And that's not even mentioning the inconsistency that it actually removes the search bar from result pages on google.com with the apparent expectation that the address bar is Good Enough For Everybody. It's like they just threw in two completely incompatible ideas for the hell of it.

Because many users type in google.com then type in their search.

There is no general Google thread, but this seems like the place to bitch about the new home tab. Is there any way to get the Recently Closed button back? I loved that little guy.

Not that I know of, but in case you weren't aware, it is now in menu>Recent Tabs.

Hover over the thumbnail, there will be an X in the top right corner.

One of the permissions when installing is that the extension can "access your data on all websites." I realize Google can do the same, but somehow I doubt they care about the money in my bank account, whereas I don't want this random person who wrote the extension to have access.

If you're concerned about that, but still want to use speed dial, or whatever other extension, just do your online banking in an incognito window.

Is there an addon that will automatically fix character encoding issues? When somebody's dumb website sends
code:
’
instead of
code:
'
I'd like it to automatically get substituted.

If there isn't a specific addon for this, is there a general purposed find and replace addon?

This extension is a general find-and-replace addon if you can stand the name, though I'm not sure if it'll work in that specific case because of character encoding weirdness.

Alternatively, just set the encoding manually. The menu is just under Tools. Chances are changing it to UTF-8 from Western or vice versa will fix it.

That's not the problem I'm trying to fix. Something on the backend gets sent wrong, and the server sends literally ’ because that's what's stored in their database.

If I'm using Chrome in Windows 8 mode, and I'm streaming audio or video, it pauses the playback when I switch to another app. Is there a way to stop it from doing that? I have Chrome set to run in the background, but that seems to only work with Desktop mode.

Pretty sure this is a "feature" of windows 8. The netflix app did the same thing, and is the main reason I gave up on metro.

I think I'm a doctor, but that doesn't make me a doctor. This fancy avatar does.
I've run into a weird problem with Youtube and the script "Youtube Center" I loaded with Tampermonkey.

Every time I load a video, it starts to load, then stops and reloads the whole page again. This often leads to getting maybe a second or two of video and audio during the initial load, then it stops and reloads and starts again. Annoying as gently caress.

Anyone else experience this and have a fix, other an "disable Youtube Center?" Which I might do, since this load->reload thing is more annoying than the stuff I got Youtube Center to fix (like being able to pause a video and have the whole drat thing load, which I guess is one of the things that got removed "optimized" with the DASH playback stuff.)

Personally, I've always wanted a Chromebook. This sounds really awesome and I hope they do this.

That's awesome. I've also always wanted to try ChromeOS as I want to give it to my mom as a "mom PC", but I've literally never been able to get any of the weird nightly 3rd party builds to boot, let alone work.

Got a windows 8 problem too.

Running Chrome (stable version) as a full screen app, but whenever I launch a video the sound either comes in a few seconds late, or the video starts without sound then pauses and waits for the sound stream to catch up. Tried turning plugins on and off and a reinstall. Anyone encountered this? Have a fix? Any help appreciated, it's always the small things that really do your head in.

I'm using Smooth Gestures, which is alright, and doesn't seem crap-laden, but it doesn't work on built-in Chrome pages. Also, yeah, I'm coming from Opera and thus spoiled by gestures that work, so I wouldn't mind better recommendations.
