for real i've never understood how the guy has the kind of critical respect that he does. everyone talks about how the downward spiral is some kind of darkly emotional masterpiece but under the cool production it's all the same kind of teenagery gunk that bands like linkin park edgier than that but i can't think of any good examples right now because i don't listen to what i'm thinking of get poo poo for.

I think the lyrics on TDS get pretty close to being good but they're definitely in the angsty/awkward territory. the production just makes up for it. i think he's a really talented producer/musician/whatever and his voice is even pretty good but man those lyrics

honestly though there are very few contemporary artists who don't write poo poo lyrics.

summarize both why i enjoyed NIN 14 years ago, and why i really don't bother listening to any of trent's poo poo anymore

year zero was ok and i agreed with the sentiment of the album but i think two decades of writing poo poo angst teen lyrics has made his mind broken

i happen to enjoy the teen angst lyrics, but trent sings with conviction so that helps.

you cant gently caress with his production skills for sure. tds is one of those records where you hear it without the eq and dynamics fuckery of tv and radio for the first time and its like #whoa #wow

trent reznor is in my good book because the soundtrack he put together for "natural born killers" was excellent

hoping that the 1492 soundtrack is as good as it's supposed to be because direct and the city (especially direct) are just terrible

i didn't like it very much

albedo 0.39, spiral, the blade runner soundtrack (obviously), soil festivities (kinda new agey but still good especially if i'm reading), and mask are my vangelis of choice at the moment and i'm looking forward to hearing earth, heaven and hell, the 1492 soundtrack, and el greco next

huh

this "pisces iscariot" thing is v. nice. modest and un-irritating like gish but with pretty production like siamese dream. of course since the songs are all b-sides nothing really stands out ("starla" would if anything actually happened in its autopilot ending jam) but they're diverse and pleasant and it's nice to hear billy corgan lay off the whining and tantrums for a change

6/10 would listen again :)

Listen for the chicago el train sounds bleeding through on Landslide (I think it is)

pisces is a loving gorgeous record and it is no coincidence that the best 90s pumpkins album is b-sides and castoffs, much like the best nirvana album was b-sides and castoffs

also i just realized that the concept of b-sides being like a little venue to put out interesting/weird/less common tracks is likely dead and has been replaced by remixes. blah
