uh oh, you better assign a color space profile in your .mp4 files or else iCloud thinks its an SD matrix! The original file: Video ID : 1 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : High@L4.1 Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames Codec ID : avc1 Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding Duration : 1mn 41s Bit rate : 39.5 Mbps Maximum bit rate : 60.4 Mbps Width : 1 920 pixels Height : 1 080 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 23.976 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.795 Stream size : 481 MiB (100%) Title : MOV_0.264#trackID=1:fps=23.976@GPAC0.5.1-DEV-rev4283 Writing library : x264 core 129 r2245 bc13772 Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=4 / deblock=1:-1:-1 / analyse=0x3:0x133 / me=umh / subme=9 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.15 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-3 / threads=12 / lookahead_threads=2 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=240 / keyint_min=23 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=60 / rc=crf / mbtree=1 / crf=21.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=10 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00 Encoded date : UTC 2013-02-17 16:19:47 Tagged date : UTC 2013-02-17 16:19:49 The file on iCloud: Video ID : 2 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : Main@L3.1 Format settings, CABAC : No Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames Codec ID : avc1 Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding Duration : 1mn 41s Source duration : 1mn 41s Bit rate : 2 854 Kbps Width : 1 280 pixels Height : 720 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate mode : Constant Frame rate : 23.976 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.129 Stream size : 34.7 MiB (92%) Source stream size : 36.3 MiB (96%) Title : Core Media Video Encoded date : UTC 2013-09-21 00:45:12 Tagged date : UTC 2013-09-21 00:47:42 Color primaries : BT.601 NTSC Transfer characteristics : BT.709 Matrix coefficients : BT.601 Just so you know, you're supposed to assume rec.709 if there is no color profile metadata set in .mp4. just sayin.

film grain is added in post for tons of modern movies. ANything with a 3d model VFX shot basically has grain added on top, unless it's spy kids 3D because it's not so great for 3D. film grain has a lot of practical applications and cannot be judged by a still. 1) it can unify the scene if you have multiple layers, VFX, or greenscreen. 2) It can increase the appearance of resolution where there is not enough to fill your medium (most optical transfers of film only resolve about 1.2K of resolution when there is at least 2K of resolution to pack in) It explains why that image above looks like it has no detail when it's been denoised. 3) it eliminates banding when you transcode to a 4:2:0 medium like blu-ray/DVD Also you cant judge it's strength from a still, When you see it in motion at full framerate, it's hardly noticible until you pause it But nobody watches movies a still at a time, so it's moot saying "look at how bad film grain is!!!!" from a still.

yes lets add noise in a codec thats fundamentally inept at handling high-frequency data like that xiph was playing around with a codec that would split out the noise and compress that separately, but it was hard to do the noise detection and removal in real time. worked very well off-line though, but couldn't be used for streaming, so they dropped it.

ye film grain should always be a player-side filter

the problem is that with a film transfer, that grain is still in there (unless you removed it for some high end DI/VFX stuff), and so many DoPs are so adamate about keeping their kodak vision something something something grain pattern in there that nothing else will do it would make sense to be able to throw film grain in post as part of a codec standard, but watch VLC gently caress it up or something. also it would be uniform across the entire movie, and sometimes you want to tweak it per shot. also sometimes you want the grain to appear in the highlights and shadows, so you have to do some trickery either pulling back your max highlight, or making your film grain transfer actually darken the image (change opacity) There's a lot of little details that still need to be preserved, but yeah it does make your encode like 3x bigger
|
# ? Sep 21, 2013 21:26 |
|
also there would be a big group of spergy people who would want it off all the time and the DoPs wouldn't like that they gave an option to remove "film grain" in mass effect and apparently they took it out because so many people played with it off, and the directors artistic vision was being ruined.

but anyway when restoring a film you need to restore it to its original state, it ruins the artistic integrity of the film to touch it up and make it "better" than it was which is why crap like airbrushing the grain out of Patton is such a travesty

it has nothing to do with film grain looking "better" or even artistic vision, it's just about authenticity. real art restorers try to preserve the integrity of the original and so should film
