Congratulations to Russia for having the courage and boldness to directly explore the role of natural selection in a statistically valid, large population of Homo sapiens! I look forward to the published results when ready, especially the change in allele frequencies associated with the interaction term between alcohol consumption (way to get that variance really broad, and redefine "extreme"!) and risk-taking behaviour.

And video too! Most of the buildings make sense, since they do have maintenance access. Not so sure how they got on top of the Park Pobedy spire.

Stephen Shore is giving a lecture at Brown next week if anyone in the area is interested. I've been going a little stir crazy photographing the same spots at home, so I figure a road trip is in order.

Those Russian pictures seem to get coverage every six months or so. I guess it's somewhat refreshing to see that at least some of them aren't smears on the pavement now, seeing as I recognise a few names.

One of my friends is adjuncting for an English department and got her first batch of papers in from students. First line of the first paper: "For thousands of years individuals have been taking photographs."

Reichstag posted:Those are pretty boring photos and pretty normal looking dudes. To be fair, there's an accompanying post on reddit that's pretty pretentious. (Maybe a 6/10 in the grand scheme of things, but it's still pretty ) They had a kickstarter, which really tempts me to try and crowdsource funding for my month-long solo motorbike trip in Japan next summer.

At least they'll have money for when one of them crashes with only a t-shirt and jeans on.

While I'm mildly annoyed that people are now using kickstarter to fund vacations the photoset had its moments, I'm not American though, so it might just be the novelty of some of the settings. One or two of the street photos were nice too. Boring is a relative concept I guess.

Some of the pictures are decent and maybe even good, but a lot are pretty cringe worthy. I think it's a lot of "guy with a camera who doesn't know what he's doing relying on filters to make stuff interesting."

I've got a ton of high-urgency things to work on at work, I'm sitting on a couple of thousand shots I should really go through, edit, and upload for basically nobody to look at, and there are all sorts of other things going on in my life right now. So of course I want to run a print-exchange here, because it seems like it's been a while. Should I distract myself by herding you guys into sending each other pictures? Any interest at this time? I'm thinking about a before-christmas (maybe early December) deadline, because you could send the test-prints and other B-sides to goons before printing the Good Stuff for family and friends.

I know in the past it has been run around Christmas. I think it would be better if it was before or after, people are understandably busy around that time of year. I would be interested, it is always cool to get some prints.

This is pretty meta: http://www.flickr.com/groups/landscapesoflossantos/pool/with/9956259035/#photo_9956259035 People are using the screenshot feature in GTA V to make "photos". Some of them are quite thoughtfully composed, given the limitations (and horrible pseudovignetting).

That's kind of been a trend in games for a few years now.. the Forza series has a pretty great camera mode. The Halo series has been doing more and more of that with each iteration as well. I know there's been others but that's just what's coming to mind at the moment. Ignoring composition because everyone who plays Forza wants to get a sweet shot of themselves drifting, look at the quality of the images the game can produce. Some of them can be genuinely hard to identify as coming from a game. http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=forza%204 I think GTA V is notable because the game looks absolutely stunning, and it's meant to look like the real world. I think going through it as a photographer is not a bad way to play it, at all.

I spend almost as much time taking pictures of myself in Shift 2 as actually racing. Every game needs a photo mode. Every game.
