One of the coolest parts of Earthbound is that it's designed to be playable with one hand. The L button can be used to select, talk, and check, and Select can be used to cancel an input. If you want to open the menu to heal or rearrange your stuff outside of battle, though, you do have to stretch over to the A button. I thought it was a nifty feature.
Can't you open the menu with Select to call up the HP-bar screen and then L?

I came across mention of a Gnostic codex called The Unreal God and the Aspects of His Nonexistent Universe, an idea which reduced me to helpless laughter. What kind of person would write about something that he knows doesn't exist, and how can something that doesn't exist have aspects?
Threed is fantastic. For me, there is not a better gaming moment than wandering into a dark alley at night, taking the time to appreciate a random poop joke on a sign, then purchasing a handful of explosives from a back alley dealer who is just chilling out near the circus, wearing sunshades at night, and selling weapons to children.

UnderTale, from what I've played of the demo, seems really derivative from Earthbound. It's a really unique RPG nonetheless!

Also, while we're posting Earthbound music arrangements, here are a few of my personal favourites:

Yes. There is no need at all to use ABXY. You can access the menu by pressing Select, then L.

This is pretty cool. I don't know how long the battle system will last unless it starts getting more complex than using one talky option over and over.

I missed out on Earthbound when I was younger, mostly because the ads made it look like a gross-out game that I would never have dared to ask my parents for. If anybody has thought about whether your first time through Earthbound can still inspire a sense of adventure and wonder even in an adult, my answer is a resounding yes. I am very much regretting never experiencing it all sooner.

As for similar media, the first few hours gave me heavy Pete and Pete vibes.

I'm pretty sure it's kosher to ask this: what's the best way to play Mother 3 on a PC? I tried it once on the Wii a few years ago but it was too hard to use the combo system because of audio sync issues.

This thread... if I still had my SNES and EB cart I'd have dug them out by now.

Bound Together wasn't a fantastic album, but Virt wrote Get On the Bus, so it's pretty goddamn good. (He's written multiple videogame soundtracks and probably over a hundred excellent covers.)

That's one way to get ahead in life, but nothing beats an axe to the face.
I replayed both Earthbound and Mother 3, and I find Earthbound just more fun to play overall.

I'm okay at using sound combos but Mother 3 suffers from 2 characters with practically no skillset. Earthbound had 3 characters with PSI abilities and one character who got more and more (if some are completely useless) gadgets to play around with. I'd be okay with Boney having no abilities if his non-speed stats weren't so low. Duster gets 6 abilites at the beginning and no new ones, later of them getting outclassed by PSI because his are woefully inaccurate. About the only unique thing he does is blind enemies.

I know the battle system isn't what the series is known for but I think for a 2006 game it could have been more interesting. The overall charm of the game keeps drawing me back despite my complete disdain for first person view battles.

That was me for the longest time, but in Fourside. And me in Chrono Trigger with that big robot boss. I wasn't very good at video games as a kid. :downs:

Still, it felt like there was so much to do in Earthbound, even in those first five hours. So many people to see and talk to, and the towns felt like actual towns, and every NPC was a joy to encounter. If I ever end up with a Wii U, I'll be getting this.

This thread has inspired me to restart a project I thought I had abandoned almost three years ago!

As for similar media, the first thing that always comes to my mind is Haruki Murakami's novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. It's nothing like Earthbound, on the surface, but I feel like they're somehow cut from the same cloth. The author and Shigesato Itoi are apparently good friends in real life and they even wrote a book of short stories together, so the similarities- though hard to describe- make sense. I read the book before I played the game and they had the same effect on me, even before I found out the two creators knew each other.

It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect a Mother 3 guide to be if they went the same route as Earthbound and released a guide with it. There's a ton of talent in the EB community, plus for $20 you really can't go wrong.
