Oh this thread is back. Thanks for reminding me about Major Tom's Endless Conflict. The interlude in Anime is the Ties that Bind us that dealt with that gundamn disaster was the best part. Needless to say, I'll be watching this with great interest. Digging is going to be messy though, I don't like diving into their forums. It just dawned on me that you guys might have been talking about the other TvTropes spin-off, IJBM. These are the guys that were having lolicon roleplaying sessions and stuff that was posted about in the second TvT mock thread. At first glance, it just seems filled to the brim with insanely idiotic threads like "When something you think is not as good gets all the attention" and another thread questioning why homes have front doors. However, if you use the search function and type in "lolicon" you... Get poo poo   like this. and when peoples call them out on it, they get indignant. In the second thread, people posted screenshots of these guys roleplaying a little girl from an anime having sex with her teacher, but I can't be bothered to go searching for something like that or else I'd tear my hair out.

The worst thing about Writers Block is that in the entire list of stupid threads, not once have they got one called "What are your story's themes?" In fact, googling "TV tropes theme" gives you one page titled "Central Theme" which just lists the themes of the various items they have a page for once in like three words and without any discussion or exploration whatsoever, and the rest is about theme tunes or theme naming. It really hits home the idea that Tropers have no idea what a book, a TV show, a movie, or even a non-pornographic anime is meant to do.

As their examples show, they don't distinguish between video game storytelling and storytelling in books, films and TV, which is pretty stupid right there, but you can also see that they don't understand the most important thing about video game storytelling: you have to have a sensible design or the content will be a mess. Because the thing is, TVTropes isn't just badly coded: its whole concept is badly designed. On the one hand, it's a 'resource,'  but on the other hand, it's a lifestyle, a hobby, and someone who really wants to be part of it will end up feeling like they need to make their own page. And there's no limit to who can contribute, and no notability controls for what's included, and no robust commentary allowed to shoot down trivial ideas. So it expands and expands...Except that tropes are, by their nature, supposed to be reductive. They're supposed to be that 'only six stories in the world', stripped-down, simplified repeating patterns of fiction - and by that definition, they ought to be loving finite. Put together a participatory community dedicated to endless tinkering and expansion, and a remit to 'document' something that by its nature is supposed to be a breaking-down rather than a branching-out, and the whole place was built to go mad.
