There was very little burning of dem in that video. I doubt this was Ky-Mani's original intent for his song. Though, probably in line with Skrillex's.

Neruz posted:Well sure, but if you want the game to not actually be loving terrible then you need to design a 'stalker' type AI which is actually quite tricky to do well. Slender's AI doesn't seem to be particularly sophisticated, which isn't surprising being that it was intended as a tech demo/way to play around with Unity. As far as I understand: - His chance of appearance increases with the number of pages you've collected - but he's just teleporting around you otherwise. - His distance to you decreases with the number of pages In other words, he randomly teleports around you, and it gets more frequent, harder to run from the father along you are in the game.

So maybe a Slender-type game could actually be fun with a "stalker-AI"? Not that I trust programming chops of anyone who is basically answering a "please design my game" ad.

PrinceRandom posted:So maybe a Slender-type game could actually be fun with a "stalker-AI"? Not that I trust programming chops of anyone who is basically answering a "please design my game" ad. The Clock Tower games (not 3) have done this for awhile. Games like Amnesia sort of do it (I've never played it very far, but it seems like it's one monster at a time for the most part). I think it really depends on the kind of game you're trying to make like are you navigating a maze-kind of environment, being chased/trying not to run into the stalker? Anyway, as far as I understand it, the basics aren't hard - it's pretty much a chase algorithm. You need "nodes" along the way so the chaser has some idea of how to get to you (as opposed to trying to walk in a straight-line and into a wall). Basically, there are little points all throughout the environment that tell the monsters how to get to you. (So in an L-shaped hallway, there needs to be something at the corner, so the monster knows to go there first in order to be able to round the bend. If it determines that it needs to go through the hallway to find you, of course.) As I understand it, this is also how helpful AI works, more or less - or did. So squadmates, NPCs you escort, etc. who are trying to follow you are basically doing the same type of deal as a stalker. Slender "works" because the environment's super open and he doesn't really move outside of the teleport. ...Take all this with a grain of salt. I read articles on game programming every now and again, but I haven't done a lot of it, so this is a bit out of my rear end (the nodes thing was something I'd read about Half Life 2, so maybe there's better systems out.)

Those define overall area where AI agent can walk, rather than strictly tying it to moving between preset nodes. Unity has them in pro version, not sure if Source does though.

Now I'm remembering that Slender Space game (played by Habermann) that tried to have a stalker slender-man, and all he ever did was get stuck in the level architecture, slowly amble after you and just annoyingly stand in the way of the exit; so you'd have to goad him like a dog to chase you. Maybe the Slender idea is better. I guess I like the idea of having to escape an enemy you can't fight against but it would have to have some way of alleviating the tedium. There is a reason that game design requires a team, and just being an "idea guy" is utterly useless. vvv: I was thinking of the "Indie" gaming trend in general. All sorts of idea guys wanna design for the OUYA, but surprisingly enough, designing a good game is hard, and a lot of "ideas" either aren't as original as you think or aren't actually good ideas.
