and /b/ are are relatively different entities much like how GBS is different from Games or FYAD. I honestly don't know a lot about how different /vr/ is from /v/ though.

In short:

*Controls are just plain bad in general. Your characters control like bricks, jump physics are extremely floaty, and the game is awful at recognizing button input for special moves.
*The different-leveled arenas were a bad idea in general, and the way the split screen wraps around when character dash under each other is hideously annoying.
*Many special moves running off a power meter that's charged up by blocking attacks is bad enough, but the super move system is just insane. They all work the same way - move a specific distance from the enemy, input the correct command for the move of your choice (most characters have two, they vary in how much damage they deal and how much of the power meter they eat), which will start a cutscene. The other player can now input a command for one of several counter moves, all similar for all characters, which will either reduce, completely prevent, or return the damage from the move. It should be evident how unfair this system is, especially when fighting the computer.
*The characters lack... identity as far as the gameplay is concerned. There are no real defining fighting styles, and characters tend to have very similar movesets.

I'm really hard pressed to think of worse fighting games than this. The sequels are better, but none of them are particularly good games, just the typical "these games will sell on their license, why put in effort" drek you usually get from games based on popular licenses. No one would've ever given these things a second look if not for that Dragonball Z logo.

There are at least three other DBZ fighting games on SNES and all of them are at least a little better than this specific one, so it might be that you just played one of the others, like Hyper Dimension.

Super Butoden 1 is just painful to even try to play. The characters are lethargic, the controls aren't responsive at all, and it doesn't even have a cool story mode like SB2 to make up for it. I bought this game in a book store for like 5 bucks and I still regret it. :(

If it helps, I kinda wish that I had. I got a chance to play it for a little bit and it was a lot more fun than the other DBZ fighters I'd tried.

Edit: on a semi-related note, Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Super Saiyan for SNES is actually kinda fun in a bizarre and hilarious way. I don't know what it is about the game, but something in it just kinda captures a part of the show that a lot of games don't. I think it might be the grinding for Battle Power. :v:

I guess that's kinda why I see Disgaea's post-game as Dragon Ball Z: the SRPG. You just look for increasingly absurd ways to make your character's battle numbers get higher until you're hitting people for millions of damage.

While I do like the franchise, and Super Dragoball Z is indeed "good-but-not-great" (making it about a million times better than every other Dragonball game... this franchse has not been lucky with its video game adaptations)... despite living in Europe, I only own an American-model PS2, and have no intention of buying a Dragonball-themed game that only comes with the voice "talent" from that disgustingly horrible American dub of the cartoon.

Call it petty, but that production was never Dragonball, no matter how many Americans are confusing nostalgic affection for actual quality.

It's the best Dragonball RPG, making it merely "pretty bad" rather than having you wonder whether the developers were making a game or a torture instrument.

If you want to be as legitimate as is possible with imports, you could buy the Japanese version, throw the Independence exploit on your PS2 memory card somehow, and either use Swap Magic to play the Japanese copy or rip it to an HDD and play it with HDLoader.

Edit: Or just put your legitimate Japanese copy into your computer and play it with an emulator. I guess that would be a lot easier. :v:

Super DBZ was pretty fun, I'll admit. It helps that some of the Street Fighter creators worked on it, IIRC.

Yeah, I guess. Too many hoops to jump through just to play a Dragonball game that's stands out just because it's NOT ungodly lovely, though. Maybe if I assemble a stck of other Japan-only PS2 games that are actually worth paying.

(I really dislike playing games on computers in general, so I don't feel much like emulating)

4chan in 2013 is different from years past, and while /vr/ seems to have some trolls and trouble makers (where doesn't?), for the most part, it's a pretty nice community. Our GCCX threads often see people apologize and forgive, and random Anons do most of our script checks, and in that process, I've witnessed some of the most civil conversation I've ever seen on the internet.

Man, he looks so young. Hard to believe he's 37 years old.

I told the show that I already bought the CD, but they insist on sending me a free copy anyway because they're nice like that. I hope I get a different trading card! I finally listened to it today and it's awesome. I was mildly disappointed that the Quest of Ki track wasn't the same music looped for five minutes straight.

Quick and dirty translation of this article before I go on vacation (sorry for awkward wording):

---------------
As previously announced, the variety program "Game Center CX" starring Arino of Yoiko will become a theatrical film called "Game Center CX The Movie." Filming recently began, and on July 22nd, a press conference was held on location in Tokyo.

The show is currently in its tenth year, and to commemorate, the "10th Anniversary Project" was announced. Various events will be held, such as a Budokan live, and the grand finale will be the film version of the show. It will be released nation-wide early 2014 in the spring.

The story is set in 1986. It stars Daisuke (Hajime Yoshii) -- a boy who loves games -- and Kumiko (Yuna Taira), his classmate and crush. Same as the show, Arino himself will star as Chief Arino. However, it remains unclear how this story will ultimately cross paths with the show.

The press conference was headed by Arino, the film's director Masatoshi Kurakata, and the show's producer Kan. Arino made a promise in regards to the film's attendance: if it gets over 200 thousand viewers, a "fan appreciation takoyaki party" will be held; at 500 thousand, a "fan appreciation cruise"; and at 800 thousand, a "challenge filmed in Las Vegas." A takoyaki party will happen in any of these cases.

Producer Kan, who proposed the idea of a film version, said "playing Famicom at a friend's place, with Jump magazine and Fanta pop... I've asked the director to convey that 80's feel." Director Kurakata stated it will be a "fusion of documentary and drama. I believe it will be the kind of film you don't see often."

Producer Kan said the keyword that represents the film is "karipaku." Karipaku is the act of borrowing something without returning it. Arino quipped "my partner Hamaguchi did that to me once," the kind of anecdote one would expect from a comedy duo.
