I finished the three routes of Hate Plus and (mostly Mute spoilers) Hyun-ae is sure the intended AI to take back isn't she; what with getting exclusive logs in only her route in both games. And I knew going in that Mute wasn't gonna have a good time, but drat if I'm not saddened by my favorite character killing herself. I know she's a misogynist jerk, but I've always thought she was a more interesting character than Hyun-ae. You gotta love that poor AI trying to protect a society that didn't even trust her with enough power to stop a teenager from turning off the air.

p.s. I did the cake thing. but achievements are broke on OS X, so I don't even know if I entered that code right.

Did Mute's death really even add anything other than some forced drama? Because I felt it didn't really add anything to the story other than an excuse to have a more political correct mute replace her, like day 3 could have dealt with her grief and stuff but instead nope killed off, here's a new one, have fun

Are there any dating sims where you can be the abuser in an abusive relationship? The entire time I was playing Katawa Shoujo, I wanted to use the girls' illnesses to hurt their self-esteem, or tell the ones with sensory problems (blindness and deafness) that things were happening when they weren't, stuff like that. But the protagonist was too much of an insecure manchild to do anything cool. So now I've got a hankering to in a different game.

You do sort of play as an alpha male in Sengoku Rance, but that's more of a bad strategy game that happens to have some hentai than a dating sim.

Uhhhh, not really. Usually the darker themed ones like that would be more on the nukige side, and I doubt many people here have played them, much less would admit to doing so in thread. Cross Channel is the only one I could think of that involves a sometimes outright evil protagonist that would get any discussion here.

Are you talking about the Mizuka route? I played that one first and decided I never wanted to touch that game again. Incidentally a path centered on being a neglectful and abusive jerk makes picking the right choices unintuitive if you're not using a guide or spoiling yourself, since usually to get a particular character's ending you take the choices that are the opposite of treating them like poo poo.

- Well that that awkward marriage proposal wasn't the thing I expected to get a CG of first, but I'll take it.

- Poor Natsuhi, despised by pretty much all of her family, but hey at least the family head likes her, kinda.

- Some weird occult symbol- why are you guys losing your mind over someone's art project- oh my shitfuck  goddamn.

- Christ, the updated character profiles are creepy.

- I'm sorry George :smith:

- At least the music is loving awesome when they find the dead body pileup.

- Oh poo poo something else? Oh no it's just blood. Shouldn't it be like, trailing off somewhere?

- Maria is loving creepy, why does nobody point out how deadpan is when she's told about her mother's dea- Thank you Battler. Jeez.

- So the head of the family is gone off probably to meet with Beatrice and wow this guy has a bathtub and a bed inside his study? Guess that makes him the oldest basement dweller.

- Wait wait wait, didn't that epitaph thing on Beatrice's portrait have something about offing six people for something? Hmmm...

Personally, I would love to see MuvLuv LP, or at least an attempt at that. I don't think it'd be doomed from the beginning as there've been a lot of success with VN LPs recently and even stuff like Hyperdimension Neptunia got people's attention (mostly on the negative side, but with friendly attitude) so going through ML Extra might be doable even on SA. Of course it will require a good effort from LP'er to present it serviceable and hype it (along with people who already read it) properly with MLA content.

Maybe I'm too desensitized, but after looking up at ML suits again,d I don't see what's wrong about them. It doesn't seem like they'd require any censoring. Some of the Hyperdimension Neptunia's CGs were more "dangerous" in that regard.

Umineko is an interesting one.

It's the kind of novel that's designed to be essentially unspoilable in more ways then one: the lack of clear answers and some heavy implications that the author would mix genuine hints with pure bullshit in his interviews. It's pretty cool.

My favorite is EP7, because it's basically Ryukishi ranting about the evolution and the current state of the genre. I think that Chandler's The Simple Art Of Murder works pretty well to explain both Willard H. Wright's character and the nature of the episode.

The only way Muv Luv Alternative LP could work is if it's hosted here in ADTRW and even then I hardly see a point or an appeal. Maybe, it would work as some kind of "simulplay" with people playing along and posting their theories and reactions.

Alternative's suits are okay, skin-tight latex pilot suits aren't really a new concept even to "normal" Mecha Anime.

Unlimited is the problematic one because it has actual exposed nipples, and unlike sex scenes, the suits are so prevalent that it's hard to censor out unless someone hacks the game and mods in the All-Ages version versions instead or something like that.

Or replace them with the coverups they wear in cold weather. But considering that Muv Luv's engine is notorious for being almost unhacakable, I don't think such a thing is even feasible.

Better idea is to have it a screenshot LP, replace problematic scenes with all-age version and just pay no heed to that it is really different and try to keep it otherwise contained to headshots only.

As for anime harem and stuff, just keep that stuff contained as "alternate routes" update.

And do all routes at once in one playthrough.

If you're curious the only argument I saw him make was when he stated that [mega spoilers for Umineko ahoy] Shannon and Kannon literally cannot be the same person because here in red truth a person was defined as a body and not a personality, then he shows battler being asked nitpicky questions from furido "can I assume three people entered this room meaning three bodies?" and he said "yeah sure three bodies, whatever, nobody was faking or anything. calm down" so this not-at-all-on-the-spectrum robot logic combined with other red truths means blah blah blah who cares. I want someone else to put in the leg work and tell me what his arguments are but if the first comment I read Rosa did it, with george's help, without ever telling shannon she was doing it on her behalf, then haha nope. I'm fine with my interpretation, thanks.

Rosa / George make a lot of sense actually. I'll probably follow along Umineko LP with this angle in mind.

Anyway, on the subject of Umineko (well, sort of), I've been reading (and rereading) a whole lot of mystery fiction lately and found an awesome anti-fantasy whodunnit story, "Hag's Nook" by John D. Ryukishi borrowed quite a lot from Carr actually: for example, he lifted the concept of red truth from one of his stories (can't remember the exact one) and fourth wall breaking interludes from "A Hollow Man".

iOS: Planetarian
PC: Ever17, Remember11, all of Christine Love's stuff

I liked all of the above, but I guess if I had to be specific I'd like to read something along the crazy mindfuck lines of VLR/E17/R11. I think one obvious recommendation that would fit your criteria would be either or both of Higurashi and Umineko. Certainly lots of twists, with great music (barring the first Higurashi game) and well developed casts.

If you haven't already seen the anime for it Steins;Gate would also be a great choice.

I haven't read VLR/E17/R11 so I don't know exactly what kind of mindfucking they contain, but possibilities!

G-Senjou no Maou: This is an amazing VN crime thriller that focuses on a super genius villain committing crimes that the main cast gets drawn into. Sort of a Holmes/Moriarty feeling to the relationship between the villain and one of the main characters. It also has an amazing and insane mindfuck of a climax. Read this if you'd like watching a villain play 4 dimensional chess while most everybody else is struggling to play tic-tac-toe.

Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo: This is set in an alternate reality where criminals receive tailored punishments for their crimes in the form of "obligations." The people who oversee these punishments are naturally quite powerful in this society, and the main character is training to become one of them. A lot of the VN looks into how these obligations affect the characters and why this might not be an ideal system of punishment, and we get a view into just how hosed up things are as the story goes on. There are a couple neat twists in the story, and it's pretty interesting to read about such a fundamentally different society.

Saya no Uta: This is the mindfuckiest of stories. It's also very gruesome and has a lot of sexual content, although given the context it all occurs in the sex scenes come off as deeply disturbing. The story is about a man who suffered severe brain trauma from an accident and now sees everything in the world as rotting pulsating hunks of flesh. It's reaaalllly hosed up. He ends up meeting a girl who actually looks human to him, although she seems to never show herself to other people, so what does she actually look like...? This is pretty much the must unsettling thing I've ever read, but if you can stomach it it's a great story.

Of those three I think G-Senjou no Maou is the one I liked best, but they're all quite good.

I really, really hate these CGs. The kindest thing I can say is that they're not as ugly as the anime or manga equivalents I suppose. Maybe if the original Hugurashi anime wasn't so shittily animated others wouldn't have latched onto gross exaggerations as a "charm" of the franchise. Thanks, DEEN.
