Personally I wouldn't bother. They're much weaker than the main route, just there in order to have dumb porn scenes with the other girls, and unneeded to play through to finish or understand the main plot.

Kanon's route is a particularly special shade of dumb because it feels like I've suddenly stepped into some kind of PSA message about the lives of figure skaters or something.

I thought the side paths were pretty dumb as well, and what happens in them directly contradicts the big revelation in the main path so it really feels like they were just thrown in as an afterthought like "Oh yeah we need to have multiple heroines." Other than that, the only problem I had with the story was the epilogue, I mean seriously the protag kills the equivalent of Osama bin Laden within a week and several miles of where he committed the largest terrorist act EVER and he gets sent to jail? Yeah loving right, he'd get a medal no matter how hosed up the Japanese legal system is.
What? No. Of course he'd be sent to jail.

That route was memorable for me if only for the scene near the end where Kyousuke gets beaten half to death. The first-person narration made that brutal to experience.

They did know, it's pretty clear. In the game, it's suggested that, had Kyousuke come out with the truth about things, he'd indeed have basically just gotten a slap on the wrist, since he was killing an international terrorist. But he turned himself into a target of hate, denied the possibility that he had any good motives involved, acted nasty towards Haru, etc. So they were harsher than they might have been. But he felt he didn't have a choice, because he couldn't allow Haru to be known as a would-be murderer. I thought it was a bit implausible, but it was super sad and I'm easily emotionally manipulated.

Not too far into Uminenko but goddamn the music is outstanding. Definitely want the soundtrack.

At this point I hope that the majority of the visual novel is just the siblings arguing over their inheritance. :allears:

Each game (or each set of games, since you're probably playing the bundled versions) comes with all its music on disc in ogg format. I'd recommend staying away until you've finished all the games in a bundle, though; a lot of the music is best encountered in situ.

It's the Italian pronunciation of the name, which will be explained later. It's also a nod to the Divine Comedy.

Okay, Maou just made me laugh my rear end off for the first time. Somewhat major spoilers - During the Shiratori hostage situation, I first chose to wait for Tokita and have her do it, which was really intense and whatnot. Everything went to poo poo - Kyousuke ended up threatening to kill Gonzou with a nail, Usami and the others were on the run from the yakuza, and Shiratori's dad drat near ended up dead. What happens if you call the police? Everything goes perfectly and nobody gets hurt in the least. I can totally appreciate that poo poo. :allears:

All this Umineko chat has made me start rereading Umineko. Let's see how far I get...

Umineko spoilers ahead (I'm talking late game spoilers here, don't highlight if you're currently reading)!

Cool stuff I noticed up until the boat ride: I got a good long chuckle out of the line about Battler being "the kind of man who would go around breaking hearts". The boat ride with Battler complaining about not being able to handle the speed, his random line about "seeing things from the other side", followed by the Captain of the boat slowing down feels like foreshadowing for some of the events in episodes 2 and 3 in retrospect.

More stuff...

Kyrie: "When a rose gives you trouble, it's best to just cut it off at the root!" Ahahahahahahahaha oh wow. Man I love Kyrie.

I actually played through most of Harukoi Otome (played Riru > Ayaka > Sonya > and part of Umi's route). I only started Umi's route because it's required to unlock Yuika's route. Overall I found the game to be so vanilla it was kinda boring - interspersed with cringeworthy moments of course. I didn't even make an attempt at the Kisaya route because I can't stand that weird "ye olde English" the translators gave her.

Umi's route ultimately made me uncomfortable enough to just shelf the game indefinitely, I might finish it one day with liberal use of the ctrl key, but not any time soon. That's obviously because it's the incest route but it can't decide if it just wants to be straight creepy and pandering, or if it wants to be a deep insightful look at a terrible issue in society. So it just settles for throwing in tons of elements of both with the end result being creepy and pandering. It seriously annoyed me that I could put off the incest in a handful of choices early in the route but then it hits a 'But thou must' choice where it doesn't matter what you choose. Why even put in a choice? poo poo I would've been happier if it led to an immediate wrong end than that 'but thou must' bullshit. I know it's dumb to complain about the sister route when she's featured heavily on the cover - it's not like I was surprised - but it turned out to be somehow even more uncomfortable than I expected for some reason. Also it's generic as hell, you know exactly what the problems are before they crop up and then when they do crop up it's fairly obvious how they'll be resolved - at least that was the impression I got across all the routes I played. Riru was pretty cool, sadly she got outshone by the far and away best character Oikawa - seriously I liked the male comic relief way better than any of the heroines - is that weird?

Whatever. I just typed way too many words about a mediocre Mangagamer titles lovely little sister route. I'm gonna go play Hate Plus.

Colour me excited. Kajitsu left a lot of questions un-answered, and Meikyuu is meant to contain most of them, if not all. I cannot wait To find out how Asako died, and how she could "pull the pin" from Yuuji and turn him into a killing machine.

So, finished one route of Yumina. Liking the game so far, the combat system is fairly enjoyable, if slow. Seriously, one route (fairly short, textwise) took a bit over 60 hours, and almost all of that is time spent fighting. The story isn't bad but also isn't really anything to write home about, being on about the same level as Kamidori, another gameplay heavy VN.

CTRL's kind of the "standard knowledge" for speeding up poo poo in a VN, so I'm guessing that's why they don't tell you that in a tutorial.

Okay, all finished with Harukoi Otome. It was dumb and generic, but enjoyable for what it is. Yuika's route was actually okay, despite my impression of her as a pretty bland character.
I'd say the order of quality for the routes would be something like Riru -> Kisaya -> Yuika -> Ayako -> Umi -> Sonya. Riru's was actually enjoyable (she's a total bro) and Sonya's was just the regular kind of dumb, rather than actually offensive like in some similar VNs. I got sort of annoyed by none of the NPCs giving Akihito any breathing room when he was feeling down, and serving as relationship genies and giving out sage advice.
So, yeah, I don't actually regret reading this, though it isn't even close to the best of the medium.

I'll try to take a break before picking up another VN, I'm getting pretty close to having read every notable one out there.

Yup. Finished a second route of Yumina just now, clocking in at a bit over 90 hours total now. So using ctrl in battles at least halved the time it took me to finish the route. This route (Ai's) felt longer than the first one (Kirara's) too. I liked this route better, I think. I like Kirara more as a character but the ending to her route was kind of an anticlimax.

You know as someone who played through Higurashi unpatched with the old art I can't imagine reading Uminenko without the PS3 patch. The high class feel of the setting and the characters would be totally lost with that art. Also I wouldn't have been about to repeatedly hear BEEAAATTRRRICE, which is just important. Feels like I'm watching a play during some of Kinzo's scenes.

Don't like it? well...

My main problem with the voice patch is nothing actually objective but simply that the characters don't sound at all like I imagined them in my head, except for Maria and oddly enough Kanon. Maria's the perfect high pitched annoying child, and Kanon's nice and sulky.

It really comes down to preference and this conversation is always :can: but I think the ps3 sprites while prettier are extremely generic and bland. And in some cases make some of the characters look completely different due to the expressions or just general appearance George for example, going from looking like a sort of doughy frumpy dude to a skinny bishonen makes his character arc not really..work as well.

It's definitely still just a personal preference thing though. If I had read it after the patch came out I could be singing a different tune.

Voice patch is almost completely necessary in the hammy scenes. Which is most of them. Likewise, I played with the PS3 graphics and couldn't imagine doing it with the original- if they're less generic than the updated designs, it's because they were drawn uniquely terribly.

As for being like a play, well, quite a bit of Umineko feels play-like, actually; Kumasawa is prone to doing soliloquies early on to explain details that couldn't be brought up in the exposition earlier, and there's a clear act structure in place for at least the first five chapters. Also EP 7 straight up depicts the backstory as a play.
