I thought I would be reading Horus Heresy novels until they ran out of poo poo to write about, but I've reached the breaking point three shorts into Mark of Calth. It didn't help that it started with the world's most generic bolter porn. Now I'm skipping whole pages in disinterest. Stupid ADB ruining my brainless books, spoiling it with his stupid, great writing.

The Black Library should really pit a major battle of Dan Abbot on the Imperium side with ADB writing the Chaos side of the battle. A collaboration story between those two would be amazing.

On another note, I have just finished Seventh Retribution by Ben Counter, new publication released last month featuring Lysander and the Imp Fists. Interested in what someone else who has read it thinks of it before I weigh in.

Yes it is pretty lovely, and not in a lovely but enjoyable way like his Soul Drinker books, I just found it very boring and generic with nothing really happening, lots of broken canon and a stupid plot line. He doesn't even write the action scenes well. Spoiler in case someone is going to read it: He creates a new Assassin temple (think Callidus or Eversor or Vindicare etc) which is an assassin that can create new biomass on the fly and make new things grow out of her. Somehow this assassin is able to call upon multiple chaos champions and control them utterly until you have a Khornate World Eater kneeling in front of her (and he isn't even very angry) ready to do her bidding. It is never really explained how she manages to do this apart from 'assassinorium sekretz'. Most of the marines who die are killed by things which would never really inconvenience them in canon, like a blade in the stomach or a pointy branch through the neck or caught in a landslide. The fates of several of the marines whose pov you get in the book are just completely ignored at the end which has Lysander seemingly abandoning one of his brothers who had just crashed inside a Thunderhawk, never finding out his fate. One of the main characters in the book who actually has chapters written just for him. Forgotten as Lysander walks off into the sunset. gently caress you, Ben Counter

What the poo poo? That is from the same guy who wrote the most decent novella in Architect of Fate? (which is telling about the book's overall quality) I liked Ben Counter's story most because it was the most coherent and didn't make me roll my eyes with the inscrutable nature of Fateweaver's plans and just did straight-up bolter porn.

I finished reading Titanicus recently. I felt like it didn't pick up until midway but Abnett seemed to have fun with the Mechanis world building. The internal intrigue in the Forge was probably my favorite part. As always with Abnett the ending was rushed but it was nice that things weren't completely resolved by the Titans themselves with the soldiers on the ground playing a key part. The subplot with the one soldier's husband being an idiot seemed like it was tacked on as filler. I would have liked a little more time with the Mechanis representative and Imperial observer in its place to flesh out more of the lore.

It's a shame, because I had actually brought every one of the paperbacks up to Angel Exterminatus (even the bad ones, I'm typically obsessive) - but I've stopped because of the new larger formats and splitting the series into retarded audio books, ebooks, etc. Now I'm leaving the series because I feel like I'm being pushed out by GW's marketing and insistance on doing things this way. I have a shelf full of half a series that ends with a giant, glossy book that I wouldn't have brought had I realised it was a 'special release'. Just give me the books in nice, uniform paperbacks and I'll buy the lot. All of them. Even the lovely ones. I own 'The Primarchs' for gently caress's sake. Why won't you take my money? Why can't I waste my disposable income on pew pew space man stories?

That Chris wraight scars ebook is showing up as £18 for some of you? Shows as £1.50 for me  . Maybe I'm just being a luddite but I would have preferred for the HH series to remain all paperback, instead of throwing in exclusive audio books, and now exclusive ebooks. I read paperbacks on the way to and from work, but I'm not going to listen to some terrible voice acting or buy a kindle/ipad just so I can get my spacemans fix.edit: £22.00 for an audiobook of helsreach  edit: ohh, right yeah that makes sense. Jesus, guess they were worried people would pay the £18 in one go but £1.50 a week is a bargain

I could never get into the table top because it had gotten far too expensive by time I got around to 40K (I've got several Rubbermaid containers full of Magic:TCG cards I try not to think about already), and now the literature is becoming ridiculous and prohibitively expensive. I really liked the look of the HH paperbacks, and had a good collection going to display (God...). Now the end of my shelf is full of hardcovers, and then there is all this digital content...that's more expensive then the physical copies... What the hell GW.

For any aspiring writer, you do not want to give your readers that feeling after reading a trilogy of books you have written.
