Oh this thread is back. Thanks for reminding me about Major Tom's Endless Conflict. The interlude in Anime is the Ties that Bind us that dealt with that gundamn disaster was the best part. Needless to say, I'll be watching this with great interest. Digging is going to be messy though, I don't like diving into their forums. Still, McFatass does like to come by my youtube account every so often and rant about the day of reckoning when he brings down Something Awful.

Also, NaNoWriMo is on the horizon for November. Prepare for the deluge of delusional tropers trying to get their half baked Evangelion fanfics published.

Buglord

quote:

Ok guys I've come up with the basic ideas for a cyberpunk-ish world and am trying to fill in the gaps but there are a few things I'm not sure about.
There is no need for me to give you a full history of the setting but I'll give a quick description of how it is now so you can see how everything fits together.
Humans live in giant walled cities connected by a network of trains (and for the very wealthy aircraft) however each city is self sufficient and most people never leave their city. While in the future the setting is still reminiscent of modern society. The structure of society has changed but people still have similar values and technology while advanced isn't technology still fills a similar role as it does today. Think 20-30 years in the future with regards to technology- technology can still do the same basic things just better. There are a number of megacorporations which have presence the majority of the cities. Although they all cover a wide range of industries they have different strengths and weakness. They wield a lot of power but they aren't in control and have to follow the laws of the city (although their influence allows a little bending). Other factions within the city are the police (who are strict and oppressive in their attempt to reduce the high crime rate but aren't truly bad) and rebel/crime groups who want to alter the power balance.
My problems:
I want the megacorps to not only fight economically but to also have violent clashes between teams of enforcers (and sometimes the police), however they are still bound by the law of the city. I can't think of a way for them to get away with regularly committing violent attacks, especially against the police. I can't think of a reason why the average person who is aware of these fights (although they may not have seen one themselves) would tolerate the behaviour.
On a similar note what reasons could the megacorps have to create and train groups of soldiers and send them out against each other. Many corps use modified humans (with bionics or bioengineering) so they would be expensive to create.
How can I portray the police as a dangerous force to reckon with and keep them from appearing evil? They are strict and willing to resort to serious violence but in end their motives good (more or less).
To make the other aspects work how oppressed should I make the normal people? Life should be hard with few opportunities but I don't want the whole population perpetually miserable.

"I literally cannot figure out basic aspects of my story" is a major theme in World Building.

quote:

I have a story in draft form which is historical fantasy focusing on a conflict similar to the ones in all those books and movies where the hero joins the French Foreign Legion and finds himself digging trenches and fighting hostile natives in the middle of the desert. So, not exactly "Lawrence of Arabia". More like Beau Geste.
My protagonist's a native in a fantasy North African country (think Algeria or Morocco) and my plan is that as well as fighting legionnaires he's going to come up against legendary creatures such as rocs and ghuls from the Arabian Nights. And of course, there's the flying carpets, beautiful female dancers (and maybe some male dancers- why are all fictional Arab court dancers women?), powerful kings (or local sheikhs), sorcerors and magical flying wooden horses- and genuinely magical living horses.
Anyone have suggestions on how to flesh this setting out? For example, might flying carpets and magical, genetically modified (and wooden) flying horses (guerrillas) compete with steam-powered (through solar power)dirigibles and guns and other weapons powered by elemental magic? (colonial military forces)

You are not in control here, you are part of a larger whole. In order to write properly, people need to know how everything works. Can you imagine trying to talk about symbolism in Heart of Darkness without knowing anything about it?
Furthermore, without explicit justifications, people run the risk of using what they claim are valid reasons to get around stuff they technically shouldn't. There's nothing to stop somebody from pulling an Everything-Proof Shield from out of their rear end and forcing people to accept it because there's a good reason for it in their work.
Which it kind of feels like you're doing here. "Yes, there's a legitimate reason the Core's anti-magic didn't affect Tanis's technically-not magic, and yes, there's a legitimate reason Alice can't feel Valerion's technically-not magic. But, no, you can't hear it. It's a secret."

To be fair, maybe the point he was trying to make is that nobody in the setting thinks about the soul-power element, not that he personally didn't think about it? Still, that's a hell of a detail to establish and not do anything with, and I'm not surprised they're that sloppy. The worst thing about Writers Block is that in the entire list of stupid threads, not once have they got one called "What are your story's themes?"

In fact, googling "TV tropes theme" gives you one page titled "Central Theme" which just lists the themes of the various items they have a page for once in like three words and without any discussion or exploration whatsoever, and the rest is about theme tunes or theme naming.

It really hits home the idea that Tropers have no idea what a book, a TV show, a movie, or even a non-pornographic anime is meant to do.

I will view enough of the series to get a feel, and if I am still undecided then, we will see where to go from there.

Naturally everybody involved needs to watch all episodes of the anime in order to cast judgement on whether or not the anime that involves little boys and naked women (that is also marketed toward grown men instead of kids) needs to be wiped from the site. The terrifying pervert quotient goes up and down according to outside pressures, it seems, but nothing is ever going to undo the horrible Tropiness of it. I looked at their 'YKTTW' sections (I figure if I suffer enough in this life, maybe I'll be reborn as somebody who never heard of TVTropes). 'YKTTW' stands for 'You Know, That Thing Where...' - a place where people are proposing new tropes to add to the ever-metastasizing mass.

Here we have:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=tiv83vtq94e73o3r3sjiu463

quote:

Longer Than Life Sentence
A criminal get sentenced to prison terms going beyond a normal life expectancy

It's a thing that happens! So it's a trope!

quote:

In Malcolm X the main character's friend, Shorty, faints because he think he will be victim of this trope.
Malcolm X (voiceover): Shorty thought he [the judge] hit us with 114 years, until I explained "concurrently." It meant a minimum sentence of 10 years hard labor at the Charlestown State Prison.

That's right, folks: characters based on real-life people are afraid of fictional tropes getting them! It's nothing to do with systemic prejudice or messed-up legal systems: it's the TROPES that get you!

Plus, can anyone figure out their maths?

quote:

In Oz, Chris Keller is sentenced to 88 years with parole accessible in 50 before being sentenced to death, sentence overturned eventually.
Subverted with Omar White: while he is sentenced to 75 years, he's up for parole in 20.

Apparently sentencing an adult man to 88 years is troping longer than life, but 75 years is subverting longer than life.

Or we have this new proposal:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=f168v1tp2sf5fotjwue0s148

quote:

Jury and Witness Tampering
A witness or jury member is interfered with by the defendants or their representatives.

...So, 'Jury Tampering' is an offence that's on the statutes. 'Witness Tampering' is an offence that's on the statutes. Those are the phrases on the books, it's clear to everybody what they mean - and yet somehow, this needs to be turned into a trope? This isn't just unoriginal or :spergin:, it's copy-pasting reality.

It's that that really scares me about TVTropes. They seem to be on a quest to hunt down every last trace of reality and trap it on a trope page until actual living goes extinct. They make me want to call in the reality conservationists.

quote:

You know, if it actually were trying to be a resource for writers, that wouldn't be the worst thing. 'Figuring out your story's themes' before you've got a first draft written is frequently a fast track to heavy-handed, imaginatively limited writing. But of course, this is TVTropes, so 'heavy-handed and imaginatively limited' are clearly not things to avoid. I suspect it just doesn't fit into their (fuckawful) format.

This isn't quite the height of stupidity that happens in Writer's Block, but it's still certainly something; both for the OP and for the reactions... (As a video game, no idea how that's supposed to work.) He manages to get a knee-jerk anti-feminist response from someone who was thumped, a fairly reasonable "uh, this is kinda ridiculous" reaction from some other people, and, most damningly for TVTropes, the site's resident feminist comes in and defends him.

And yet it's still better than 90% of Writer's Block threads.

Quick note: The protagonist is listed as "close to 5,000 days old," which I assume is the author's "clever" way of disguising the fact that he's written a weirdo Bioshock/Tomb Raider mashup rape-fantasy about a 13 year old girl. As to why it's a video-game, I can only assume this is so he can point to lack of funding/coders/ willing publishers/anything other than his own laziness as it continues to languish as a vague synopsis rather than a completed work.

Many works feature sniper rifles, and their featuring of sniper rifles gives us keen insight into the nature of their story of and the influences the artist is drawing from because: video games, judging by the size of that section.

I'm sure I've brought this up in one of the prior threads, but it is still completely loving stupid.

Sniper rifles: truly, a critical literary trope :eng101:

Man, one of the dumbest tropes I've seen is probably Stop Having Fun Guys, because Tropers go all over the loving internet and (ironically) whine about how people who aren't "casual" players all do "stop having fun guy" poo poo.

Oh, poo poo, thank you for posting this. I remember that being one of the reasons I decided to post this, but when it came time to actually describe the thread, that was just overshadowed by everything else and I forgot to mention it. When pedophilia isn't the worst part of a Writer's Block thread, you know you're in for some deep poo poo.

I remember when one of the biggest controversies on TVTropes was whether this should become "Stop Having Fun, Guys" or "Stop Having Fun" Guys when they added punctuation to titles. Ah, more innocent days.

Stupid, but probably inevitable. As their examples show, they don't distinguish between video game storytelling and storytelling in books, films and TV, which is pretty stupid right there, but you can also see that they don't understand the most important thing about video game storytelling: you have to have a sensible design or the content will be a mess.

Because the thing is, TVTropes isn't just badly coded: its whole concept is badly designed. On the one hand, it's a 'resource,' :airquote: but on the other hand, it's a lifestyle, a hobby, and someone who really wants to be part of it will end up feeling like they need to make their own page. And there's no limit to who can contribute, and no notability controls for what's included, and no robust commentary allowed to shoot down trivial ideas. So it expands and expands...

Except that tropes are, by their nature, supposed to be reductive. They're supposed to be that 'only six stories in the world', stripped-down, simplified repeating patterns of fiction - and by that definition, they ought to be loving finite.

Put together a participatory community dedicated to endless tinkering and expansion, and a remit to 'document' :airquote: something that by its nature is supposed to be a breaking-down rather than a branching-out, and the whole place was built to go mad.

I'm totally not from BTL, and while no one really cares if you make fun of -them-, calling -them- pedophiles isn't a place you want to go. -They- aren't, which is plain to see if if you take a cursory glance around -their- website or -their- rules ("We have no tolerance for pedoshit. None. Get it away. If you have pedophilic thoughts, get off the Internet and get some help. We hope you succeed and wish you luck, but we can't help you."), and the last time sperglords like Volume tried to "collect evidence" to prove -they- were pedos you guys ended up accusing someone who had actually been molested as a child. Just a heads up.

No one cares. No one cares how much of a good idea TvTropes is. No one cares how good it used to be. We don't care if you were/are "one of the good ones." If are a troper, don't try to "befriend the goons" to try to get us to stop making fun of you. Join SA if you want, just don't make this a huge ex-troper circlejerk.

Hey, just trying to tell you guys that calling pedo baselessly doesn't lead anywhere good, which I think would be common sense. But feel free to completely disregard my point :allears:

I'm sorry your site full of uncreative idiots was called a pedo. I hope you can heal from this assault on your e-honor. Please do not challenge us to an e-duel.
