It's great listening to clips of Adam's racing, you can get a great sense of what's going on by the droning buzzing sound.

If Drew had done something that stupid back on Loveline Adam would have yelled at him for 10 minutes for doing bad radio.

Is there some sort of mini-feud between Adam Carolla and Maria Bamford? On Bamford's episode of Comedy Bang Bang she makes a really awkward and unfunny joke about Carolla that insinuates that he was molested as a child. The joke kinda grinds the podcast to a halt until Scott Aukerman changes topics fairly quickly. I can't imagine Adam knows who Bamford is or that they would hang out in the same social circles outside of fellow Comedians of Comedy like Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn being guest on Adam's show.

Go back and relisten to that part of the Comedy Bang Bang episode. You completely missed the point, and there was no awkwardness whatsoever.

Mick Foley is a really cool and down to earth guy who I've me a couple of times but I hadn't heard about his pornstar friend until today. It was a bit strange but it didn't creep me out. I hate how Alison can make a real funny joke and no one acknowledges it. Feels like it happens once a show. Like when they're talking about his daughter spitting in Olga's face and how it's a huge insult in Latin countries, then she casually jumps in saying it's a compliment to her. Went completely ignored but I laughed my rear end off at her delivery.

Even more frustrating is when she asks an actual great interview question and the insightful answer gets derailed so that we can all listen to the Deacon Jones clip again, or perhaps some audio of car engines with Adam's narration.

He's complained about it multiple times in the last few months. He typically starts by ragging on how everyone has a podcast and how he just gets all of these requests for interviews and then he goes on the show and they don't know anything about him or Mangria. There is specific story he tells about the girl that interviewed him about Mangria. I've heard that story 2-3 times.

I don't recall him not watching Breaking Bad, so I can't confirm that.

quote:

Dr. Drew: I am a cancer survivor
By Dr. Drew Pinsky

While many of you were celebrating the Fourth of July, I was at home on my couch recovering from a radical robotic prostatectomy. Four hours of surgery had left me in great pain, without an appetite, and in need of help from my college-age son, Jordan, to get up and lie down. But I was cancer-free for the first time in at least two years.

Prostate cancer is a stealth disease. It rarely announces its presence. It can simmer for a long time without coming to a boil. A low-grade tumor can remain just that, for a very long time.

Detection

And so it went with me. I’d been sick here and there. But overall, I’d felt great. In 2011 my wife, Susan, begged me to go to the doctor for a check-up. I was dismissive. I’m a doctor! I didn’t see the point in going to another internist for a physical. But I went. Blood was drawn. Part of the routine work-up for a male in his 50s includes the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test. The test is controversial. It has limitations that I knew well and my physician acknowledged. There’s no prescribed course of action for a level that rises. A “four” may mean something. It may mean nothing. In my case, the “four” had gone up from a “one.” This was still in the “normal” range. I had microscopic amounts of blood in my urine. But my urologist didn’t see a need – yet -- to sound the alarm. Neither did I. At this point, there was nothing to worry about.

An ultrasound revealed that the central lobe of my prostate was bigger than it should have been. Did that mean anything? If so, what? By that point, I was incredulous. We were making too much of this. Even though my father and uncle had had prostate cancer, there was no evidence that I had cancer.

Prostatitis

The prostate is an “immune” gland, about the size of a kiwi, situated deep in the pelvis, below the bladder. It lubricates the urethra and produces seminal fluid. Men can live without the prostate.

What my doctor diagnosed was prostatitis; inflammation of the prostate. It’s usually caused by a bacterial infection. Sometimes there’s no apparent cause at all. What prompted him to question what was going on inside me were my PSA levels. They remained elevated since that first test. Something told him to look further.

The first biopsy

Let me tell you something about doctors. What you want from them is judgment and intuition. It was these two factors that had my physician ordering a biopsy. I went along, reluctantly. It was awful. They don’t put you under. They take a prostate tissue sample through the anus. What they discovered was a low-grade tumor. What I discovered is that my own intuition and judgment were telling me that I had nothing to fear. But I had prostate cancer, for sure.

Active Surveillance

I was pleased my doctor didn’t want to rush into surgery. I certainly didn’t want to. I wasn’t in denial. My years of training and experience had taught me not to panic about prostate issues. Research shows 30 percent of low-grade prostate tumors get worse during a 10-year span. Thirty percent get better. Thirty percent stay the same.

My doctor and I decided on a course of active surveillance, also known as “watchful waiting.” It’s just like it sounds. So we paid attention. The tumor was monitored over the course of more than a year. I had two more biopsies. I’m glad I did. I’m glad my physician’s intuition told him to order them. They showed that the mass on my prostate had spread. There was too much volume. The tumor had become unpredictable. Something wasn’t right, and my doctor knew it.

Treating low-grade prostate tumors is an inexact science. There’s what the clinical guidelines recommend. Then there’s what the doctor thinks is best. Sometimes, these two forces are at odds. Once again, my physician listened to what his gut told him. Had he followed the textbook, my outcome might have been worse.

Facts

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 200,000 men in this country are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Twenty-five thousand men die from it annually. It’s most common in men over 65. More than half of all men, by age 80, will have cancer in their prostate. I’m in my 50s, so cancer found me early.

Surgery

I didn’t need any convincing to have surgery. My doctor had reached a point where he wasn’t comfortable with active surveillance anymore. His discomfort was good enough for me. My prostate had to come out.

I’m relatively young. I have a wife. I have three children in college. I didn’t want cancer coming back.

So I had a radical robotic prostatectomy in early July 2013. I went home and took my place on the couch the day after. But it’s not a simple or easy operation. A four-armed robot, operated by a surgeon at a control panel, maneuvers inside the body as if the surgeon’s hands were doing it. When I came out of the anesthesia, it felt as if someone had been messing around with my insides. Not good.

Neither was what they found inside; the tumor had a “finger” on it that was millimeters from being contained. It was ready to spread, and would have, had it not been removed.

Follow-up

Why am I telling you this? I want you to hear it from me. Not from the Internet. Not from a gossip column. Not from someone who doesn’t know me.

And I want to make you aware. Men, you are likely to get prostate cancer. The odds are you will if you live long enough. When you do, don’t freak out. You don’t need to take action today. In many cases, time is on your side.

What concerns many males faced with prostate cancer is not the cancer itself, but possible incontinence, and sex. Nerves at the base of the penis, necessary for an erection, can be irreparably damaged by surgery and radiation. Research shows that many men do not get tested for prostate cancer because they fear the effects of surgery they may not even need!

I returned to work 10 days after the surgery. In hindsight, the job(s) could have waited. I am working out again, eating well and feeling very good. I’ll begin running again soon. The only remnant of cancer surgery is six small scars on my torso. They are fading fast. I’m hopeful I am cured.

I’m grateful this was a detectable, survivable cancer. I’m pleased that the judgment and intuition of my physicians were spot-on every step of the way. And I’m glad my wife’s internal radar was working well. Thank you, Susan, for making me go to the doctor.

10 things to know

Prostate cancer is a complex disease.
It behaves differently at different ages.
PSA screening is complicated and controversial.
If your doctor recommends a biopsy or ultrasound, don’t refuse simply because it involves a sensitive part of your body.
If the results show the presence of cancer, don’t panic.
Time is on your side. Don’t rush decisions about radiation or surgery.
Many men can opt for active surveillance, watching the prostate over a period of months or years.
There isn’t a by-the-book, one-size-fits-all treatment.
Trust your doctors’ judgment and instincts. They have seen thousands of cases.
You’re seeing your first case, and it’s you.

I had to skip the section with Siri. It just seemed awkward and she seemed to dominate the podcast once she got on yet had nothing interesting to say.

Also while I'm not hating on Adam Carolla like some here, it seems like he's one week of lovely podcasts away from me unsubscribing. Then he brings on someone like a Jo Koy or a Mick Foley and I hang on just a little while longer...

Niwrad
Jul 1, 2008

I thought Siri was kind of interesting. Not as interesting as Mick and it felt a bit out of place, but not a bad guest. The relationship between the two seems incredibly odd though and Mick comes across a bit creepy. And I did laugh at the Randy West jokes. Either way, it was a good episode. Although I'm not sure why Adam shoehorned Baldywood in there, even Bryan was reluctant to do it.

The DDP episode had potential but Adam let the interview turn too much into an infomercial. It was one of Alison's best though. Bringing up Napolean Dynamite and then setting up the "Dude" off with DDP and Dawson. I wish they'd just drop the newsgirl stuff and let her do her own segment or something on the show. She can still bring up news during the show if things slow down. She's starting to grow on me and I think she's funny but in a bad position.

You're totally right, and you can even hear her getting frustrated when she wants to talk about news and Adam keeps interrupting for a lame joke or to retell an old story and she only gets to bring up one or two news pieces. The news is my favourite segment only because of Alison's sense of humour and the fact that someone other than Adam introducing topics is often the only source of new material the show gets. Bryan is trying to shoehorn himself into the show as a cohost it seems but really that should be Allison's spot. I really wish Adam would step back a bit and let her do more.

Niwrad
Jul 1, 2008

That's partly Adam's fault for not integrating her into the show better. He should defer to her at times for topics, should let her be more vocal in the interviews. They should drop the news and Adam should at the 20 minute mark or so ask her what the topics of the day are. No segment, just natural. It also helps when Adam has someone else guiding the conversation (like on Loveline) so that we don't have to hear about the goalposts another 300 times.

Bryan's emergence as the co-host does make it tough on Alison, as well as any guests. The recent Jo Koy episode is an example of that as Bryan talked more than Jo Koy did. It's not good when the sound guy talks more than your funny guest.

In a weird way, Adam needs a producer. Someone like Stern understands this stuff much better and how to integrate people in. He would never have a guest on and then have Gary talk for half the segment. But Adam doesn't and it feels like they need someone who can control the show and give it guidance. It won't change because he runs the ship. But the show has so much potential if it could drop the bad segments like Adam watching himself race or Bryan giving a terrible movie review while an interesting guest sits in silence.

I almost forgot. The joke Adam makes about Siri walking into a swingers party is hilarious. Bryan poo poo on it but the initial joke setup was hilarious.

I like Brad Williams, I really do. I saw his breakout gig thing at a comedy festival thing put on by the local radio station and he tore it up next to some heavy hitters. Thing is, anytime anyone brings him up Carolla always has to pipe in about how it's great that Brad Williams isn't a schticky comedian that just talks about whatever their "thing" is. He is EXACTLY this type of comedian. I don't get it. Pretty much all his jokes somehow relate to being short, being a little person, little person sex or some related thing. I had this complaint about Brad Williams before he was ever on the Carolla podcast so when Adam mentioned that I was annoyed as poo poo.

Yeah I was wondering if anyone else was able to piece together what happened. It sounded like drunk more than offended, but he was singling her out as he is apt to do when he has a black fan in the crowd, and at one point it sounded like the boyfriend got involved and was yelling stuff too and also got kicked out? All I could make out from the yelling was "It's OK, I can take a joke" or something along those lines shouted in a very drunk fashion. Really I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more, his live podcasts are very loose and people are hammered and he engages with the crowd a lot, which seems like a bad idea when people are getting that sloppy.

Brad's great, but yeah it made me do a double take when Carolla cited him as one of the comedians who doesn't talk about his physicality.

The Greg Proops show was good too. I love Greg, someone earlier mentioned how it's always the 1980s in Carolla's mind, Greg gleefully pointed that out about Carolla's choice of examples for mall stores.
