Reminds me of a great moment in the "Blade Runner" documentary they did a few years ago, where they play outtakes from the narration and after a few seconds you hear Ford in the sound booth say, "This is just bizarre. I don't see how this is going to work, Ridley."

UGH I can't believe a character literally designed to be compatible with lonely shut-ins matches descriptions of an imagined archetype on the internet that is attractive to lonely shut-ins.

I'm not sure it's "a manic pixie dream girl," if anything it seems to suggest it's modeled after his mom. Which is going to be really weird. edit: you know, it's an overused, tired old concept for a story, and yet the trailer makes it feel interesting again by exploring new angles. The main character seems be so free with sharing his life with a computer, what's keeping him from being open with humans? Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 21:12 on Aug 8, 2013 |

Ishamael posted:Anyone who uses the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" should have their film opinions automatically ignored. There's a kernel of a legitimately problematic fictional archetype in the term, so I don't mind it being used in the general case. But by this point, "Commentaries on MPDGs that get labeled MPDGs by lazy readers" seem like they're more common than actual MPDGs. Granted, being a commentary on the trope isn't automatically a good thing: I recognize what Ruby Sparks was setting out to do and thought it did most of a good job with it, but I still ended up despising that movie for its denouement.

http://youtu.be/4uuItnYF4ZE Trailer for the new Clooney written/directed movie The Monuments Men. About the real life story of the US Army's Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives program during WWII which was charged with finding culturally significant works and keeping the Nazis from blowing them up. It has a hell of a cast with Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Bill Murray and Jean Dujardin.

That looks fantastic. A small note on the VFX. It's cool to see CGI having advanced so much that this relatively small movie seems to have a much more epic idea of the d-day landings in Saving Private Ryan.
