just listened to the latest deep purple comeback album (fourth since '84, lol), i can't believe how good this thing is. it actually lives up to everything that people said about purpendicular and bananas which is more than i can say for those albums (not that they were especially bad, just underwhelming given the hype). there's a really awful late-'70s tony banks keyboard solo on "weirdistan" and "après vous" has a terrible "high-tech" bridge right out of 1998 but overall it's a blast. even the cheesy "thriller" wannabe is fun (though not in a way that i ever want to hear from these guys again). the album is just consistently good hard rock with loud guitars and twiddly organs and awesome solos all over the place. it's not "great" in the way that in rock and machine head are "great" but it's definitely worthwhile and it makes me glad that these guys are still around (except for jon lord, rip  ).
