Shifty Pony posted:Bronze Radio Return will be in town and tickets are $10. Worth pulling the trigger on that one? Hell parking will likely end up costing more than that because mass transit here cuts out at 11. I think so -- I haven't seen them live, but the live versions of their tracks I've heard aren't bad at all. If you like them, you'll enjoy it.

Man, this is the best new song I've heard all year I think. San Fermin - Sonsick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1czCNnPyHlw Almost reminds me of the Dirty Projectors too much, but it's so good I can give it a pass.

In more "Royals" news, this kick-rear end video came out recently. And yeah, these are the same guys who did the "Somebody That I Used to Know" on one guitar video that became huge right before the song itself became huge.

Apparently a new Cults album is coming out in September? I'm seriously starting to think all my favorite artists of the last four years are all releasing new albums this years. First song from the new album, I Can Hardly Make You Mine, definitely feels like a progression from the stuff on their first album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1ARKA_sJg4

I only discovered The Radio Dept. earlier this summer -- yeah, I'm way late, I know -- and their first and third albums have been on repeat almost non-stop. (Pet Grief isn't bad but almost none of the songs stick like nearly all of them do from Lesser Matters and Clinging To A Scheme.) I also almost always find it interesting how many bands who were at one point guitar-based turn into a synthpop outfit, and these guys pull it off very well even if their second album sort of shows them readjusting a little. They need to release a new album already! For anyone else who might not be aware, have some songs... From Lesser Matters (2003): "Where Damage Isn't Already Done" "Keen On Boys" "1995" "Strange Things Will Happen" "Lost And Found" Someone else can swoop in and properly rep Pet Grief if they want, I don't know it as well. From Clinging To A Scheme (2010): "Heaven's On Fire" "Never Follow Suit" "The Video Dept." "Memory Loss" "You Stopped Making Sense"

But yeah, good Scandinavian synthpop — not a whole lot of depth to it, but an enjoyable listen.

"White Lighter" by Typhoon got released today. I hadn't really heard of them, but caught a snippet on NPR. Really loving good. I'm only 3 songs into the new album, but they're worth of the price of admission alone.

Seconding the Typhoon recommendation. I got my record in today (which is a gorgeous splattered LP) and have been listening to the stream for a while. I think of them as the spiritual successors to Anathallo, if anyone remembers them, but any fan of indie folk and intricate orchestral arrangements should love the record. It never goes where you think it might go.

NPR is now streaming the new Okkervil River LP, The Silver Gymnasium. http://www.npr.org/2013/08/25/214471289/first-listen-okkervil-river-the-silver-gymnasium?sc=fb&cc=fmp It's kind of a concept album: quote:It's human nature to romanticize a specific time and place in the past — a moment when , or opportunities were laid out like a banquet. For 's Will Sheff, it's been impossible to let go of Meriden, N.H., circa 1986: That tiny town is where he spent his childhood (he turned 10 that summer) and where his parents taught at an area boarding school. Meriden is where Sheff's visions of youth and innocence reside, even as he's gone on to live in Austin and Brooklyn, and to tour the world. So that's all kind of cool. As for the album, I'd only heard one track before this morning ("Stay Young") and was pretty 'meh' on it, as I was on their last album, I Am Very Far. This one, however, has exceeded my expectations quite a bit.

New Los Campesinos! LP, No Blues, out Oct. 29 That PF link also has the first single, "What Death Leaves Behind." I found these guys' early albums hard to swallow, but Hello Sadness was quite surprisingly one of my favorite albums of 2011. Some of the more cleverly written music out there.

That's what I meant — I think they toned down the twee-ness immensely on the last LP and I'm guessing the same will be true for this one.
