A girl I know's twin just died. She posted a memorial poem about her twin.

Somebody replied : "Hey gurl! I mizz u! Letz hang soon, call me!"

E: it actually happened, but posting a screen shot would be incredibly disrespectful.

Leaving aside the extreme inappropriateness of this example, I've never understood why people do this. OK, so someone posted something and that reminded you that you haven't seen them in a while, so why not send them a message or post something on their wall? Why would you say it as a comment on a completely unrelated post?

This just showed up in my feed last night. You probably think I overreacted and didn't have to censor it but it's actually pretty bad. Like, furry vagina, so I'm not sure why it's getting shared by a bunch of people on Facebook.

A friend of mine sent this to me, not sure why I bothered censoring the names when all this poo poo is on a public Facebook page anyway.

Usually it's old people that don't know any better. A friend of mine made an album for her senior year of college, and her aunt commented something along the lines of "Me and Nancy went to Six Flags and rode the big roller coaster!" on it. Every time the album was updated, I would see that stupid comment.

In this case though, it sounds like someone much younger.

So, my gf just posted some ee card meme about welfare. It says "Uncle Sam is NOT your baby's daddy. Work for it!" And there's an old-timey school marm lookin lady on it. Almost immediately, a lady posts this:

some lady posted:

Unpleasant assumption that every mother using welfare to help raise her children is lazy, not working, and yes - let's wait for it - black. Sorry. Not buying it.

So, putting aside that I think memes are dumb in general, does this lady have a point? Is it dog-whistle racism? I don't really agree with any of her points. Is there something I'm missing? Even if I am wrong, I think posting "yes - let's wait for it -" qualifies her as a smug idiot.

The thing about dog whistles is that you can blow them without hearing them. The thing where you accuse everyone who has a right of center opinion of racism pisses me off too but its possible the meme actually was racist somehow.

Not nearly as smug as you have to be to post political memes, though.

Oh, yeah, I get that the whole thing is stupid and a bit mean-spirited but I just wanted to know if I was missing something else beyond that. I asked the lady how it was targeted towards black people but she never responded so I felt like maybe she misread something. In those situations, my first instinct is always "gently caress you that's my girl and I will fight youargue with you on the internet!" but when I stepped back to look at it, I could see how she got the other stuff but not the "It's about black people."

"Baby daddy" is a term used much more frequently to refer to an unmarried black father. Even if no longer exclusively used as such, it's presence in pop culture and the language of Americans has a clear racial undertone. This is combined with decades of the "welfare queen" meme, in which politicians, pundits, and even presidents have implied that welfare is abused primarily by poor urban women of color who have children deliberately to be able to pick up a bigger welfare check.

So yes, her response was not worded to start a dialogue. Your girlfriend, who has probably just absorbed the institutionalized racism inherent in American culture and who does not see herself as racist, will be angry and hurt and will probably post about how she has black friends.

But yeah the meme she posted promotes a racist trope and the person who called her on it isn't the idiot.
