DAILY DOUBLE! Please excuse my poor replication, poor $45 Vivitar, and all-around poor photography. Brethren Church (top left): South Main St. (center right): New Challenge: Find a showroom, billboard, or signage for a motorcycle or automobile company that is defunct or no longer imports to your country. Photo, bike in frame, etc.

gently caress it, I stayed up late researching this so I'm going to post even though I was beaten. The three historical photos were taken during the 1968 riots in DC after MLK's assassination. I went through dozens of pictures and most of the places were so badly damaged they just got torn down afterwards, or in other cases the buildings later succumbed to DC's relentless development. This old bank at 14th and G NW looks like it only saw light looting, and incredibly the store is still there 45 years later, although I believe it's gone out of business. This one I did poorly but it's the best shot of the looting damage.

Thanks. I've since figured out where the church at top right is, but I can't decipher the other street views, and the grain elevator and railroad depot are long gone.

It's surprisingly hard. Obviously down here there are plenty of things I could have gone for with historic photos from every imaginable angle, but when I started looking for something else I was blown away by how much this city has changed. Some of the buildings I was looking at survived the riots and were really beautiful, but with very few exceptions they've become huge steel and glass office buildings.

More from the historical photo challenge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_building THE HOOVER BUILDING IN 1949 by StockCarPete, on Flickr Difficult to get this shot without getting run over, as that road is the onramp for the a40. It's now a headquarters of Tesco, a huge grocery store chain. At least it's still in use!

Excellent photos, beautiful building; I'm a sucker for Art Deco. E: Cheers to Tesco for planting a sign on the front lawn rather than defacing the building itself. Dagen H fucked around with this message at 18:18 on Aug 17, 2013 |

Bucephalus posted:Excellent photos, beautiful building; I'm a sucker for Art Deco. West London is sort of an Art Deco museum, not too far away on the A4 you've got Gillette Corner which has a nice little cluster of surviving Art Deco factories, and further up the A40 there's a bunch more which are slowly being demolished because they're not as well-known. Most of the Underground stations out that way, particularly on the Piccadilly and District lines, are lovely Art Deco pieces too. There's some crackers in the West End too (those that escaped the Luftwaffe and the 60s anyway). I know this challenge is gone now but I sort of wanted to go the other way with it; I live in an area that has changed completely beyond recognition in the last 20 years, so a picture like this: was taken somewhere that now looks like this: (Slight liberty taken with location and the Street View wide-angle lenses kinda sell the Canary Wharf towers, among the tallest in Europe, pretty short, but you get the idea). Maybe I'll go for it anyway as a general project, seems like as good a thing to photograph as any.

I was going to do Gillette corner, but I couldn't find any good old photos of it from street level (plus, it wasn't on my way!). Those are some of the more well known, but hell even Vanguard Storage on the a40 is maximum Deco. The Barratt Homes development in Brentford just beside the M4 is a good one, and like you said there's tons more. My absolute favourite though is the Barkers building in Kensington: http://goo.gl/maps/NlQgG

I say let's expand the challenge from Find a showroom, billboard, or signage for a motorcycle or automobile company that is defunct or no longer imports to your country. Photo, bike in frame, etc. to be Any defunct company, not just cars or bikes I didn't know where to start with this one since Cincinnati isn't really the Mecca of imports, my only guess was stumbling across a Saturn sign. I bet it's a lot easier to find any old defunct showroom, billboard or signage. Edit: Apparently Bucephalus likes e-detectiving goons based on what they post and then post up freaking "I know where you live, I'm watching you" pics. I'm fairly open with poo poo here because I thought bored creeps like that didn't actually exist. nsaP fucked around with this message at 17:54 on Aug 22, 2013 |

I just clicked his probation avatar curious as to why he got a 30 day probate right after a ban, not sure how that's 'ruining' anything. Judging by the posts I wouldn't wait around for him to come and amend the challenge, and unless people take offense to me stating what he got booted for I don't think we have to worry about de-rails or ruined threads?

If you're on Android, a combination of ImageShrink, Imgur, and Awful Betamax works well. Sure you could set your camera to take lower res photos, but this way you just leave it high, send to imageshrink, 800x600 it, send it to imgur from inside imageshrink, copy the bbcode, and paste it into your post. I rarely use the platinum image attachment thing because it usually flakes out on me and is/used to be a pain to edit.

Leake Street, which goes under waterloo station. Basically it's a free graffiti zone, where anyone can paint whatever they like. There's also a car wash that all the cabbies use (also, I think there may have been some pornography being filmed in that last shot) Also, although it's more house art than street art, and because it's in my 'hood', And since we've had stereotypes and independent coffee shops, like the Scooter Café seen here: either a bike themed business, or local biker hangout, be it bar, restaurant, cafe, whatever. Aprilia have been teasing a new version, based on the 1200 engine, for about as long as they've been making the 1200 engine. If it ever happens and is pretty as the old Mille-derived one I'm going to have to make some hard decisions...
