Thanks to this thread I decided to check out Dredd, which I had avoided due to it being a remake of an awful, awful movie. Perhaps it was the absence of Rob Schneider but I really enjoyed it. If you've avoided the remake due to the (admittedly dumb) source material, you should check it out if you like 90's action flicks. It's good dumb fun. Also, I finally got around to watching Touching the Void, the mountaineering documentary that's been recommended a billion times in this thread and various iterations of the Everest thread in GBS. As expected it was absolutely fantastic. If you have any interest in mountaineering or harrowing survival stories you should definitely check it out. Finally, recently I watched The Secret of Kells, a wonderfully imaginative animated film about a monastery besieged by Vikings. If you enjoy animated films you should definitely check this one out, as the art style is unique and refreshing. For a kids' movie the story is pretty solid, even bordering on dark at times. It's good dumb fun. Darn right it is. It felt somewhere between Die Hard and Blade Runner. I wouldn't mind if dumb action flicks like this come back in style for a while. I'm often over-critical of movies; but if it starts with "your mission is to go gently caress poo poo up and kill drug dealers", I'm good to go.

What this guy said, but with more vulgarity. I'll recommend American Mary as a gory timewaster that's not at all good, but a million times better than most horror on Instant. Warning: lots of body horror.

It was a sad day when movie companies realized more money could be made marketing poo poo to kids than messing with their minds and/or freaking the poo poo out of them  Secret of NIMH, Dark Crystal, Watership Down, Watcher in the Woods, the original Bakshi Lord of the Rings, all of these things were disturbing as hell when I was a kid. Thankfully they'll all be around in one digital format or another to mess with my kids' heads!

I just watched Event Horizon for the first time. Not a great movie, but worth watching for the scenes when poo poo starts going bananas. Basically, I feel like it's a movie that's been done better, and for the most part it was strangely boring, but I'll still give it a recommend based on crazy demonic Sam Neill and a lot of the gorier scenes are over the top in that Paul W.S. Anderson way that's usually entertaining.

The Thing is a movie you should watch if you like Event Horizon. Same concept where it is set in a very isolated place and the protagonists don't understand what is happening, but John Carpenter is a better horror director.

I hate to go slapstick on your asses but The Dictator is so funny, I actually inhaled my vodka and iced tea during one scene and I had to blow vodka iced tea out of my nose. Also seconding Dredd, and Sunshine, even though it's not on Netflix.

Wicked Attraction probably isn't a good show but the crimes are interesting. The reenactments take up more time with the actors getting more lines, and it's so bad. Love it.

The final season of Fringe is up. I just got through the first 4 seasons a few weeks ago, which were pretty good. unfortunately after only watching one episode, the story for season 5 seems like it is going to be pretty bad.

It really destroyed the "found footage" aspect for me.It's been on Netflix for a while, and it didn't get good reviews, but I like Fourth Kind  Aliens in general scare me and it's way better when they don't actually show the monsters in a movie.
