Well I've gotten a bit further into Umineko past where this goat dude appears out of nowhere and has a sword/magic blade fight with Kanon. Yeah, I'm not sure what exactly was going on there but it was awesome anyway even if it made no sense how Kanon magically teleported behind the guy. It almost makes me want to watch that scene in the anime just because it would be so much better animated.

I'm in the minority but I rather enjoyed the side routes since it felt like I was reading something interesting about them instead of the identical routes from the main lines. Like was mentioned, if you are enjoying yourself go for it. There no crazy rear end pay off but it's cool to see their 'real' personalities and conflicts reflected in the later stories.

Kanon (early EP2 spoilers) pulling a sword from nowhere is basically when all hell starts going loose. Still, don't be discouraged by all the magic flying everywhere; there's still a mystery to solve after all.

It'd need to be like, 100 episodes. 50 for Umineko, and 50 for Chiru. That's the only way that I could see them faithfully and properly adapting the series. Of course, the biggest sin DEEN committed was wasting the VNs soundtrack. Umineko has arguably the single greatest soundtrack of any Visual Novel, and yet DEEN just wasted it.

So I just started Sharin no Kuni. I may have missed the thread actually talking about the game, but I'm a little bit in and kind of confused about the protagonist. He passingly mentioned having classes to rewrite his personality and the like but is there a reason he acts the way he does? Is it addressed, or just an attempt to break him away from the usual protagonist mold?

I don't know how far in you are but I think this is only really spoilery for the first flashback at the end of the prologue chapter. Kenichi's basically been raised by a hippie, his half-sister (who molested him), and Houzuki. The story goes into some depth about it, but all his parental figures have been weirdos or assholes. He's also been through some rough poo poo that separated him from his best friends and now he has to pretend he's a different person now that he's back around them.

Oh god, now you've reminded me. My first exposure to the anime was from a guy who'd never read the VN and was utterly baffled why people thought Umineko had a good soundtrack. Basically nothing DEEN could have done was worse than killing one of the series' main selling points like that. Though, now that I think about it, is it possible the problem was copyright? There's about a dozen different composers that worked on Umineko's soundtrack, so I guess it's conceivable it was a wonky situation trying to license them for an adaptation.

While I preferred the original, it was still far better than the stuff I remember being played.

Yeah, I've been warned to stay clear of it. How did they botch the soundtrack specifically? Threw most/all of it out and replaced it with their own versions that sucked? Misused the tracks very inappropriately like having Goldenslaughter play once in an insignificant scene? I'm curious to know.

They would pick a few songs and repeat them constantly (suspicion was the one I remembered the most) regardless of whether they were appropriate or not while either using the more famous tracks only once (happiness of marionette) or not at all (dreamend discharger). As mentioned previously, the latter one there is especially silly because they bothered to remix it and put it on the anime OST.

I don't know guys Higurashi was pretty bad and should be ignored just as much.

Higurashi's anime is oooooooooookay, in the sense that the first two chapters in the VN have pacing problems and thus should have been cut down in the first place and the narrative/mystery isn't as reliant upon a huge number of pieces of information to function (it's basically impossible to debate the mystery in Umineko without falling back on VN-only info). So, in that sense it sort of works on its own. I know I watched the anime first and liked it well enough. But it's assuredly incredibly flawed, with mediocre music (although arguably better than the first four VN chapters) and horrendous animation. And while the first few chapters are sort of fine with being cut up, the cuts to the answer arcs were quite tragic and really hurt the story in several places. All told, I can't in good faith recommend the Higurashi anime because of these reasons. Conversely, I can't think of anything the Umineko anime brought to the table. I'm not even going to go with the voices, as it's not what I would call a great performance (a completely miscast Ami Koshimizu, Yui Horie dials up the annoying far too strongly, etc). It's arguably even worse in the PS3 games, where you have Yukari Tamura just sleepwalk through her lines. Nate RFB fucked around with this message at 18:09 on Sep 18, 2013 |

Could this mean a price cut as well? Hard to expect MangaGamer to get away with its dumb prices for a VN on Steam. I'll almost certainly buy it again, though. Maybe this gets the community off its rear end to update the patches. Probably too much to ask for MG to port it over into the Nscripter engine at the same time, I suppose?

Introduced a friend to Muv Luv. His previous experience with VNs a couple porn games, told him about FSN and he did Fate route (which he liked), and tried UBW but stopped because didn't like the rehashing of explanations in the beginning (Nasu being ) so he went for ML. In any case, I asked where he was in Alternative and we fired up a skype call and talked a bit about VNs and how pleasantly surprised, how he liked the Extra humor and the thematic transitions the series does, compared the way exposition is delivered with FSN, and I just kept hearing in afterwards. He's a bit confused when Code 991 happens but gets really into it when Marimo comes to cheer up Takeru. And then the magic happened. "No... no, no, no, no... no... no... NO! ...I need a drink, I'll be right back."

Uminenko ch 3 random musings Dere-Beatrice is truly the most powerful being yet. I never expected this development when I started this chapter. Siesta Sister 45 strongly resembles Rimi from Chaos;Head, with the strawberry pink twin tailed hair and she even has the saluting thing. Battler's voice actor still cannot even come close to crying convincingly. It's quite hilarious. "The three of as are now the only adults" Do they not recognize Nanjo as an adult? Hey Battler, even though you're being extremely stubborn about this but considering your stance that magic doesn't exist, you probably shouldn't ask a witch to freaking summon a ghost for your defense. I tried organizing something before, but the text hooker I was using would copy the lines wrong or duplicate them and I couldn't get it to work out.
