Dunban's official romanization (in the artbook) is "Dunbun". :downs:

This is indirectly related, but the original name for Dagran in The Last Story is Quark.

It helps if you think of it as a German spelling with a Mandatory Fantasy Y shoved in there.

Someone in the party has to have one. It's the law.

Edit: Alternately, it is pronounced "rain," only through the mouth of Eliza Doolittle: the Reyn in Speyn steys meynly on the pleyn.

I found listening to it being pronounced over and over again in-game for about 20 hours helped for me at least. I'm an aural thinker, so I can hear it in my head the way the characters pronounce it, British accents and all.

Yeah it is. It had issues I didn't notice and I decided to not be lazy and just wait til I'm well enough to record a proper commentary.

In the meantime - Thread question

What influences do you see in xenoblade? I've played a fair amount of games, but I have mostly played all the mainstream classics in each genre. Eg, the Final Fantasies, Zelda, etc, so I'm interested in what less typical games have informed the creation of this one. Obviously keep it spoiler free.

And there's some 'lp superstar' called janitor ironcross or something who has just stolen all of the xenoblade soundtrack and is using it all willy nilly as background music for his '13th age' lp. I recommend you all go find the last few episodes and help steal the music back.

Mechanically, I would say Final Fantasy XII really shaped a lot of how the game feels when I play it. Both share that "open world you can literally walk from one end to the other of" style of gameplay.

The combat also feels very XII-esque, with the line between exploration and combat being very permeable. Over all, I like XII's battle system better than Xenoblade's because there was more to customize and control and the party AI was as smart as you wanted it to be thanks to the Gambit system.

Setting-wise, I'm at a bit of a loss for comparisons, all said. I've encountered "worlds built on the back of X" stories before, but nothing of this scope and scale. I want to say Baten Kaitos, but I honestly haven't have any experience with it beyond seeing the occasional screenshot, so take that with a grain of salt.

EDIT: Actually, I have thought of something. The setting reminds me an awful lot, aesthetically at least, of Chrono Cross, another game Monolith had more than a few fingers in as a developer.

And story-wise? Well that one's piss easy: Tetsuya Takahashi has been trying to perfect what he only got about 45% finished in Xenogears for the last 15 years. And after trying five times (ie: the Xenosaga trilogy, and the two Baten Kaitos games), he finally stuck the landing on #6, Xenoblade Chronicles.

I really can't say much more without it being a spoilerfest. However, I felt, upon completing Xenoblade, an odd sense of completion, having followed the Xeno series since Xenogears back on the PS1. This was the one that took all the themes that the games leading up to it had been experimenting with and made a complete thought out of them, and restored my faith in Takahashi and co. As storytellers and pretty much guaranteed my eventual purchase of a Wii U for X, and only for X.

The emphasis on keeping tabs on cooldowns while your characters auto-attack also reminds me of World of Warcraft, but that's probably been mentioned umpteen times already.

Yeah, agreed 100%. He finally nailed it this time, I think. It's a real trip looking back at the Gordian Knot of Xenogears' narrative and comparing it to Xenoblade Chronicles' narrative. Xenoblade is a lot more focused and meanders a whole hell less than previous Xeno games, and benefits greatly from it.

I wonder if it's a case similar to Silicon Knights with Eternal Darkness - Nintendo keeping a tight reign on them to make sure they turn out something good. And generally telling them "get this part done before you add something else".

Good point. I wonder just what exactly was the ratio between Monolith's artistic coming of age vs. Nintendo's quality control in Xenoblade turning out as good as it did. Because Namco pretty much gave them free reign to do what they wanted and they put out three games that no one really understood and were commercial bombs for it. And I'm saying that as someone who loves the Xenosaga trilogy.

When I tell other people about this game, I usually describe it as having the exploration and expositional style of Skies of Arcadia mashed together with the combat of Dragon Age. That's usually enough to pique some interest.

I'm also reminded of Skies of Arcadia, although it's been so long since I played it that's mostly due to the improbable land masses involving spectacularly long falls.

Something about the way the natural world is presented, particularly when they really decide to crank the dial on the scenery porn, also makes me think of Okami. The art style is obviously very different, but if you compare, say, Satorl Marsh (the current area) at night to one of the revival sequences in Okami there seems to be a similar aesthetic at play. Of course, that's probably less direct influence than Japanese developers living in Japan taking inspiration from Japanese landscapes.

I wonder if both of these draw something from Monster Hunter, about which I know almost nothing except that it is very popular and has a similar open-world approach with quest system and a similar timing-based combat mechanism.

I still feel that the perfect Final Fantasy combat system would be XII's gambit system, but modified so you can save gambits and swap them on the fly without entering the menu, like paradigms from 13.

When you have an update, it's ENCOURAGED to make a new reply, even if it's a double or triple post. People tend to only check threads if they see new posts.

I've started my replay of the game. I'm now supposed to be heading for Raguel Bridge in pursuit of Juju, but the little idiot can wait as far as I'm concerned. However, since I'm now level 18 and have finally completed my collectopaedia for Colony 9 and Tephra Cave, I suppose there's no putting it off anymore.

One thing I don't like is searching for the missing collectibles for the collection thing. Even the Google Doc faq doesn't mention where the best chances of finding some are.

I've been trying to play as other characters more, other than Shulk. I'm getting better at Reyn, but early-game Sharla is just tedious. I've been trying to use her tranquilizer bullet for crowd control, but I've been screwing it up and switching targets tends to make the other members of my team stop attacking entirely, which is not helpful. I'll come back to her later after she's gotten more useful abilities. She's not fun to control personally at the moment.

Naked Dunban is unfeasible until later on for various reasons. ALSO waiting until I have a full collection of scanty outfits for the other people in the team. For unit cohesion, obviously.

Sharla is only worth trying much later in the game when both she and lots of other people have a full set of skills and lots more to swap in and out. I don't find her remotely viable let alone interesting until after we have a full crew.

I watched your first LP attempt. I tend to watch a lot of JRPG LP's because I usually find a lot of charm in the characters, setting, and sometimes even the general plot but usually find the gameplay pretty tedious. Xenoblade seems to have taken some steps to alleviate this but probably not enough for me.

I liked the British VAs in this (and off-topic, Last Story too). As I'm really not accustomed to it, Shulk's VA made him sound a bit more adult-ish than his character model looks and typical JRPG protagonists sound.

While this is a huge stretch, the Xenoblade world kind of reminded me of the Star Ocean series, where the hero begins in a heavy, fantasy-based world until futuristic technologies intermingle with it (I'm loosely referring to Bionis = Fantasy Land, and Mechonis = Future/Machine Land). It's a clumsy comparison, but it reminded me of said series regardless. Also, this game was the sole purpose I got the Wii, and these days, I can't stand JRPGs.

I'm having a blast watching the LP, as I haven't played it in a while. It's a few vids back from the current update, but I totally forgot all about Xord.
