Kevyn posted:MTV was awesome in the early-mid 90's. Especially that summer they had the Mighty Beach House Tiki God do all their bumpers. The Mtv Beach House Summer I remember most vividly had a few bumpers where the at-the-time state-of-the-art 3D avatars of the VJs were inviting viewers to join them all in some kind of "virtual reality" chatroom. My household didn't have the Internet yet and I just thought it looked like the coolest thing. And the Onion AV Club had a great article about Jesse Camp as part of My World of Flops. My college buddies and I always referred to the guy as "Human Jar-Jar", which in hindsight was an extremely '90s put-down.

SomeJazzyRat posted:To go back to the mallchat, although it is currently undergoing renovations to look more modern, the West Edmonton Mall has (and for the most part still does) look very 90's. I wanted to go there since I read about it in the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records (featuring a really neat lenticular cover). A couple of weeks ago, after waiting 15 years, I finally went. The mall was constructed in 4 "phases". I entered from phase 1, which was built in the 80's, and still mostly looks like it (I was only born in '89, but I can remember the stores of the early-to-mid 90's pretty well, and the way phase 1 looks was outdated even at that time). However, phase 2, which contains the amusement park, feels a lot more 90's. Especially the amusement park. The garishness, the mascots...totally over-the-top. Great triple-loop rollercoaster, BTW! Phase 3 has the waterpark and an artificial lake, where you could once take a ride in real minisubs. Sadly, they were shut down due to aging/costly upkeep in 2005, and scrapped last year. The massive waterpark has clearly been renovated since it was built. Clean, fairly modern, and just plain beautiful. I could spend days in there... Phase 4 was built in the mid-90's, and still has the look. Black tiling, neon highlights, a noisy movie theater/video arcade, and the Fantasyland theme hotel. The food court at this end of the mall is being refitted, but you can still see the remnants of the 90's. Neon, mirrored surfaces, some faux ancient Roman/Greek touches... I recommend checking out the mall if megaprojects are your thing. That stuff looks similar to Gak Foam, the smell of which nearly made me throw up (really). Anyway, the reason I was reading this thread just now was to see if anyone had mentioned that there is an officially-sanctioned movement to bring back my second-favorite TV show of the 90's (#1 = The Electric Playground): ReBoot! http://www.bringbackreboot.com/ Rainmaker, the license holder, is selling T-shirts to gauge fan support. The drive ends October 1st, so get in on it!!! (And sign up for the newsletter! )

Holy poo poo.quote:Rainmaker Entertainment has just announced the re-birth of Mainframe Entertainment, the folks responsible for ReBoot. And with this newly revamped division of television entertainment comes a brand new ReBoot on television.

VANCOUVER, BC (September 30, 2013) – A renowned global animation brand is about to be re-booted. Reflecting the company’s commitment to the production of animated programming for television, Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. has named its television division Mainframe Entertainment. In conjunction with the re-birth of Mainframe Entertainment, a name celebrated for its pioneering achievements in computer-animated television, the company has unveiled the first two series in development: an all-new version of the popular ReBoot franchise and Tiger’s Apprentice, a CGI animated series based on the trilogy of young adult novels written by award-winning author Laurence Yep. The reimagining of the venerable ReBoot series comes just in time for its 20th anniversary. Making its debut on television screens in 1994, ReBoot was centered on the world of Mainframe, where a guardian program sprite and his friends defended the system from superviruses bent on creating havoc and destruction. Mainframe Entertainment will team with leading computer industry manufacturers to update the ReBoot universe and create a ground-breaking viewing experience for fans. Rainmaker Entertainment ReBoots Mainframe “We are excited to focus our television production activities under the Mainframe brand with an all-new version of ReBoot as well as engage with celebrated children’s programming producer Jane Startz on Tiger’s Apprentice.ReBoot is certain to be embraced by a new generation of fans while Tiger’s Apprentice will provide a bold and unique television experience for kids everywhere,” said Michael Hefferon, President and Executive Producer of Mainframe parent Rainmaker Entertainment. Acquired from Starz Media in 2006 by then newly-established Rainmaker Entertainment, Mainframe Entertainment was responsible for an impressive production slate throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, including several seasons of ReBoot, as well as the critically-acclaimed ‘Transformers’ spin-off Beast Wars. Mainframe credits also include Weird-Oh’s, Spider-Man, Action Man, Heavy Gear, Max Steel, Scary Godmother and Barbie. E: just realiized what thread this was. I thought ReBoot was amazing when I was 9, but that's because it was part of that "OH MY GOD THE COMPUTER AGE IS THE poo poo" vibe that was going on in the mid-90's. It was an amazing experience to be a relatively tech-savvy kid during that time, and ReBoot was practically made for kids like me. I've got fond memories. I can't see any real way that you could remake ReBoot for an audience of modern kids and have it be anything other than a weak re-hash that spends its entire brief existence trying to glom onto modern gaming trends. Oh sweet, Bob is in Call of Duty. Oh sweet, Bob's in GTA5. The Beavis and Butthead restart should have taught us that there are a lot of 90's franchises that should stay dead. Content edit: I remember there was a brief period where late-90's Cartoon Network would actually play full cartoon music video bumpers. I don't have any clear recollection of most of them, save for one that's been stuck in my head for many years now: "Rollin" by Soul Coughing. I also have fond memories of watching ToonHeads. Awesome old cartoons viewed through the lens of mid/late-90's edgyness, usually either before or after Space Ghost Coast to Coast. O Canada was also in the same general timeframe. This show used to creep me out as a kid, as a lot of the shorts NFBC was putting out at the time were way more of a mind gently caress than most of the stuff I was watching, but it was a really cool concept. Too bad it had such a crappy time slot. Radio Help has a new favorite as of 09:56 on Oct 4, 2013 |
