Ooh yeah - sounds like fun. If you don't get an answer, report back on your expereiences, please.

So how's the weather over Christmas? Weather.com shows 40s-50s as an average, which is nice compared to what I'm used to at that time of year. I guess if there is a freak snowstorm or something I can always pick up something heavier, but in most cases would just having several layers be enough most days?

Looks like I'll be in Vegas for a bachelor party.

I used to LOVE gambling at Oshea's and did so almost exclusively. I always stayed at the Harrah's because I always got cheap/free rooms and it was right next to Oshea's. I liked their $5 craps tables. Which leads me to my question: I haven't been back to Oshea's since they apparently destroyed it and turned it into the quad. I got a free room at the quad so I took it, but where can I play $5 craps close by?

So to move the conversation away from hotel rates and mini-golf - which is definitely awesome - for a moment, does anyone have meaningful experience with different strip clubs in LV that they would be willing to share?

Based on personal and friends' experience, a "lapdance" seems to vary greatly between clubs (and of course dancers). And after a few too many  it can get difficult and perhaps hazardous to try to judge what exactly constitutes acceptable behavior between consenting adults. To clarify, not interested in full-service, but curious about the level of "contact" that is allowed within different clubs.

I don't know what's standard and what isn't, but if a black girl at Little Darlings says "I'll take care of you if you guess what country I'm from" with a wink, the answer is Eritrea.

I've never been to Vegas before, but what makes staying in Vegas over the weekend (assuming you have the option) worth the ridiculous hike in hotel prices for Fri/Sat nights? Anything? I considered staying in a less expensive hotel for a few nights, then on Sunday checking in to a nicer hotel for the rest of my stay, but I have a feeling it's not worth the trouble.

Vegas is a weekend party town. Think Disneyworld for adults. :hfive: Lots of people go there for two or three days of non-stop partying, then drag themselves to the airport on Sunday morning and sleep all the way home. If you come with the right attitude few places can match it for FUN. No matter what you like to do: eat, dance, drink, gamble, hook up, got to shows, etc. etc. you can do lots of it in Vegas and for a wide variety of budgets. However, when you burn the candle at both ends with a blowtorch, 3 days is about the limit for one trip. Most people would find a week there a bit much. (YMMV)

If your schedule permits, going during the week can be MUCH cheaper and less busy any time of year. (I've never thought of Vegas as crowded per se...) But if there is something specific that you would like to do (especially shows and clubs) make sure they are open during the week, lots of things close for a few days Mon-Thu., but each place's schedule is different.

Have fun!

Thoughts on some of the better sports books in Vegas? I've been to both Caesar's and Rio's and found them to be good, but I don't have a lot to compare them too, especially for football season. I've got comped rooms at Luxor this weekend and was thinking of hitting up a book for pro and/or college football. I assume the Luxor's will be terrible, but I've heard MGM or Mandalay Bay would be a decent/close alternative. Any other places I should consider that have specific pros (better comps, atmosphere, etc) to going?

Tropicana just re-did theirs not too long ago. Huge, bright, gorgeous LED screens and a good amount of chairs. Never been there for NFL games though so I can't say how busy it gets on Sundays.

That's assuming you're staying within walking distance of the Luxor. LVH constantly has the best lines, prop bets, parlays, etc. That's a decent cab ride from Luxor though.

If you're staying at the Luxor, you'll be close to New York New York, so you might enjoy the ESPNZone. It's not exactly a sportsbook, but it is Vegas' ... "unique"... take on a sports-bar. And once you've actually placed your bets its a great place to actually watch as your money rolls in. :smug:

I'll second this. I was in town for a convention, and found a flight $150 cheaper flying out on Wednesday compared to Thursday. Given that the extra weeknight at the hotel was around $50, it seemed like a no-brainer. Despite the fact that it was my third time in Vegas, it became my first time gambling since the table minimums were lower for everything.

I was in the mood for a more relaxing experience (as odd as that sounds in Vegas) so I stayed at the Palms Place and had a great time. Got some good food, good drinks, chilled at the pool and the spa, had a shave, and got a massage. Vegas has had a rap for being fake, gaudy, and sleazy, but like you said, new Vegas is really about having something for everyone. The only thing I would've done differently was rent a car rather than taking taxis/shuttles/monorail everywhere. I wasn't completely hammered 24/7 as I thought I'd be, and I went all over the place in terms of seeing sights and gaming/shopping.

I do have an odd question, I liked basically all the music they played at the hotel (in the hallways and such), what would be a good way to find out where they get their in-store plays? I tried e-mailing the general customer service address with no luck. I'd call, but I don't want to come across as a rival trying to steal their proprietary info. Obviously, the best way would have been to tip the concierge in person to find out for me, but I didn't have a chance on my way out. Am I overthinking this?

How about actually calling the concierge desk midday Vegas time on a weekday when you know they're not busy. It's really easy to ignore an e-mail, but much harder to do so once you're on the phone with someone. Also, a hotel like the Palms will have "real" concierges (the kind with the crossed key cufflinks and lapel pins - not the ones with the plastic name tag that says "Hi My Name is Brandy") and in my experience these folks are all-knowing, all-seeing sources of wisdom. I bet they'll know what they music they're playing is.

Good luck!

-Aria

As in, which one has the best luxury:dollar ratio. And money aside which one is the raddest of them all. I'm leaning towards Wynn just because of what I've read but I hear Cosmo and Aria are pretty good deals and not much "worse" than the Wynn.

I can only speak to Aria, but it's very nice, modern, and fairly new. Not cheap, certainly, but also not that expensive. It's got a lot of neat technology integration in the rooms, which is one of the selling points (I enjoyed it, at least).

So I'm considering going to Vegas as a 25th birthday thing, which also happens to coincide (roughly) to when my beloved Missouri Tigers are playing in the college basketball tournament at the Orleans Arena in late Nov. Now I'm a fairly decent gambler--here in St Louis we're spoilt for choice when it comes to casinos, and I've spent more than a few nights after Blues games playing $2 craps at the Casino Queen on the East Side and generally enjoying myself/playing a wee bit of poker, so as far as gaming goes I don't need tips there. Currently I'm looking at Jetsetter (Gilt's hotel site) for possible rooms, and right now the deals they have that stand out to me are:

--HRH All-Suite Tower ($313 total, this is based on a Thu/Sun stay)
--HRH itself ($290 tot)
--Luxury Suites at the Signature ($397, but this room includes a full kitchen)

Which one of these three would any of you recommend, or could you suggest something better/additional things to do (besides the hoops, I'm already wanting to visit the National Pinball Museum, see Penn and Teller, and probably hit up a club or two depending on what's going down)?

Umm if by Signature you mean the Signature at MGM Grand I would stay there.
I was there last Nov and it was exceptional.
The room was really nice, the staff was really nice.

It's off-strip so to speak. But not nearly as off-strip as Hard Rock.
But keep in mind you get get from the Signature to the MGM Grand casino floor really quickly (5 minutes?) via a system of indoor "people conveyor belt" contraptions.

Hard Rock is supposed to be cool for getting laid (if you're into that sort of thing :v:).
I was with my fiance when I went so... I never went there ;)

Yeah I wouldn't stay at the Hard Rock in November if I was interested in non-Hard Rock things, especially in November (pool action).

I would do something cheap mid-strip like Harrahs and use it as a base for all that other stuff you want to do.

We've stayed 6-7 properties and Harrah's is by far our favorite. It's the perfect balance of price and amenities for us. And as avid drunken strip-wanderers it really is ground-zero. Now that O'Shea's is closed, the McDonalds at between Harrah's and the Royale is about the best food deal if you want cheap and easy.

We are avoiding our families and headed there for Christmas. I'm excited to see just what type of people will be playing craps on Christmas morning with us.

I am also looking into doing Vegas during the first week of October. I will be by myself and am thinking of staying there for 3-4 nights.

It will be the first time that I will be in the US, I plan on doing some holdem and maybe seeing a show or two and also visiting one of these fabled strip clubs. I am also curious about these HRH events you guys are mentioning and would like a bit more detail... Basically some gambling, a decent amount of partying and even a strip club or two (by the way, I have no idea how American strip clubs work, any detailed, reliable sources of information on the subject? Everything I've googled tells you something else depending on every city and state, and the rules on Vegas clubs seem to be hazy).

The Cosmo is a quandary to me. It's classy, but the service is poo poo. We've stayed there once (my Dad has been two other times).

It was kind of a disaster. The balcony was nice, and the rooms are fantastic, but there's no coffee pot, and the nearest coffee without a half-hour line in the morning is the next Casino over. Cosmo has a "hidden pizza" restaurant, that my parents swear by. I had it, it's good. It's pretty, but if I was planning a high dollar trip on the strip, I'd stay at the Wynn or the Venetian.

Other than that, it's nice. I heard the bank finally sold it, though I don't know to who.

I've been bartending for a good chunk of my life and I'd love to get a bit of a feel for the industry over there, half the reason I'm going is that as sad as it is, I have a huge interest in bar fitouts (especially when money is no object), architecture and service styles so I'd love to get a feel for how poo poo works over there, while getting completely sideways, of course.

XS & Tryst at Wynn
Ghost Bar at the Palms
Liquid Day Club at Aria
Viva at Rio

That should get you started. But honestly any high end hotel will have a number of these places. :-)

One observation from a patron. If you are an attractive woman these seem like great places to work. If you're a guy, you'd better be Tom Cruise in Cocktail. At least that seems to be the profile of everyone that works in Balls to the Wall Crazy Superclubs. (love that description!)

Random question. Anyone have experience with getting government rates at Vegas hotels? I'm there for a conference next week, and due to some fuckups I don't have a hotel yet and prices have been shooting up (wtf is going on Monday that prices are so high?). I'm only getting reimbursed $99/night and I'd rather stay somewhere on the southern end as the conference is at the Trop (which is full). Really don't want to spend $90 to stay at Hooters, but everything good that end is way over $99. It's worth a shot so I guess I'll just start calling them all and see if anyone works with me.

If we go back a few years I've got some decent gambling history and used to get decent comp offers, but it's been a long time since I've gambled regularly. Any chance they might look back and factor any of that in?

Booked hooters as my backup option while I tried the rest. Excalibur is certainly an option, though probably not enough of an upgrade over Hooters to take it since Hooters will end up free and Excalibur will end up costing me about $100 for the week. (I could only find Ex at 110 when I searched, plus resort fee). I'd been hoping to stay somewhere pretty nice, but the last second booking has kind of screwed me.

Planet Hollywood actually had good prices for the latter half of the week, so I jumped on that. I'm paying $80, $80, $99 for Wed/Thurs/Fri. They honored the gov rate for Friday, the only one I called who would offer it Friday and one of the few to do it for any night. I'm assuming the music festival is what has Monday hotel prices so ridiculous? I'm paying $99 for Friday (regular rate was only about $130), but they want $350 for Tuesday and are sold out for Monday. Similar issues with other hotels. May just stick with Hooters for the first couple nights.

I'm staying in Vegas for one night (Saturday, ugh) with my fiance in a month, to finish off our national park trip. We don't drink much or gamble, but she's never been there so I want to stay at one of the major hotel/casinos just so she can experience it briefly. We're only looking at the more reasonably priced places.

It looks like the basic rooms for all of these are around the same price:
-Harrah's
-Flamingo GO
-Bally's
-Planet Hollywood
-Monte Carlo
-New York New York
-MGM Grand (slightly more)

All we're really planning to do is walk around and explore the strip, eat at the best buffet we can find, and go to Cirque du Soleil "O" at the Bellagio. Anyone have a recommendation of one over the others? I don't really have a basis of comparison besides the fact that my parents stayed at Monte Carlo once and enjoyed it.

I stayed at MGM for 2 nights just over a week ago and it was nice enough. Clean room, nice bathrooms and all that. It's also at the southern end of the strip so you shouldn't miss much if you just want to walk north. If you're feeling cheap and/or lazy there is a bus service called the DEUCE that runs regularly and stops at a lot of the major casinos on the strip. I think it's $8 for a day pass.

Herbs and Rye is the main dedicated cocktail bar in Vegas, and it's located off strip on W Sahara. Didn't get to go during my last visit, but heard good things.

On-strip, the closest thing to a cocktail bar is Vesper in the Cosmopolitan. It's one of those fully open spaces carved out in the middle of a long walkway, so there's not much to it besides some fancy lounge furniture and the bar itself.

There's also the Mandarin Bar on the 23rd floor of the Mandarin Oriental. Menu's ok, bar is kind of unusual in that it's super narrow, and the bartenders actually use a small converted kitchen for their cocktail station. The rest of the layout is really elegant though, but drinks are priced accordingly as you can imagine.

Get thee to the Laundry Room if you want an awesome cocktail experience. Just off Freemont Street, worth whatever means of transportation it takes to get you there. Text for a reservation and location info. June is the best bartender in Vegas right now, hands down.

The aforementioned Vesper in the Cosmo is also good, but in the Cosmo I prefer the 'secret' in between level of the Chandelier bar. If there happens to be a guy with a mohawk serving, his name is Jason and is really, really good. I seek him out when I am in town, and the secret level has a ton of interesting cocktails and will go deep off menu for you.

Thanks! With the AAA discount it was actually less than the others.

Other question: We need a rental car for our trip, for one week. We need to return it to Vegas, but we can pick it up from either Phoenix or Vegas since we didn't book our flights yet. The best Vegas to Vegas prices I'm seeing are:

-E-Z Rent-a-car $14/day
-Payless $15/day
-Budget $27/day
-Alamo $28/day
All with +$100 in fees.

Phoenix to Vegas prices are all absurd, well over $100/day. Vegas to Phoenix is best, but that unfortunately won't work since I failed to check earlier in the process.

Anyway, the first two have good prices, but more than a few terrible reviews online. Does anyone have experience with them? Limited searching shows Alamo with the best reviews, so I'll go with them if the cheaper ones aren't worth the risk, but the more than $100 savings sure would be nice.

Most car rental companies have a "loyalty" program of some sort. Just sign up for membership online ahead of time.

With my Budget card I paid 83 dollars for a 3 day rental picking up at McCarran. The biggest hassle with LAS rental cars is that you have to take a bus to the "rental car center" and then go wait in line. It's not terrible but probably adds 10-15 minutes to the process than I've experienced with other airports.

My car was Hyundai Sonnata with under 10K miles. I was actually impressed by it.
