I've been really into Mastodon, particularly stuff like Blood Mountain through The Hunter but I enjoy stuff like Remission as well. What are some more bands that have heavy parts as well as psychadelic/progressive/melodic sections? Nothing too technical, though, I tend to hate stuff like Dream Theater.

If you like Remission-era Mastodon, Neurosis is an absolute must. They are by far the biggest influence on Mastodon's early work as well as a ton of other bands. Scott Kelly also contributed vocals to Crack the Skye and Aqua Dementia.

I already knew about Baroness but Kylesa and Black Tusk are both great. Neurosis I also knew about but hadn't listened to in ages. It's a good jumping off point, thanks a lot!

The first 2 or 3 Isis albums are good, though after that I think they just became pretty generic alt-metal. Oh, and Giant Squid might be up your alley. Glad I noticed this before I posted a new thread... I have a bit of a problem. I've whittled down my musical interests to one or two major types, and am having an incredibly difficult time finding more songs/artists to listen to. At the moment, I'm trying to find some more female vocal trance, but I'm apparently incredibly picky, since most of what I come across doesn't work for me at all. Here are a couple I've found recently that are exactly what I like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDXX3Xz9nWk&t=80s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfdybwMvHgo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cVeg61OpZs&t=136s Basically a slow to mid-tempo beat, and soothing female vocals taking center stage. Most of what I come across is too... bouncy, for lack of a better word. I really prefer songs I can relax to. If anyone can come up with either artists, or individual songs, I'd hugely appreciate it. Thanks!

So, I'd call that ambient trance or even just plain ambient, rather than trance. You can try Holden and Thompson, but most of their stuff (and especially remixes -- look for original mixes) will be, like you said, bouncier / higher bpm. I'm not too familiar with ambient trance and what ambient I listen to, I prefer vocal-less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpUMAjfvlGA&t=90s

I'm looking for the filthiest music you can possibly imagine. It's gotta be as clever as it is gauche, though. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg5TYH9tV_w I'm concerned more with subject than genre, but the more unexpected the better.

Kind of a vague description, but I'm looking for some more stuff that blends any combinations of soul, jazz, funk, hip hop, and rock. I've been listening to a lot of Roots, Aloe Blacc, TV on the Radio, The Heavy, and Janelle Monae recently and I'm not sure where else really look for it. I know it's kind of a wide range of artists there, but hopefully that means there's tons of stuff I haven't found yet.

I'm looking for some new calm, melancholy, instrumental music to add to my collection. Neoclassical, classical, whatever really. I've listened to a lot of orchestral music lately, so I'd love to hear something a little more low key. A quartet or something, I don't know. Something like: Ólafur Arnalds Jóhann Jóhannsson Dario Marianelli Greg Haines Chopin Ludovico Einaudi Some examples of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJM6ufyH1lc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDFasBHOnOU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLFd04IzTCs Black Griffon fucked around with this message at 23:25 on Sep 15, 2013 |

This might sound silly, but give it a chance: The soundtrack to Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. It's all strings, very calm and melancholy most of the time, and only gets up to "slightly jumpy" on a couple tracks. The main theme especially is just beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWjbWuXZA5w

I'm looking for something similar to this, it's the closing track on The Apples in Stereo album Travelers in Space and Time, Time Pilot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bj_T0HfI5w I like The Apples in Stereo, but most of the other tracks are a lot more poppy. This one is all spacey, with like trippy background stuff. So, I'm looking for stuff that's like that just maybe whole albums and not just one track.

I'm looking for two things: Any 80s synthy stuff; it doesn't have to be from the real 80s. John Carpenter music score kind of stuff; anything with that feel to it. I'm totally cool with movie soundtracks and the like, and yes, I do have the Blood Dragon soundtrack - which is awesome. Second is a sort of re-request: Spaghetti Western style music, crossed with other genres - from experimental to heavy. Last time I got recommended to Monkey3's remixes of some classics and have listened to the majority of their stuff frequently since, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try again almost a year later!

Double requests: 1.) Modern, "finger picky" guitar. Ideally I'm looking for stuff in the folk/has vocals vein like Shakey Graves, but recently I've had the same itch scratched with James Blackshaw. I've already heard most of the goth-country scene and most of it doesn't do anything for me. I've also heard of the gods of fingerpicking like Fahey, Rose, et al. 2.) "Weird" classical guitar, like The Last Mariachi by Akira Yamaoka and Satanique Samba Trio

I recommend the wonderfully dramatically titled album "Departure from the Northern Wasteland." It's like John Carpenter movie music, but a lot better IMO. Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCBlQaZxOc4&t=360s (jumps to 6:00, but this whole track is really solid) As a bonus nerd-fact, same guy did the Baldur's Gate soundtrack (though that one is not synthy at all) Also check out Cluster - they go between that kind of synthy music, and spaced out ambient stuff. The only album I know is Grosses Wasser, but I recommend it. Also maybe earlier Jean-Michel Jarre? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DDEl7JnWvo Long story short, a lot of German and sometimes French electronica from the 70s is exactly what you're looking for.
