Oh my god why didn't anyone tell me Twin Peaks features David Duchovny in full drag as a transgender FBI agent?? That was the most delightful surprise television has thrown at me for a while.

The only huge black mark on his resume is Prince of Persia, and that's more of Disney's fault than anything (casting a Jewish man with Swedish heritage as a "Prince of Persia" is hilarious). Netflix has been recommending me Butter for months and I've always been like "...no thanks" but holy poo poo was that a mistake, it's an amazing hilarious film. It's kind of like a bigger scale Christopher Guest movie, and Ty Burrell is absolutely wonderful. Apparently it got largely negative reviews which confuses the hell out of me.

An Officer And A Gentleman is back up. Worth it for Lou Gossett Jr.'s performance alone as the Marine Drill Instructor in charge of the officer candidates, one of the truly great roles where hamming it up and chewing all scenery doesn't detract from the role one bit, in fact the nature of the role pretty much demands it. If you've never seen it I think it's well worth a watch, both because it's a really good film in my opinion, and you will "get" a lot of cultural references that sprang from it ("I GOT NOWHERE ELSE TO GO", the scene at the end of that Simpsons episode where Homer carries Marge out of the nuclear plant etc.) A bit chick flicky but not too much at all and plenty of boot camp drama to make sure it doesn't get overwhelmed by the romance aspect. For me it doesn't have a dated "80's movie" feel at all compared to other films of the time (early 80's).

The way it ends is loving insane and I would love to see it get resolved (I know Fire Walk With Me is supposed to tie up some lose ends, but that's not on Netflix AFAIK).

Fire Walk With Me gives you some resolution, but it may not be the resolution you're hoping for. It's great regardless though. I say give it some time and watch it on it's own terms divorced from the series finale. Sadly it was the first part of a planned trilogy that would have given us more info about what happens to Coop after the finale but when it bombed at the box office the sequels were canned.

Or does he get out, and just sort of take over someone else (and then we're faced with ...of SCIENCE!'s situation as well). More interesting to me, but perhaps the second message might be a bit too deep for most movie goers. I dunno, I just really like good open-ended movie endings (like Inception).

They just put Side Effects up, I really recommend it. It definitely becomes a very different movie in the second half, but I for one still thoroughly enjoyed it. Jude Law and Rooney Mara both give great performances. Also it's GORGEOUS.

It's basically a modern film noir with amazing digital cinematography and performances. It's ever so slow to start but once it gets going, it's incredible.

The first few episodes were a challenge; while they set the tone very well, they still focused too much on the bereaved parents. I understand that we're meant to see their grief, but it was just too much. I physically felt uncomfortable watching them and nearly gave up on the show right then. Luckily they get more or less ignored soon after, and the show starts getting awesome. And then when the dad jumps onto Lauras coffin as it's descending into the grave, my wife and I just burst out laughing... But I think we were supposed to find that funny?  I don't know. It's just so over the top, but I can't get enough.

For all intents and purposes, the pilot of Twin Peaks is a movie. And yes, the show is a soap opera with (ostensibly) a murder mystery as its core plot.

I would have enjoyed Side Effects a hell of a lot more if the movie had made it totally ambiguous whether or not Emily was a scheming murderer or just a victim of Dr. Banks, and then ended there. I'd still recommend it as being pretty entertaining.
