Its too bad this isnt a bigger deal because eventually its going to happen to someone people know. Weight cutting in mma has gotten to a bad point, and I don't think people understand whats going on. Literally a room full of fighters with IVs in their arm giving them liquid straight into their system after weigh ins

People are always going to look for every advantage they can get and size is one of the easiest ones to go after. And then you have guys like Gleison Tibau that make monstrous cuts every fight but they look to be doing fine.

People are always going to look for every advantage they can get and size is one of the easiest ones to go after. The UFC really is the least likely place to see this happen because of the amount of self-oversight they do. Athletes' weight and their weight cuts tend to be closely monitored from the time they check into their hotel room for an event, well before the water cut begins usually (this is a major part of what Burt Watson oversees). Smaller organizations don't have the resources to do all that, even when they're aware of the issues. Shooto Brazil was a very experienced promotion, I'm sure they'd been aware of weight cutting issues. I other than surprise visits to gyms to see how heavy people are 2-3 weeks out, the best thing commissions could do would be to monitor electrolyte levels of athletes mid-weight cut, and to also restrict how much weight they can cut from 3 days out from the weigh-in. If it means some people like Gleison Tibau can no longer compete at LW, it's not the worst price to pay for safety, and also would mean fewer failed weight cuts in general, not mention fewer thyroid problems for these athletes later in their lives.

Tara Larosa fought Rin Nakai a few hours ago at Pancrase's 20th Anniversary show. It's not available and I've not seen it but most reports are that Larosa decisively beat on Rin for three straight rounds before it went to the judges. Rin Nakai won a Majority Decision by virtue of being Japanese the entire match (this is Pancrase's primary judging criteria).

Well, this is an odd one. Remember that Korean guy that was supposed to fight Nick Diaz a million years ago on the Frank Shamrock/Cung Le card, but ended up getting guillotined in seconds by Drew Fickett? He just retired Mach Sakurai, but wasn't even supposed to be fighting. Mach was holding his own event and was supposed to fight Shamar Bailey. Naturally he wasn't going to make weight, so he negotiated a catchweight and then also blew that, so Bailey refused the fight. Jae Suk Lim was there to corner someone else, borrowed some shorts and won by TKO. A weird ending to an equally weird career. Thanks for killing Trigg and Aoki, enjoy getting fatter than ever.

The Vale Tudo Japan card was going okay, with Will Campuzano eeking out a very close decision with tons of reversals over Hideo Tokoro at Flyweight, then Caol Uno dramatically coming from behind to tap out TAM member Daniel Romero. Uno brought his three young children into the ring afterwords. Then JAG poked Megumi Fujii in the eye in the first round. Twice. The second time drew blood. They stopped the fight for nearly 20 minutes after the second time before restarting it but it was clear Fujii was hosed. The first round was close enough that under Japan's generous scoring criteria it could have been 10-9 Fujii (10-10 with a point deduction). The second round JAG was picking her apart on the feet and Fujii couldn't get it to the ground or land anything because she couldn't see for poo poo. The doctor called it because it was clear Fujii was totally hosed up at that point. JAG wins by TKO at 5:00 of the second round by doctor's stoppage. JAG really does not have a record of doing this poo poo so maybe she trained with the more enclosed gloves you find in most Japanese promotions instead of the VTJ gloves, which appear to be more open than normal Japanese gloves (like UFC gloves actually). Horrible way to end it. Fujii was stoic if sullen throughout but JAG looked nauseous from what happened. Fujii seemed okay with it, and she and JAG hugged for well over a minute and appeared to be talking in pidgin Japinglish to each other (I had no audio but neither speaks the other's language). It was touching in spite of it all. EDIT: Apparently JAG said in her postfight speech (which I couldn't hear) that she didn't feel she deserved a win, which certainly helped the crowd. Thanks for all the amazing and equally disappointing memories Mach. I hope you can create a better wave of jap fighters with your own hands than what you've sat and watched the regional industry fail at doing.
