I don't wanna be friends
Bit of an odd question, but:

I'm going to EDC in a couple days, and I recently found out I can stay at a friend of a friend's timeshare nearby with them, the only problem being that they are already over capacity on their allotted parking spaces. Carpooling is not really an option. Are there by chance parking garages, hopefully with some sort of reasonable rates? Somewhere to keep a car for a few days?

Park at the airport?

Park at a strip hotel? It's free at pretty much all of them. NYNY has a huge garage, as does Mandalay Bay. The airport will cost you something like $15/day.
Obviously, anywhere you park and leave it for a few days comes with some risk - maybe move it once or twice while there to avoid anyone casing the joint.

Just park in a huge casino parking garage. You can leave your car there forever and no one would be the wiser.

Ugh, please don't be one of those "Whelp, no $5 blackjack here, let's move onto the next place!" guys. I've been to Vegas with that type of person and even off strip that's impossible or very difficult to find.

I remember my friends and I asked the front desk at Excalibur if we could park our car in their garage to SLEEP in it and they OK'd us. Of course that was also about 8 years ago.

I've parked there when the Luxor lot was full, and yeah, no problems either. I have yet to have one of the bigger hotels even ask me about my car details, so they really aren't tracking who is parking where - especially when you consider the parking is free to entice people to come and gamble their money away - so they get paid either way. :)

Booking accommodation in Vegas is crazy. Prices go up triple on weekends.. want a 2 bedroom room? Maybe four times or more than the price of a very nice studio room.

I decided to book the cheapest, most central accommodation I could find - Bally's. Lucky that the Caesar's group actually has a nice little matrix of the prices of all their hotels before I did. While Bally's weekday price was very low, their weekend price was quite high. So much so it was actually cheaper to stay in Paris which was much cheaper on the weekend but higher on the weekdays but cheaper overall (and much nicer). So it pays to shop around if you are staying a weekend and a few days during the week since the costs won't necessarily stay relative and you may find nicer places are actually cheaper for the entire stay (or maybe switch hotels). The other impact on the price is any special offers the hotel has. Some hotels will have quite significant specials happening, again making a better hotel cheaper than a "cheap" hotel. (Be sure to double check that the package you select is actually live when booking, I had to do it twice since it didn't seem to apply it when I was about to purchase it). It pays to shop around and work out the cheapest based on the entire stay, especially weekend prices, and what place currently has the best package discounts (either a straight up percentage off the price or money towards something you will use in the casino).

Also, even though there was nothing to indicate I would get rewards, I also got a nice little discount from booking Paris by simply joining the Total Rewards club (for free) and putting that number in. I only joined about 1 min before booking the accommodation. If it wasn't for the "Resort fee" my room for 5 nights was crazy cheap.

The most hilarious thing I found was a hotel that had a fee to guarantee the booking you are making. So you are booking a room online, and you can pay a fee to guarantee that booking, which I kind of thought that was what I was doing, booking a room.. something I want guaranteed to exist and be mine when I get there. That is the most American thing I have seen in my life (Seinfeld is a documentary right?).

$10 dollar tables are very common so there shouldn't be an issue if that is what you want. The $5 tables on the strip though are pretty rare. Off strip though I've never had a problem finding $5 tables.

Can anyone speak to the March Madness experience in Las Vegas? I've heard it's a blast, and I'd like to try to get a group together, but it seems like it might be tough to get 10+ people into the same sports book.

You can run, but you'll just die tired...
Just spent 3 nights at the Venetian. Got upgraded to a 1500 sq ft room with a great view of the strip. Beautiful hotel. When we first walked out to St Marks Square it took me a bit before I realized I was actually still inside. The only negative I would say is that the costs for drinks were well above regular bar/club costs. I think I paid $16 for a bloody mary in a plastic cup at the pool. Other than that we liked it so much we got suckered paid the $249 for 3 nights at the Venetian, $400 slot credits, and 2 free shows as long as we devote 3 hours to a sales pitch on a new timeshare.

The sports books are really crowded in March. Maybe the second busiest time after the Superbowl. I go pretty much every year for it.

At the better ones, you have to get there early (like 7-8 am) to secure a seat and some sportsbooks now only let you sit there if you have a special coupon you get by placing a minimum bet. We used to go to the Venetian until they pulled that seat coupon poo poo.

The backup spot if everything on the strip is full is the Las Vegas Hilton. It's off the strip, but they open up a theater with a shitton of screens for seating so getting a seat is no problem. It's a drat good sportsbook in its own right too. The only downside is that its off the strip.

Just got back after spending a week in Vegas for a conference with my wife. A couple reviews for things we did while we were there.

Staying at the Palazzo was an experience in itself. I've had a couple suite rooms in other places in the past, but not were as large and comfy as their base room here. We spent some time at both the Venetian and Palazzo pools, and I personally thought the Palazzo was a bit better. There were always empty chairs to be found, and if you didn't want to be in the direct sun shade was plentiful.

Last time we went we saw Love which we both thought was amazing. This time we saw Mystere. The show was great and had top calibur performances for all of the stuff they did. It was a good show, but we both felt that Love was better.

Absinthe was awesome. If you are going to Vegas and can only see one show, then put this at the top of your list. The best explanation I could give when describing it would be a burlesque circus sideshow. It was extremely funny and raunchy, but in a good way.

My wife and I enjoy Iron Chef so we decided we want to try either Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill or Mario Batali's place. We ended up going to Mesa. The food was fantasic, and we have the added benefit of being seated right next to Brad Garrett which was a trip in itself. Most of the other places we hit were fairly generic since my conference provided breakfast and lunch. We did hit Hash House a Go Go for breakfast one morning which was pretty much a meal to set you for all day.

We only spent time gambling once and ended up over at Casino Royale with some other people I knew. Craps was $3 and Blackjack was $5. Much better than the $25 tables over at Palazzo. The $2 foot long hot dog place in the back always had a line, so we hit it on the way back from one of our shows one night. It was surprisingly a good dog.

Downtown Cocktail Lounge. Any of the bars in/around Fremont will be just fine for that if you're NOT looking to go clubbing and just want to hit the bar scene. The Griffin I've heard good things about too. But I have zero rec's for clubs.

Staying at mgm so hakkasan is a good option.

Went to a bar named "artifice" last night. The jazz band was great and the bar tenders were super nice. I recommend it!

Sorry if this has been asked before but are cheap tickets for shows, best bought at those booths during the day? I think they are called "tix4less"?

TheReverend
Jun 21, 2005

They often times can be really cheap there. I went there looking for tickets for KA'. On my way to the booth near the coke bottle, I was exiting MGM Grand and there was an MGM employee giving out "coupons" for cheap KA' tickets. It turned out that going though MGM directly with the coupon was the cheapest way to get tickets. Keep in mind though that this was for a same-day show (same as the booths).

Hooters of all places has $1 earlybird blackjack and $3 tables, so that's where I'll be. I actually deal blackjack and three card up here in BC, so I just want to see if my "skills" translate to the other side of the table or not. I have no pre-conceived biases toward gambling, so this should be a logical advantage if I'm the one shelling out rather than raking in.

Speaking of which, going to vegas for the first time since I was 2, between September 15-20. Looking at booking into Paris for the 16 onward (and a $25 airport room on the 15th, since we get in late anyway), since the rates booking thru the Total Rewards program are really favorable- an average of $55 per night before that bloody resort fee.

Definitely doing Penn & Teller, and *shudder8 trying to work up comp points through some silly games on Facebook. The biggest question is, where to eat? The trick in a lot of places seems to be to avoid the strip (that silly oval office Gordon Ramsay seems to think that charging me $23 for a burger and fries is a good idea), but we have no issue going all out for one really good meal then spending the rest of our money at mom n pops or Hash House A Go Go. Suggestions there? Is Roy's as good as they say?

Thanks hivemind.

Both the Red Rock resort on the west side of town and Green Valley Ranch on the southeast side have had $5 blackjack if you're still looking, GregNorc. Saw them at the M on the far (far) south end of town too, but not this last weekend when I was there for dinner, oddly
